Though I worked locally on both the 1968 and 1972 campaigns, James Earl Carter was the first presidential candidate that I was able to vote for and he is also the only presidential candidate whose re-election I vote for. God bless the man I consider the most intelligent president of my lifetime.

I remember President Carter’s inauguration, seeing him and his wife and Amy walking in his own inaugural parade. I am about the same age as Amy, and at the time wondered what it must be like for your dad to be president and live in the White House. For me, seeing the elderly President and Mrs. Carter helping build homes for those in need told me all I needed to know about them. They were salt of the earth good and righteous souls.

When people ask who was the greatest president this country ever had, I always say Jimmy Carter. He walked the walk. He led with integrity, had a raw deal with the Iran hostage crisis and possible collusion by Reagan with Iran to influence the election (hostages were released minutes after Reagan took office, c'mon). Then after his presidency, he went on to quietly do good works. I had the honor of meeting President Carter when he stopped by my booth at the renaissance faire I was working at in Wisconsin while he was there with Habitat for Humanity. I'm so happy he's still kicking, and able to see Kamala Harris running for president. I hope he's able to vote for her. This country owes this good man a great debt for his unassuming humanity and good works.
