Though it was in fact a bit ambiguous, I believe the possibility exists that he was concerned, hence the calling in, and may have been just not disposed toward expressing his desire to be rid of it in emphatic terms. Many people fall short on the communication front or have ways of expressing things that are different from what you might expect, depending on education, cultural influence, personal psychology, and other factors.

I watched this when it originally aired and I felt this way then and I still feel this way. I don’t feel like this caller was wanting advice on how to get rid of any demons. I feel like he was trying to gain advice on how to get possessed. I worry for his soul.

I have a strong feeling he'll be getting a _lot_ of prayers to protect his soul and deliver him from this. There's a reason she has a title of Defender Against Demons. Also, if you want to pray to St. Joseph, foster father of Christ, he's also known as the terror of demons! Petitioning the whole Holy Family right now would be a great idea for us all to do.

Great episode, as usual. Something i think would be culturally (and, possibly, spiritually) rewarding: If more catholics (and christians in general) would learn the christian aspects of many of the symbols today apropriated by pop-culture. Symbols like the pentagram, the ”upside-down”-pentagram, the inverted cross, the swastika, the triquetra, the forked cross, and so on… All of the above (and many more) symbols have been used by and baptized into the church at one point or another in history and used as symbols of God and different aspects of the christian faith. I realize not all of them could perhaps be used publicly in present times (though many of them appear in older churches). But for personal devotion and to sow a seed for future developments i think knowing about them and using them more would be a good thing. For the glory of God and our spiritual growth. I first became interested in this subject reading an article called The forgotten symbols of God. It is by R.Reuterswärd in the Journal of Art History (Volume 51, 1982).

I didn't want to alienate him. I trusted that such questions would be asked once he contacted local priests/exorcists. It was more important in the moment to encourage him to make contact with them rather than doing an on-the-spot investigation of his situation that I would never be able to complete in the time we had--and accidentally discourage him from doing the thing he really needed to do: make contact. Such questions do need to be asked, in a sensitive and caring way, but this was not the time.

I’m kind of back and forth if this gentleman was serious or not about his situation, but I do see the benefit of giving him the benefit of the doubt. If he was telling the truth, then that means he now knows some steps he can take to correct things and people will pray more for him. If he was fibbing, then someone who is experiencing demonic influence may hear this and know the steps they need to take, and it serves as a reminder for us, the listening audience, to pray for those who are suffering like that even more. I do appreciate Jimmy’s emphasis on reasoning through things like this instead of immediately jumping on the “DEMONS!!” gun. It seems to me a lot of people are pointing to demons more often, and can be quite dismissive and even harsh if you try to point out other reasons for something happening. That’s not good because the person is suffering and needs help, but not knowing what help is needed can make any action someone does to try and help worthless. Not to mention it makes is look so backwards to constantly say “demonic!” when the answer is something not related to the demonic at all.

That’s cool that psychologists are working with exorcists to help people. Sometimes it’s obviously one or another, but I remember one exorcist saying that demons can gain a hold through psychologic wounds and even when a person is freed from those forces, it’s still vital to go back and address those issues. The mind, the body, and the soul are highly interconnected, so it’s best to make sure all are functioning well.

I would have also asked if he had been on psych meds, particularly SSRIs, for an extended period of time. Or if he's quite young within the last month or so. It's difficult to ask a question like that without appearing like you are accusing a person of being nuts. A lot of sane people are prescribed these pills. They can in some instances cause "vibrations", tics, and hallucinations. I noted Jimmy talking about a reverse cognition type of hallucination. After long term use the body can begin to fail to metabolize, drs love to up doses when meds "stop working" which can really tax a tired liver. Adverse events like suicidal/homicidal ideation, seizures, and hallucinations can occur in adolescents as soon as the medication reaches a therapeutic level, within a couple weeks. A person looking for solace in something like satanism, may be displaying symptoms that would be diagnosed as depression/anxiety, and subsequently be prescribed these meds. That said I absolutely believe that he could have been dealing with infestation and obsession, vexation, and if a demon/demons already have that much leverage I have no doubt they will have influenced him to believe that church is the last place he would want to be, and the last place he would be welcomed. He reached out anyway, and he got Jimmy, who convincingly stated Jesus loves him NO MATTER WHAT, and gave him simple, clear instructions. I love seeing God throw a lifeline like this, it's beautiful, it reminds me none of us are lost.

If the Eucharist is better for a possessed person, why don't they just bring the possessed Holy Communion? Is it because most (or all) possessed are not Catholic or are not in a state of Grace?

Part of it is the priest wouldn’t want to risk the Eucharist being desecrated in some way and consuming it in a state of mortal sin can invoke severe judgement on one’s soul. Another practical reason I can see is if the person is suffering from demonic possession, then the person may not be able to actually consume the Eucharist because the demon may force the body to spit it out, or maybe the person could choke if the demon affects the throat or something. Sometimes possessions can cause physical distress and movements with people, and just like you wouldn’t want to force someone experiencing a seizure to eat or drink something, one may not want to have the possessed consume anything.

It’s not just the sacrament of the Eucharist but also the sacrament of confession that are usually better than deliverance prayers. Fr. Chad Ripperger has said many times all that is needed to get rid of demonic activity is confession.

I mean I listen to this guy and the first thing I wanna know is "Are you still high from your last hit of whatever you're abusing?" Obviously doesn't mean he can't have invited demons in if he's just an addict and I doubt that demons would see being high as extenuating circumstances in which a person can't consent. However it would explain both the biological jitters he feels and the teleportation of objects. IMO he should get off drugs for two weeks and see whether the issues go away. And I have so much trouble wrapping my mind around someone not doing that before asking if he could be possessed by demons. Granted, I've never taken any drugs to this extent so I wouldn't know how impactful they are in killing rational thought.

I was on board with everything until the reception of Catholic sacraments, in this case by a protestant, was suggested as a possibility. Ecumenical guidelines and the Code of Canon Law is very specific about the reception of Catholic sacraments by non-Catholic Christians. Diabolical possession, oppression, and obsession is not one of them. The Rite of Exorcism, prayers of deliverance, and the rosary would be perfectly acceptable, however Catholic sacraments is another matter.

CCC 1401 Says with a Bishop's permission, a protestant can receive the Sacraments in dire circumstance, and if they fully acknowledge the truth of what they're receiving. It's incredibly rare, but it's up to the higher authority.

A bishop is not above the Code of Canon Law , and is obliged to follow it, unless he receives a dispensation from the “ chief lawgiver“ our Holy Father, the Pope. Diabolical influence is not one of the criteria which the Church considers as a possibility to admit non-Catholic Christians to the sacraments. In danger of death or religious persecution when the non Catholic does not have access to his own minister, provided that he holds Catholic belief in the sacraments. On a practical pastoral level, this would apply mostly to high church anglicans and Episcopalians, and some lutherans. 2. Members of the Orthodox churches , and churches of the East when they freely and of their own volition approach Catholic priests for the sacraments, may receive them. This also applies to member of the Polish National Church.
