I've been fascinated by Coonan for awhile. Its so strange how he seemed like a normal kid until his dad got bullied, and then he turned into a gangster over night and went balls to the wall. And he never looked back. If there were one gangster/mobster who I'd ask a question to, it'd be him. I'd ask him what his ambitions were as a kid before that situation in his life changed everything. Another great piece of work, Mooney! Appreciate your time.

It's his story that he became a gangster because he had to. I doubt it. It's the same origin story every thug likes to have. It was old when Jesse James and his model William Clarke Quantrill used it, and as much of a lie then as now. Coonan was a thug because, like his buddy Roy DeMeo, he liked it. He wasn't even a very smart thug, which is why he and his crew of losers didn't last very long and left no successors, except for the white collar criminals who came to inhabit Clinton aka Hell's Kitchen.
@legscoll32962 жыл бұрын
He was a gangster in the making even as a boy
@Kee2Oz2 жыл бұрын
@@brianmccarthy5557 Could be true. I've read only the one side of the story about his early life. Although, nearly all of his contemporaries were involved in street gang activity when they were kids,there isn't anything that I've found to suggest that he was a young hoodlum. I don't think he started out like DeMeo at all, but he turned into him. I mean he went after an adult criminal organization by specifically going after Spillanes and his guys, he wasn't extorting, thieving, or loan sharking. I sure don't admire Jimmy Coonan, but for a criminal, he was a unique case I think.

Great job as usual Mooney.. As a 50 yr old Irish American born/raised in Queens, NY, and kinda witnessed the very tail end of the crazy that was the Irish in Hells Kitchen up thru the mid 90's, they were scary, scary people. They even scared us Irish from other parts of NYC. Maybe not as slick or as polished as the Italian mafia, but equally if not more ruthless in their ways. The area was also a great hiding spot for IRA snipers on the run from the Brits back in the 70s/80s. I had a few cousins housed there. But, sadly, like the rest of old school NYC...Hells Kitchen is no more. It's literally a huge, transient gay community there now.

Mickey Featherstone sent a wannabee from the pub to his house to get a milk carton from the refrigerator and bring it back to him. There was something in there that he wanted to show his friends. The Wannebee looked into the milk carton on his way back and saw that it contained a severed penis. They were really crazy characters. (greetings from the Netherlands Mooney, amazing channel)

Probably a lot of your viewers know this but I'm sure some don't. Hell's Kitchen was traditionally a mostly Irish neighborhood on the West Side of Manhattan. It was famous for its vicious gangsters. Jimmy Cagney movies were set there. If parts of New York were Hell then this area was even hotter than the normal parts of Hell; hence Hell's Kitchen. The term has crept into the vernacular. By the 1960's and 1970's, the era of the last New York Irish Mob usually known as the Westies, the area was being gentrified. The real estate developers, not wanting to scare away customers, spread their bucks among corrupt New York Democrats and voila - Hell's Kitchen was replaced by the current name Clinton. Many people don't even know where Hell's Kitchen was or think it's a myth. The maps of New York show only Clinton. Much the same thing happened on the North Side of Chicago, where the University is now and rich people dwell, that used to be the awful slum of Kilgallen. My grandparents lived there with their siblings and my father was there as a baby. It its day it was normally regarded as the worst and most violent slum in America. It made today's "slums" look like kindergartens in a well behaved suburb. Much of the most notorious violence of the Roaring 20's and Prohibition occurred there, including the St. Valentine's Day Massacre and many more. Now the name is changed, the Irish are forgotten, and nobody knows of it. The same is almost true of Hell's Kitchen and soon will be. Very convenient for those who accuse us Irish Americans of White Privilege. I believe the fingers and body parts preserved in the bar, along with at least one head. I've been told that the same occurred in Chicago and in the old violent Irish areas of Boston and New York. Apparently it's one of our endearing customs. Roy DeMeo partnered with the Westies. It was how they came to an arrangement with the Gambinos. He might have known how to butcher bodies before the partnership but the Westies loaned him experts to train his crew on the finer points. The Irish were so scary that they frightened the Jamaicans and the Russians, both very tough boys. DeMeo brought them in when he had to do really heavy work. As Jimmy Burke and the Boston Mob proved, even in their last criminal stages the Irish gangs were fearsome groups. Thank God it seems those days are mostly past us, but that's why Irish cops had to be so tough.

“More Twisted!” Very well put. Jimmy Coonan was not necessarily a nice guy. BTW, that bar reminds me of the Bo Weinberg bar scene in “Billy Bathgate.” And the Frank Pantangelo bar scene in Godfather 2. Any connection? If not, they must’ve hired the same architect. No escaping Roy DeMeo! Just “covered the waterfront” of the 1970s, that guy! I suppose Coonan is the basis for “Jack” in “State of Grace,” too. 💀

The Wes ties were the farm team persay to the demeo crew. Castallano, gaggi, and Roy, all has a meeting at Tomassos, putting Roy in charge of westies. This was a attempt of Roy’s Gemini method. Great video. But Roy was in charge of keeping the westies in line the best he could. Great video

Don't know how anybody in that life ever got a wink of sleep, i really don't.The images in their heads of what they did everyday&the fear of reprisal's would turn me into a complete insomniac,worrying,stressing out,scanning faces,car's 24/7.Slightest noise at night outside my home.wow think i'd be praying for the feds to come get me lol

Yes loved this. Wow they were a sick bunch. So they were a fringe gang of the mafia? Learning so much from your videos. Thank you so much!

They were a bunch of neighborhood guys that grew to one of the most feared crews separate from the Italian mafia

Neighborhood guys mostly of Irish descent. Some weren’t Irish. Many of them had union jobs in the Jacob Javits center. I saw a Westie doing security at Chelsea TV studio when I went to a talk show taping. He had a shamrock tattoo on the web between his thumb and pointer finger. One of the dudes I was with started beefing with a camera man. As we were leaving the camera man had told security what happened. My stupid friend wanted to fight them. I was trying to explain that these dudes were some cold ass white boys. My buddy is Puerto Rican so he had no idea who the Westies were. He took my advice and walked away thank god.

Great video and story MDC! Gory as hell but you kept it funny and real, no sugarcoating. That NASCAR Jacket you got cost about $150 new back in the day so hold onto it tight. Someone was either a Ryan Newman or Jeremy Mayfield fan cause they ran Dodges and Alltel sponsored them. Unlike yourself, I’m a race fan, not a jacket fan LOL 😝

I appreciate that and thanks for the backstory on the jacket lol

If you go you go on KZbin and search State of Grace Car Scene there is a great scene of Garry Oldman and Sean Penn driving around that area with the Rolling Stones playing in the background

I should have watched some of your videos from the Manhattan before I visited this summer. I walked right by several historical mob sites like the original Umberto's clam house on mulberry without even knowing while visiting the old Ravenite
