If Indians concentrate on Olympiads more than JEE rote stuff (which requires you to take coaching since 8th in a fancy coaching centre if you wanna get top ranks), then *probably we'll get great Nobel winning Scientists and Fields medal winning INDIANS* . I've participated in spelling bee at state level before. It's actually harder than just memorizing. The reason why contestants usually ask the origin of the word is so that they can find the root of these words and figure how the origin of these countries might spell them. If the root word is Latin, the spelling is different than Slavic or Greek.Hence it seems like they're stalling whenever they are asked to spell in competition but they're actually mapping out in their head. Those who purely memorised are the one who get eliminated early on because nobody can survive by just memorising.
