People have reported witnessing miracles involving the Holy Eucharist for centuries, including the Eucharist appearing to turn into visible flesh and blood. Jimmy Akin and Dom Bettinelli examine the truth of these reports and what we should make of them. Do they represent genuine miracles?

Jimmy and Dom have got to be my favorite Catholic apologists and podcasters. The show's ability to look deep into intricate subjects while being well-researched and intellectually honest is great. As far as I am concerned, Jimmy is a Dwarven Cyborg time lord sent from the future. He never gets angry or annoyed, and somehow seems to always have the demeanor of the nicest person you've ever met that's simply interested in telling you information that you might want to know. How Jimmy doesn't have 500k subscribers is beyond me, seeing as his content far exceeds that of most (in my opinion).

I would like to add that in the Eucharistic phenomena of Argentina 1996 and Tixla 2006, the hypotheses of the researchers for the incapability of sequencing the potential DNA from the specimens is not only degradation / lack of conservation, but the absence of the second helix of DNA material that Jesus could have been missed as human, due to the lack of human father donating the second set of chromosomal material. According to some of the investigators in Tixla, without the full double helix DNA, sequencing is not possible. Also, the researchers used chain of custody of third party observers and blind testing for analytical submission. Basically, the analysts did not know the source of the samples being tested.

Specific details were deliberately kept to avoid personal biases to affect the analyses. There are far more deteriorated specimens that are subjected to DNA sequencing; hundred year old mummies or criminal evidences, for example.

We used to go to St Francis Catholic Church in Wyandotte, MI. When my oldest Son was at the Altar receiving a ceremonial religious award my oldest Daughter shook my arm with one hand while pointing with the other one towards the Altar saying “Look! Look Dad!”. I looked around those sitting in front of me so I could better see him receiving the award, it was glowing. It was truly miraculous. I watched several more being handed out and did not see that in any other instance. There were strong reasons at the time for the highlighted attention God laid upon that event. God does things He is not required to explain or define to us. He just does it for us sometimes when He thinks it to be. ❤🙏🏼

I agree that it would be amazing to sequence the DNA from not only Eucharistic miracles, but also from any Church miracle containing blood thought to be from Jesus (or from Mary). Think about what we could learn about Jesus and His mother. This could possibly become part of the investigation into new miracles. If the DNA matches authenticated miracles, then this is positive evidence that a new miracle has occurred. Thank you for the very good episode. I'm a supporter at SQPN and have listened to every episode.

Not sure this was mentioned but fun fact: the Russian Orthodox Church actually has a manual on what to if a Eucharistic miracle occurs. In a nutshell it runs like this: if a priest sees the precious body and blood take the form of flesh and blood, he is to set it aside and not commune from it and try again. If the event happens again after a second attempt at praying the canon and epiclesis, he is to proceed and commune from it because of the fact that it was either the doubts of a parishioner or the priest himself that caused the miracle to occur

Agreed with Akin up until 49:30. Say in a crime case, a napkin was put in the locked container but then later on a towl is instead pulled out. The police aren't going to say, "well, since everyone who has the key appears trustworthy, the napkin must have turned into the towl somehow." That would be ridiculous. They will rightly assume someone with the key switched the towl and the napkin, or someone else managed to get access.

It’s truly a sad sad painful truth that people think that faith is so so easy to have, just look at and try to understand of what the apostles themselves lacked,for how many times did Jesus repeat to them where is your faith or you lack faith or why are you still without faith and so on,God is more than merciful to bare and put up with us humans why because we humans don’t even have much understanding of what evils can do do us humans to doubt or have a misunderstanding of his power and truth to truly believe in him and his One Holy Apostolic Catholic Church of Traditional Teachings and Worship

Hey Jimmy and Dom! Fascinating episode again. I have a somewhat related question: Let's suppose people find a plate of hosts in the sacristy, and it's impossible to determine whether it's consecrated. Should the priest consecrate it conditionally or dispose it carefully the proper way described in the episode? Also, let's suppose someone mixes consecrated hosts with unconsecrated ones. What happens then?
@namapalsu2364

You can only licitly consecrate bread and wine in a mass. Do it outside mass, and it would be illicit, tho valid.
@belakovacs7013
@belakovacs7013 2 жыл бұрын
Still the questions remain: let's suppose you read in the newspaper that a Catholic church nearby was robbed and the tabernacle was emptied and the pastor claims there were a couple dozen consecrated hosts in there. 2 weeks later, someone breaks into another sacristy in the next town at night leaves there a plate full of hosts with a note saying these are the same consecrated hosts. But you have no way to physically check the claim.

I found the idea the transformed eucharist doesn't have the presence funny when I heard it. My reaction was which is more likely, God removed the accidents that hide the true body and blood or he created a new piece of flesh to swap with his own in the eucharist. It's like saying on the road to emmaus that he didn't hide himself but created a completely different body and just swapped in the glorified one when he broke the bread

No . Ευχαριστο / eff-ha-rees-to:/ means “ Thank”you in Greek. As usual you are applying English pronunciation to foreign words based on whst you think the letters are. Here the letter υ if pronounced as /f/. Unfortunately Greek is massacred by English speakers who think they are pronouncing it correctly but making a complete mess of it in their ignorance. Greek lesson: β is not “ beta” or the letter B. It is “ vita” the letter V. Δ is not “ delta” as there is no letter D in Greek. It is “ thelta “. D is simulated by the consonant digraph NT. Hence Donald Duck is Ντόναλντ Ντυκ Ntonalnt Ntuk. The letter B in English is simulated by MP μπ. The letter π is not “pie” but”pee”. That’s exactly what W call its equivalent in English. No letter J. Thst is approximated bt ZT or ζτ. Unfortunately American fraternities and sororities perpetuate this mangling of Greek letter sounds so consistently that people think those are th real sounds. βΣφ might be pronounced by Americans as “ Beta Sigma Fie” . It’s really “Vita sigma fee” but that sounds so unfamiliar to Americans they stick to the mispronunciation. There’s no winning the argument and just let them go. I happen to know a little about this having lived in Greece for 8 years and a little about applied phonology having retired as a university professor in 2015 and on call as an Assessment Specialist for Cambridge University. I am not trying to embarrass you as I understand that you simply don’t know. I just thought to educate you a bit which you will probably forget but it was my career for 33 years. Class dismissed.

The real presence of Jesus was on the cross when He died a horrible bloody sacrifice for us sinners. Since the Catholic Church teaches that the wine is the real blood of Jesus, then why doesn’t it always bleed His blood when the priest changes the wine? Jesus said in John 6 “the flesh profits nothing, it is the Spirit that gives life.” When Jesus said that He was telling the people that they don’t need to physically eat Him. He was saying that the Holy Spirit gives them and us the strength and faith to trust that Jesus will save us - and that is thru His bloody sacrifice where He actually died for our sins.

Jesus never said we "do not" physically need to eat Him. Infact, He did say we need to eat His flesh at least 7 times. Also, protestants tend to take Bible verses out of context so badly. "The" flesh, is in reference to us and that we will die, but our soul will live on. Due to original sin, we are no longer immortal. However, Jesus's words, "My" flesh, has a whole different meaning. He is immortal. HIS flesh does indeed gain everything. It is a saving flesh. Listen to Brant Pitre's talk on KZbin called the Jewish Roots of the Eucharist.

Jesus said this is my blood poured out for the forgiveness of sins, you can pour wine out all day long and no sins will be forgiven if it's only symbolic. Paul says you need to discern that it is the body of God... Soma Kyrios is the phrase used in only 2 places in the new testament. The first time is when the body of God is missing from the tomb... Think about it.

Are any of these “miracles “ supported by the scriptures of the Bible? God does NOT change according to the Bible, correct? The Bible was written for our admonition and instructions, correct? To instruct and guide us until the return of Christ. Are we not instructed to test the spirits? and to be Bereans? “HOSTS” in a ceremonial process that Christ Jesus said to do in “remembrance “ of him? Christians who believe in Christ Jesus and the God of Heaven (the Father) read their Bibles and know through the Holy Spirit that dwells in all those that are of Christ Jesus and God the Father, things of the evil one. Are Christians not warned repeatedly in the word of God to not be deceived? The warnings are given for a reason. All who claim to be Christians are NOT Christians. The Bible tells us this…. People of God please pray for the HOLY SPIRIT to lead and guide you to TRUTH and read and seek truth in the WORD of God.

Jesus said This is my body and this is my blood so of course we believe exactly what Jesus said. Jesus never said it was a symbol. God doesn't make fake blood or flesh...
