As Americans are preparing for some programs in paying tribute to the late, great President Jimmy Carter, the National Geographic Channel was able to upload this special episode of Dr Neil Degrasse Tyson's "StarTalk" from almost a decade ago. Thank you, Nat Geo, for having this ep uploaded on your KZbin channel! May you rest in peace, President Carter.

Ditto. I'm more than happy to have voted for President Carter, and this piece showcases one of the areas in which he was effective at making lives better around the world. Thanks to Dr. Tyson and Nat Geo for bringing this back at the perfect time to appreciate an amazing humanitarian,

Jimmy is hands down the greatest post-president ever. He pretty much invented that category and remains the sole member. Popularity means nothing.

This interview is a trip. An entirely different "enemy within". We were so naive talking about vaccine and science deniers like they're akin to flat earthers and not an entire political party. Programs to benefit the people and not line the pockets of the rich and destroy environmental protection agencies. Yikes!
@jorymil4 күн бұрын
There's a lot wrong with the US--way too much economic inequality, for starters. There's a lot of great stuff, too--national parks, NASA, science funding, arts funding. But criminal presidents don't do very well at helping it be great.

@jorymil4 күн бұрын
Super-cool, right? I just knew about the peanut farming--the popular story--and Habitat for Humanity. Didn't know that he studied physics/engineering in school. Makes for a good trivia question--which is the last president who could solve the Schrodinger equation?
@G-Man-half-life4 күн бұрын
Jimmy Carter worked on a nuclear ☢️ submarine in the navy so of course he had to study nuclear physics.

I find that so-called comedic interruptions annoying and they derail what the expert is explaining. What President Carter accomplished in his lifetime is mind boggling and so very impressive. The key there is they send things directly into the village that needs the help and education, they don't deliver it to the government. A community caring about the entire of community - something we are lacking in our country right now. What happened to Waging Peace - the republican party and MAGA totally missed that memo?

So y’all are gonna drop Dr. Tyson because of allegations (which he was cleared for), not bring him back, and then post an interview with Jimmy Carter after his death because it’s a relevant? Pretty disrespectful if you ask me.

I see how Dr Tyson has to keep reminding everyone the Chuck nice is a comedian and he is a astrophysics.....to make it clear that everyone knows chuck is not as smart as he is......the truth is chuck nice is just as intelligent of not more intelligent.....he is just is in a different field

Dude, Chuck need to STFU and get off this podcast. He is not funny. I would watch this more often if he was not there.
@jorymil4 күн бұрын
I like his jokes, as well as his layman's approach. Is he better or worse now than he was here (2015)?
@beffjarker2084 күн бұрын
@jorymil I think he tries to make jokes that are just not funny and it interrupts the flow of speech between an actual good conversation and is very distracting. I have no idea whether he is better or worse than any other time. Neil is much more funny than he is in common banter in these podcasts.

He left the government humiliated by Ayatollah Khomeini, who freed the hostages from the American embassy less than a minute after Ronald Reagan's inauguration, in January 1981. But Carter had negotiated their release. He was overshadowed by Reagan, the charming communicator. In 1979, during the spike in inflation, he appointed Paul Volcker to the Federal Reserve (US central bank). Volcker raised interest rates to 15% per year, caused a recession and contributed to the president's defeat. Volcker managed to tame inflation, and Reagan reaped the results in the second year of government, winning re-election in 1984 by a landslide. Carter was a failure in politics and a success in vision.🫵
@jorymil4 күн бұрын
I suspect Carter surrounded himself with some questionable foreign policy advisers--Brzezinski, in particular. The embassy probably should have been evacuated months beforehand. Ultimately, though, the United States sowed the seeds of the crisis back in the 50s by overthrowing the existing government to install the Shah. Carter merely inherited a long-standing problem in the Shah. I often wonder as well about the time scales of change: being locked to a 4-year election cycle doesn't allow enough time for change to take effect. It's not by accident that presidents get more done in the first two years of their presidencies than in the last two years. I'd argue that Carter _was_ a success in politics if you define it as what he accomplished in office. If you define success by reelection, then sure... perhaps he failed.
