Jimmy Kimmel Returns with Baby Billy After Heart Surgery

Jimmy’s baby Billy had his second open heart surgery last week so Jimmy had guest hosts fill in for him while he was out. Thankfully the surgery was a success and Jimmy returned to the show tonight with Billy in tow to show everyone how well he is doing. Jimmy thanks the bright and talented doctors and nurses at Children’s Hospital LA. He has to have one more surgery when he is around six years old and then he is good to go. However, the fight is not over for millions of children whose health is threatened right now because a program called CHIP (Children’s Health Insurance Program), that is there to protect them, is in serious need of funding because Congress recently failed to approve funding for it. This is not a partisan issue. Democrats and Republicans have always overwhelmingly supported it - until now. Now it’s being used as a bargaining chip. So Jimmy is encouraging everyone to call the House and Senate at [phone] to tell them to take a break from tax cuts and fully fund CHIP now. Whoever says that Jimmy should "stay in his lane" and not talk about politics...This is his lane! This is about his son's life and the lives of all children. Jimmy is wealthy, he can afford healthcare for his baby, but so many people cannot. How can you criticize him for this? CHIP is a great program. He's right, it's not a partisan issue. My son has a heart condition as well! My husband got laid off right before i got pregnant with him! and as soon as I found out i was pregnant with him I was able to get insurance through the state! Ever single one of his treatments were covered until he was 2 by the state! My husband and I both got good paying jobs a few weeks after born and the state, even after we told them we were good we didn’t need covered anymore, they still covered us for another year! I think there is just a lot of misconceptions on medical care and what will be covered and what won’t. but public Hospitals cannot turn away patients! Granted I know some hospitals are better than others. But Where my ollie got his care was a public university hospital and they saved his life. There are a lot of non profit organizations too that will help others pay for medical care as well! And maybe theyre not as known and maybe someone should do more of an effort to make them known. My point is that federal ran programs are not always the answer! There is a lot more nuance in issues with this! And I think it’s totaLly worth the debate. I get completely how he is feeling thought.

If he's going to advocate for programs like CHIP and demand his audience rally on congress to protest a tax policy, he ought to educate himself about those things. Hearing Kimmel wail about how Republicans want babies to die because they cut taxes is divisive, asinine, and slanderous. As a Canadian living in a province that has free healthcare, I’d rather choose private clinics and pay on my own instead of using the public healthcare system. My first son was born with tetralogy of fallot with VSD. unfortunately he did not survive as there were complications from the surgery. As upset as I was, I found peace in time by hoping that the knowledge they gained from doing the surgery, and also advancing the knowledge, research, and repair, would create stories like this one in which more children can not only be repaired, but go on to live long healthy lives. I'm glad to hear that things have gone well. Zachary was born in 1994, so I can only imagine that the technology has advanced in helping repair these babies broken little hearts...

Well, not everyone CAN be cured of course. Sadly sometimes there is nothing even the best doctors can do. But I agree that it should NEVER be just about money. Even poor people love their children, and I can’t even begin to imagine the heartbreak of knowing that the ‘powers-that-be’ have decreed that your child must die (possibly in great pain) when they might otherwise be saved, simply because you don’t have a high powered job. It makes you wonder how the unfeeling people who make those decisions can sleep at night. I guess they must tell themselves ‘I’m alright Jack’, but maybe they should be aware of Karma, and remember that even the wealthy can lose their high-paying jobs, especially in the current economic COVID-fed climate.

@@davemail Well, it’s not totally like insurance. Insurance = you pay for yourself to get things covered. Free healthcare means you pay a crazy amount of taxes and if you don’t use the healthcare system, you’re paying for someone else to use it. So you’re paying out of your pocket for someone else to get free medicare. Would you give 10k to a random person to cover their medical fees? I live in Canada and we have free healthcare. But everything is super slow and messy. We often joke that if we do have a serious disease, we would die first because the wait time is too long lol

I'm not sure, but it's quite possible that CHIP saved my life. I had severe asthma and allergy problems when I was born. I needed multiple hospitalizations when I was a toddler. I was EXTREMELY fortunate. My parents live in SE PA. Even though their insurance was expensive, they had access two some of the best doctors in the nation. CHOP is amazing. It sounds like LA's Children's Hospital is just as wonderful. I am SO HAPPY that your son is healing well! It's beautiful!
