To clarify slightly on Formula Student: it is definitely an engineering competition first, a racing competition second. The drivers are engineering students who helped build the car. Usually no more or less skill than your average driver.

Even F1 in general, i have been watching F1 for past 3 years only and started loving the scene and races, and I was always surprised how young and otherwise "immature" some drivers are compared to times of Schumacher and Niki lauda etc, I would think they need way more years of experience under their belt to be the best in the world. You are more right than some people think to say that it is a battle of the manufacturer and engineers and secrets they do in pits and before the race, thats why its a team win as shared effort, the driver is skilled and talented but if we compare raw talent i am sure there are more talented drivers in the world

If the McMurty had a Renault R25 engine in it with hybrid, it would easliy destroy the F1 car. The problem is that it is a battery car, which is okay for tracks with short straights but they normally always lose steam at 270, which at a proper track like the Nordschliefe, Le Mans or Spa would cost it seconds in lap time. Hybrids are the fastest form of powertrains, since you get the mega torque figures and inital power of batteries and the top end speed of an engine.

@@patrickfoley6590Remember that massive parts of the nurburgring are flat out, meaning top speed is much more important. The ID.R was designed for Pikes Peak where it has no such luxuries. Somewhere small with many corners like Tsukuba would lead to much closer times.
@patrickfoley6590 Жыл бұрын
@edwardking9359 Wow, old posts but whatever. The 919 is 440 lb lighter (1958lb vs 2400lb) and substantially more powerful (720ps engine + 440ps electric vs 690ps). VW would have to be grossly over reporting the weight for it to have better cornering speeds on a track. The only time the IDR would be faster than the 919evo is if awd mattered, like in a hill climb. Weight is the enemy of speed and awd adds weight. The 919 should be able to accelerate, brake, and turn faster based on the power and weight. AWD is less relevant at track speeds where there are no switchbacks.
@edwardking9359 Жыл бұрын
@patrickfoley6590 The 919 evo is AWD itself, with the ICE powering the rear wheels and the electric motors powering the front. And weight is FAR from the only thing that matters. You saw how the 919 evo was able to beat an F1 car, and the F1 car is around a hundred or so kg lighter with similar power, and is RWD only. The ID.R has substantially less power and is heavier, but it also has the benefits of being fully electric rather than hybrid, which might be enough to make up time on a tight track like Tsukuba, especially if it can get better traction out of corners. I don't think it'd definitely be faster, but it's very much worth a shot.
