Rush is a genuinely brilliant movie and its a shame it didn't do better at the box office. Lauda’s quote about Hunt after his sadly early passing is one of the most touching tributes to anyone I’ve ever read. “Of course he didn't listen to me. For James, one world title was enough. He had proved what he needed to prove. To himself and anyone who doubted him. And two years later, he retired. When I saw him next in London, seven years later, me as a champion again, him as broadcaster, he was barefoot on a bicycle with a flat tire, still living each day like his last. When I heard he died age 45 of a heart attack, I wasn't surprised. I was just sad. People always think of us as rivals but he was among the very few I liked and even fewer that I respected. He remains the only person I envied.”

Racing is safer than ever. The drivers are, however, still putting their well being at risk. It's only three years ago we lost Hubert at Spa. Grosjean was lucky to walk away from his fireball. And I don't want to think about Zhous car catching fire at Silverstone. Even the porpoising can post a dager, as it could give the drivers micro-concussions causing long term brain damage as has been reported with boxers. Moving at high speed is inherently dangerous. And while motorsport is safer than ever, we need to understand and appreciate that the drivers are taking a huge risk - for our entertainment.

It's not gonna happen, because - even though the sentiment expressed in the comments here that "F1 was kinda 'niche' back when this film was made" is nonesense - it is true that americans apparently don't care for F1 and even less for its history. The rest of the world isn't that picky, Days of Thunder was a success because it was a Tom Cruise film and nobody who watched it gave a rats arse about Nascar. More importantly however, the rest of the world has no trouble identifying with a protagonist from the angro-sphere, contrary to the apparent unwillings of the people from the anglo-sphere to identify with protagonists from outside of the anglo-sphere. Rush was actually Lauda's biography packed into a film conceived to appeal to the anglo-sphere, which is why the film tries very hard to focus on Hunt, even though for most of the film he accomplishes very little, especially compared to Lauda. *This film was doomed at the box office because nobody knows/remembers Hunt.* I had to google who this guy was and it spoiled the end of the film for me. Most F1 World Championship winners aren't remembered, more than that is necessary to remain a part of the collective memory. Everybody knows Lauda, my grandmother knew who Nicki Lauda was. You can go to any retirement home in Brazil and ask anyone you encounter there who Ayrton Senna was and you will be schooled. Same is true of Prost, because Senna was Prost's nemesis, neither Mansell or Piquet are remembered in such a way, if people remember them at all. And we both know that a film about Senna and Prost wouldn't be able to draw an american audience. Hell, Hollywood had to dig deep in the bargain bin to come up with a film about Ford vs Ferrari, because the americans know ford, the name Shelby and were willing to identify with Ken Miles, but god forbid the driver's motherlanguage were french or even german, american's wouldn't bother to see the film no matter how good it is. Ford's victory at Le Mans is a footnote in motorsport history, but it's the only bit of Le Mans history that could galvanize the interest of an american audience that's the bitter truth. That's why most of motorsport history or even world history will never make it into a Hollywood film.

I turned 11 that year. It's not one I'll ever forget. Much as I wanted Hunt to win, I was an admirer of Lauda's skill. After the accident, and after he returned (I totally blubbed at the start of the race, and again at the end. I was a watery wreck! Not because of Hunt, of course, but full of emotion for Niki) I was torn between the two of them. Yes, of course I wanted my fellow Brit to win the championship - I think that even then I understood it would probably be his only real chance at it - but being a typical Brit, I can't help but support the underdog. And after seeing the state Niki was in after that first race back, he could only be seen in that light. (I was still 10 years old at that point, so you have to remember how kids think. It's very black and white.) When it came to that last race in Japan, and I saw them going off to race in conditions only a madman would consider safe, I was terrified, particularly for Niki (by then I was a more "grown-up" 11 year-old, with a very safety conscious ex-rally driver dad - yes, that's paradoxical in ways, especially for a rally driver, but he _never_ skimped on safety standards and would explain why I couldn't do it either. He was a cracking dad :)) The world championship had lost its meaning for me at the start, it wasn't worth anyone's life. I felt - and would still feel it - that if Niki had one more big crash, especially so soon, he wouldn't survive it. I can't tell you how relieved I was, and how full of admiration, when he pulled into the pits! Then, being 11, of course I was urging Hunt on to win the championship. Nobody can accuse an 11 year-old of consistency! Excellent video as ever, young man. More please! I'm still waiting on the Pat Moss video 😜

That was a superb account. Way above the standard of any "typical" motorsports KZbinr. And yes they were both absolute legends but in very different ways.

Finally had the time to watch your video, really well done, great story telling and editing. Rush is honestly one of my favorite films, I think Daniel Brühls performance is very underrated, he absolutely nailed the voice and accent of niki lauda, not only in the original voice but also in the dubbed German version. For a German to get absolutely nail the Austrian accent of niki lauda is no easy feast, but it was brilliant.

I was hoping for more details than we got in Rush. That was an utterly brilliant movie. Having said that, seeing what a brilliant human being Lauda was, it is a good tribute to his legacy. Wherever he went he brought a sense of calm and control. Mercedes team and Lewis's six championships are true representation of what a giant he was.
