Written by the one and only and sadly, late Rod McKuen. So many of his brilliant songs gained popularity by many artists over the years: Sinatra's "Love's Been Good to Me," Oscar winner for the title song for "The Prime of Miss Jean Bodie, Glenn Yarborough, Mr. Rogers (of course) and perhaps, most famously..."If You Go Away," recorded by hundreds of artists. He also composed "Season in the Sun" which was a pop hit....truly, the list of his brilliance is endless. YES. I was/am/always be huge McKuen fan.He captured the spirit of the soul, and gave the world countless wondrous memorable songs. If you are not aware of him....oh yes...now is the time to start.He was also a poet, and once you read "A Cat Named Sloopy" you will never be the same. Hard to choose a favorite song/poem...but his LISTEN TO THE WAEM changed my life as a fifteen year old. A magical, beloved, weaver of mystical songs. Love him and certainly miss him every day. I ENCOURAGE you to seek him out. You will be glad you did. xoxo Miss Lombard

My brother and I met Rod McKuen about ten years ago. It was great talking with him about music and poetry and a little known legendary singer and recording artist whose name is Tim Morgon. "I remember Tim Morgon!" said McKuen when we mentioned him. We happened to have the soundtrack of a movie Morgon was in; McKuen was thrilled to have it. This was in Burbank about 2005 or 2006. "The World I Used To Know" is an extraordinary song whose lyric drives it as much as the music. Glen Campbell covered it on his "Gentle On My Mind" album. I love Jimmie Roders album "Child of Clay." We also love his recording of "The Long Hot Summer." What a voice. Rodgers has had a difficult life. An admirable person.

You must listen to the words, because this is fundamentally one of the most heart-breaking songs. The rain washing away his shell is the sweet embrace of death, but he doesn't rush, for there is still time yet to love. Even being a man, the weakness he feels from this situation will make you realize that he has a soft base of sand upon which he stands, not the firm ground he so longs for.
@Jimsapeck7 жыл бұрын
Seth Allen thank you very much for this. I was always drawn to this song even though I was probably only in my teens or early 20s when it came out and it wasn't a big hit. Now I'm 71. I was searching for it. I remembered the title as The Man I Used to Be. I listened a couple of times to the words and found them unclear and unsatisfying. But your description is a really good way to look at it and very helpful and meaningful. Thanks.

As stated above, on this day in 1964 {June 13th} Jimmie Rodgers performed "The World I Used To Know" on ABC-TV Saturday-afternoon program, 'American Bandstand'... At the time the song was at #84 on Billboard's Top 100 chart, five weeks later it would peak at #54 {for 2 weeks}, and it spent nine weeks on the Top 100... "The World I Used To Know" reached #9 on Billboard's Adult Contemporary Tracks chart... Between 1957 and 1967 the Camas, Washington native had twenty-five records on the Top 100 chart, five* made the Top 10 with one reaching #1, "Honeycomb", for two weeks on September 22nd, 1957... Besides"Honeycomb", his four other Top 10 records were "Kisses Sweeter Than Wine" {#3 in 1957}, "Oh-Oh, I'm Falling In Love Again" {#7 in 1958}, the above "Secretly", and "Are You Really Mine" {#10 in 1958}... James Frederick Rodgers will celebrate his 87th birthday in three months on September 18th, 2020... * He just missed having a sixth Top 10 record when his "Bimbombey" peaked at #11 {for 1 week} on December 15th, 1958...

I met Rod McKuen many years ago at a concert in Portland Oregon. He was promoting his latest album and book Listen To The Warm he signed my copy of the book, and I will always treasure it snd the time I was able to speak with him he was such a warm and giving man I also met another. person there who was working with Rod, that was Larry Brown, artist and producer, and we remain friends today. Rod had a way with words that connected with everything in my heart. His talent, his voice and his words are greatly loved and missed.

I believe the song is about a man, who falls in love with a woman And together, they are in a state of bliss, and Harmony. But the man knows, that this can't last forever. And eventually, he'll have to go back to the way he was before. He will have to be the man he has always been. And I'm assuming that man has been someone who is alone. Or at least not tied down in a relationship.

Ah yes. The good oldays, when artists with a hit lipsynced it on Bandstand. Nevertheless, despite which, even so, regardless, be that as it may - always thought TWIUTK was one of his best songs. An didja notice the clarity of his voice - ervy word can be heard and undestood! A thing unknown to occur in today's pop top songs.

This is the first time that Ive heard Jimmie Rogers song,and Ive folowed since 1955 and Honeycomb,anyways this was not a good song for him. This is a Rod Mchoen song. Its mean. It is not a song for Jimmies voice. Listen to his Red River Valley then come back here. Sorry, great song, just not a good fit.
@MrsRosencranz111 ай бұрын
Huh, I actually like him on this because he does attempt to interpret the meaning. So many others just sing it with no regard. I'm still not sure why he always anticipates leaving. (is he on the run?) I like Glen's and I like Dickie's especially because of the Spanish guitars they use. Glen's licks of course.
@Helm-w1q11 ай бұрын
@@MrsRosencranz1 I have enjoyed Jimmie Rogers since the fifties and I was a kid. Followed his career pretty close, and was really heartbroken when he was beaten so bad. I cheered as he made a come back. You asked what type a man he was singing about and that to me is why it don't fit. This man he is singing about ,Rod Mcheon, who was a great poet, but a lousy human being. You could fall in love with him at your own risk. And as much as you may love him,he will never love you. I guess that I see the singer, and it doesn't fit what I know of him. Now a song of his that I truly love, Red River Valley, If you haven't heard it listen. You will thank me.
