Democracy wouldn't work in China simply because of the population of the country. And on Mr. Lai's point on how he's the most "absolute" dictator because he has AI, well, you can bet that past dictators would've used AI had it been available to them. Also, if you asked the majority of Chinese citizens living in the mainland, they don't mind giving up some of their personal freedom in return for security. Don't for a second think that governments in the west don't spy on their citizens Mr. Lai. Just because China has openly advertised the usage of AI to monitor their cities doesn't mean that other countries don't use it as well. You also say that President Xi doesn't tolerate a free HK, but you just mentioned that one of HK's greatest strengths its rule of law, so if you incorporate HK into China's method of doing things, then there would be no rule of law as it currently stands. Furthermore, President Xi has said that HK's system CAN work, providing it doesn't destabilize the "one country".

Based on what happened in East Europe, after the fall of communism, where life even now after 30 years is not much better (democracy and free speech is good, but not enough for a great life), can you guess what will happen in China and how long it will take for the Chinese people to have a better life in 'freedom'? @604pc5 жыл бұрын
@@henrydoone7554 "Try to 'remove' a chunk of USA and see the reaction from the Americans!" I have to admit I don't quite understand what you mean. If you try to relate "remove a chunk of USA" to China broken up into 5 parts, I would say that would be quite irrelevant. From what I know every state in the US all agree to unite after declare independent from the Brits and they share mutual benefit and same ideology, whereas another 4 parts of China were incorporated into the colonies of the middle kingdom by force. Yes there will be a lot of death if the 5 parts split off. Think about what would have been if the west hadn't let go all their colonies. Like you said "nationalism is something that is present all over the world", but at least in free society people can still learn to be develop their critical thinking and see their own history in many perspective, not only the state control narrative version, and that lead to the questioning of the authority and nationalism itself. As we can see from the history that decolonization in many place could be possible due to the courage of the local people who fought for independent, and also the anti colonialism movements within those colonial power themselves. In the case of China, the if the civil war and a huge number of casualties is going to happen, that 's because the mainlanders still hold on to their own version of nationalism that having their country as a middle kingdom where the rest of the world just rotating around them. Call me a racist as you want (and I'm partly Chinese myself) but I would rather see their broken up in 5 pieces and all casualties, their fighting to death for their chinese legacy and civilization that they're so proud of as a result of their own mistake instead of letting them on their way to be a super power and become a threat to the world, brag about their economic success through their authoritarian process for the rest of the world to emulate from them. Some said people are against China because of anti-communism brainwashed, and not to accept the fact that other people in the world think differently, well but the universal value is the respect the right and the freedom of the other, that's the thing Chinese will never know if they just don't accept that all their values and their centralized culture that have shaped their mentality for thousand years are just nothing but the worst form of brainwashing. Under this mentality they have, they are incapable of respect the right of the other, incapable of thinking beyond nationalism. It present itself in many forms and scale, as a government, you can see the damages caused by the state-sponsored investments from mainland all over the world, or the support for the governments like North Korea or Myanmar that have the worst record on human right violation, and as an individual, you can also see in the mainland tourist behaviors. If you say these irresponsible behaviors as a different way of thinking, then I am glad that this way of thinking is not become universal.

The British should have given Hong Kong independence with full membership in the British Commonwealth of Nations and a security agreement to defend its independence. The lease agreement was not made with the Chinese communists. The British were under no legal obligation to give Hong Kong to communist China. Giving Hong Kong to Taiwan would have been a better option than what was done.
@Wanamaker19465 жыл бұрын
Kevin C That wouldn’t have worked either. Hong Kong was leased to British for 99 years. When the lease ended, Britain lowered its flag as the Red China raised it that day in 1997. Its all on KZbin to see for yourself. Hong Kong was always the Property of China.

Yvan Guez India wasn’t leased. Britain didn’t return India. Britain’s trading reasons for being there were no longer relevant after WWII. Britain didn’t leave because of Gandhi, they were already winding down Empire after WWII. The British Empire was the EU of the 19th century. Their colonies where originally Trading Posts all over the globe. It was magnificent. As trading took off, communities were created. British citizens who never knew anything but dark dreary England...now could easily be sent via steam ship to any part of the Empire to become a Civil Servant. The partition of India and Pakistan would never have been perfect. Moslems aren’t about peace and love. They only love one thing...War! and nothings changed on this issue. Britain brought Democracy to its Colonies and the spoken Word Of The Queen’s English. (QueenVictoria) This is why English is the World language......if you expect to get ahead.

@@Wanamaker1946 there is pattern in the politic of Labour Party in government during all the XXth. In India, Africa or Middle East the Labor renounced to the establishment of Democratic governments. Leaving everywhere socialist or islamist or militarist dictatorships. And in arming and "leading from behind" the Arab armies the British socialist government tried to crush Israel the first Democratic State in the Middle East and unfortunately the last. Don't forget that the Jordan army was commanded by British officers and the Jordan , Egyptian, Iran kings was puppets of London. Trading them in for money. Just look at he tourists that go around the world. There is no modesty and are embarrassing. Worse than when American tourists took their travels around the world. I am thoroughly embarrassed. But I do give the mainlanders credit for the “progress” that they have worked hard for in the last few decades. Uplifting hundreds millions from abject poverty, on the backs of the US middle class-But that’s another subject which warrants days of discussion. The corporatists in the states are to blame. In communist China, today, when good people act properly, they are re educated. These formerly good actors are coerced to support the Party's goals. What to do? The state does not represent the people any more and there are no free elections. Therefore organized rebellion by groups inside China is needed to break the nightmare dictatorship imposed by the Party on its population. I hope rebellion begins in Hong Kong in the form of larger protests, continuous presence of international observers, and establishment of Hong Kong funded self-defense institutions. Since HK police is not supporting the Hong Kong people, HK people need to establish a new institution: a new police institution that is responsible to and funded by the people of Hong Kong.

"Far too many people support the trade-off of civil liberties for economic growth." Truer words were never spoken. That's the harsh reality that we in the third-world and developing countries have to deal with. Talk to any of my countrymen about freedom of speech & religion or the right to keep & bear arms for the preservation of life and liberty and you'll be met with strange stares. The fact is, we have long placed crippling limitations or outright did away with our God-given liberties for the sake of social and economic progress, both of which we either never received or were given bastardized forms of. A Singaporean cab driver once told me one morning when I was on my way to take my SAT a few years ago, "Freedom doesn't put food on the table." His words pretty much summarized the common sentiment of the people in my part of the world. After all these years I finally have a rebuttal to that man's statement: Freedom lets you decide what food to put on the table.

There is a distinction between the Chinese regime and the Mainland Chinese. Please make it clear. Jimmy! I am a mainland Chinese and I advocate for Hong Kong's freedom. Your speech hit all the points I want to make in the West, but I don't want to become the target of hatred in the West. It is very important. Instead of saying Chinese, say Chinese regime or Chinese government or directly Chinese Communist Party.

Dong Su, I don't think you have to worry. I paid close attention and how Jimmy spoke was not confusing to me. I don't think other Americans watching this will misunderstand the distinction between Xi and the communist party, and the Hong Kong and other Chinese people who want freedom. And this was true even during the former Soviet Union (USSR). Americans believed that the Russian people, for the most part, did not like being under the oppressive rule of the Soviet Union, even while we waged a "cold war" with them. We hoped that the citizens' hearts were not in agreement with the government in power.

From a diplomatic point of view it's so sad that Jimmy Lai, a Chinese person, feels the need to appeal to foreign entities to pressure China toward democratic ideals. The Chinese political machine makes it largely impossible to reform, especially under their current long term strategic vision. But Hong Kong had a brilliant position where friendly diplomatic relations could have offered Beijing a Western perspective on CCP politics. Instead Hong Kong citizens grow up in total fear of their own nation. Feeling the only way to be heard is to carry British and American flags while marching the streets, rather than engage in civil dialog with main landers. This extradition bill for instance, politically it had obvious cause as it would close a loophole that made Hong Kong a safe haven for criminals such as the young murderer who fled from Taiwan to Hong Kong. The only reason why people like Jimmy Lai opposed it so vehemently, to the point that they completely disregard the existence of any loop hole, is because fear has completely overtaken them. It's sad.
