Harold Valan, the referee is the only judge? I remember being outraged when I was a kid watching this fight at the decision. I guess him not calling Ellis going to the canvas in the 14th , a knockdown was a giveaway that he was going to screw Floyd out of the decision.

The refs and judges really loved Ellis. Very favorable results vs both Quarry and Patterson

Patterson won. An injustice no doubt. But Frazier would have taken either one out at this point..

Absolutely! Agreed. Jerry Quarry should have beaten him in the elimination tournament if he hadn't injured his back AND fought like he did against Thad Spencer. Quarry should have won that tournament!

Quarry also got a gift decision against Patterson. Both the draw and the points decision were robberies.

I watched it again today on the 56th anniversary of that 1968 fight. Once again ... PATTERSON WAS ROBBED!!!

They were no judges outside of the ring, only the referee scored the fight.

@@Dragoncannon4 First of all, why would the WBA EVER sanction a fight where the ref is the only judge? What is this 1920? Also... Sweden? REALLY?? Also, Ellis was knocked down. This ref was probably paid off because Patterson won this fight and deserved the decision! Furthermore, if he wasn't paid off , then he was incompetent and should not have refereed this bout. Finally. Frazier vs. Patterson?..... YIKES! I shudder to think of it... (Liston vs. Patterson, anyone???)
