And why would you chastise Cory, for making fun of what we are all here to listen to and then try totally unsuccessfully to spank me, for spanking Cory on the very same chastising you pulled on him ? Rule number one on youtube pages, come for the subject matter, and if you are unimpressed with the material, post a link for something you think everyone else might enjoy. @Tedmund13
@Tedmund13 7 жыл бұрын
I think 'light and shade' is like a personal mantra to Jimmy if I understand it right. It's not just about the musical dynamics in LZ's music, it manifests itself in so many different ways. The interest in any music lies in the contrast, and light vs shade is a great perspective on that
@coobird1ify
@coobird1ify 7 жыл бұрын
Tedmund13 ,,,,,,, absolutely right ,,",,Light and Shade " is a term used in painting or sculpture(other art forms as well) . Jimmy was brilliant in using that term to describe compostions in music. It's referring to contrast. Loud against quiet, fast against slow ,,hard again soft. ( light and shadow ) . Think of those as musical notes. One accentuates the other to create variety, ,, hence creating interrest and impact. You can recognise it easily in " Ramble On". Jimmy is a master at creating this effect in his compositions. IMHO

I'd agree with that. Certainly it's my personal favourite out of their catalogue. Extremely tasteful and melodic, with the soft loud dynamic being exectuded by the whole band with perfection. Also, the lead break is so restrained. Like the lead break by George Harrison on Something, it's a lead break you can sing with your voice. And when you do that's when you realise how musical it is. Ten Years Gone is the song I play to people who think Led Zeppelin is "just a heavy metal band".

is playing is the most lyrical of anyone in Rock. My absolute favorite guitarist ever. People talk about his technique being weak or sloppy, but NO ONE plays a line with the touch and feeling that he does. NO ONE can impart the aggressive, powerful feeling of Heartbreaker like him. NO ONE can play a song like rain song at 100 decibels live with the delicacy of Jimmie. And no one writes the melodic lines that will be playing 100 years from now like Jimmy. Almost everysong he did was a masterpiece on so many levels.
@jayall00
@jayall00 7 ай бұрын
Agreed, what people think is him playing sloppy is usually intentional and actually very technical. I think there should be a new word to describe it. His playing style is in the same light as the Bonham or Purdy shuffle. It's not perfectly in sync, and that's WHY it sounds so good. It sounds human and organic, and (just imo) that's something today's music lacks. So many people just don't get it, but that to me is at the very essence of the blues and led zeppelin's playing. It's almost like an intended drunkenness. It's like Robert Plant when he sings Dancing Days. His vocals are sung at a lower pitch than they should be, and it has the adverse effect. It brings the song to life, and he knows it
@erichharrington1213
@erichharrington1213 7 ай бұрын
@@jayall00 Well said. I think Page also was willing to push to the edge of his technique, not in pat scales but in free improvisation. It gave it a tension you don't get by playing safe. And Bonham had this amazing technique of laying back in the pocket as good as ANYONE, and then as the tension built in transitions, he would move forward to in time or slightly ahead to create a sense of urgency or climax, and then he would release back into that amazing behind the beat pocket. He was the best drummer ever, and for things the vast majority of people, even musicians don't understand, but they FEEL it. And Page was the same. The paying in the middle of the movie "Song remains the same" starting with "No Quarter" was unmatched in my experience for a live performance. Even my classical pianist friend when he watched it with me said it was virtuosity of a level he had never seen in rock players..

A lot of guitarists don't understand. They play lead only... The melody is the least important part of the song. It needs a foundation, and that's exactly what this video is, Jimmy building Ten Years Gone, foundation up.

The difference is shredders get no emotion in thier play. Guys like page and Clapton etc get so much emotion from their play its dripping out. Anybody can learn to play a guitar really fast and shit. It takes another level of connection from brain to guitar to bring what page does.

Forever my favorite guitar player. Such an artist. Jimmy has become my biggest guitar inspiration, and I don’t know what I’d do without his music. I remember when I first started learning guitar in high school, one of the first songs I made myself learn was Over The Hills And Far Away. There was a girl that used to hang around me and my buddies who were also learning how to play, and I used to play Led Zep songs over and over again trying to impress her and get her to notice me (over the hills, ten years gone, Tangerine, etc.) Now we’ve been together for 4 years and are spending our first Christmas in our own home tomorrow morning. Like I said before, I don’t know what I’d do without Jimmy’s music 🎵❤️

That's the downside of creating so many memorable guitar hooks in the studio. It's impossible to play them all when it's only one guitar player on stage. When Page/Plant toured they had another guitarist onstage, which was especially awesome for The Song Remains the Same. Also, it was cool when Jimmy teamed up with the Black Crowes because they played this song with two additional guitarists.

Hearing him build his tracks kind of tells you what he was thinking. Landing on a note that will make a cool chord when you put it all together. It probably started as an experiment and he heard something that might work from all that. He always spoke about having a vision. That must be part of it, hearing something you started and expanding on it like crazy. How he came up with all those crazy ideas we may never know. He wrote things we never knew we wanted to hear until we heard it. Genius

First off, writing the entire bridge for 10 Years Gone!! I can honestly say that this song has been in love with me from the first time I heard it, in High School, 1977 or '78. I saw Led Zeppelin in Cincinnati, Ohio at the Riverfront Coliseum, April 21st, 1977. (I think that's accurate). first come, first served seating. My girlfriend and I had a straight-on view of the stage at the very back of Riverfront Coliseum. We had a wide-angle view, and the huge lighting trusses and the sound was perfectly Stereo. At exactly 8:00 pm that evening, the lights went out! No announcements. Jimmy Page started the chords for "The Song Remains The Same" and comes dancing out on stage right. Robert Plant came dancing out of stage left, and they met in the middle of the stage, THAT was when the song exploded! Everyone went banana's!!! They played for 2 and a half hours! Both nights. (The next night, the 20th, as well). The laser effects that they used back then were still new, pretty spectacular but a pain in the ass to mainstain!. Their stage and lighting trusses were enormous for 1977!!! 2 years later in December of 1979, I faced death right in front of my face at the same venue, only this time to see The Who, at Riverfront Coliseum, Downtown Cincinnati.

Page once said he loved Joni Mitchell, because her music made him cry. Listening to this demo, especially at the beginning, I can hear a little Joni Mitchell in there. Yes, Page took liberties with some artist's music, but his genius was in his ability to capture different styles of music, and incorporate it into his own. Bowie did the same thing.
