As it has been often said about Jimmy Carter: A good man, but a bad President. He tried but the country needed a different kind of person in the late 70s-early 80s to deal with the kind of problems people were facing. There is a reason Reagan beat him in landslide in 1980 in the worst defeat of an incumbent President since FDR beat Hoover. I think if Carter had been in elected in 1992, when the country was in a more stable position, he probably would have done better.
@RobertaPowell-kt5zuКүн бұрын
@@FlintIronstag23 He was actually better as president. Inflation and the hostages cost him the presidency. Now we expect both.
@FlintIronstag23Күн бұрын
@@RobertaPowell-kt5zu Yes, he definitely had to contend with many issues as President. He just didn't do enough to alleviate the problems or at least give the impression that he was going to alleviate them. In 1980, Carter carried only 6 states in the electoral college and got just 41% of the popular vote. Those are horrendous numbers for an incumbent President. You can't explain Reagan's overwhelming victory in 1980 if the public thought Carter did a good, or even decent, job as President.

I vividly recall Jimmy and Roselynn walking up the avenue, waving to the crowds. The only time I ever cut class, and it was worth it to see history unfold.
