And probably the only reason the Porsche took the record was because it was on the modern form of the Nordschleife, only used because they were still building the modern GP circuit at that time. Niki's lap record was on the older version, which had a pair of ~1km straights and a hairpin (the Südkehre) where the GP circuit is now. - as you can see in images like: c7.alamy.com/comp/HKY011/1969-start-nurburgring-german-gp-germany-HKY011.jpg

About the understeer... When Lauda had had his first drive in the car, he was asked how it was. "The car is shit" he replied bluntly. "It understeers like crazy". The engineers were told to fix it and a couple of weeks later Lauda improved the laptime by 0.8 seconds (as far as I remember, it's been a while since I saw the video where he told the story).

Fun fact. The flat 12 was superseded by the older DFV cosworth V8 in the Lotus as these allowed for ground effects with large tunnels passing the engine. The flat 12 had the benefits from low centre of gravity and more power. Just one of the thousands of stories about aero being king.

I just saw a documentary about austrian F1 and Niki Lauda. After a few first laps in the Ferrari he basicly said to the crew "this car is crap, it understeers, oversteers has no grip to the surface" so they overhauled everything to fit Laudas needs. After his crash, severe injury to the lungs and burned skin he returned 40 days later for his next race. Insane, stubborn guy.

Couple of corrections. Up till 1974 the Ferrari B312 engine was everything else except reliable. One can argue that Ickx lost up to three Championships due to unreliability. Only during 1974 and the winter to 1975 they found reliability. And all those years from 1970 to 1976 the Ferrari B312 was the most powerful engine in F1 before the Renault Turbo came. The B312 had 20-50 hp more than the DFV. In 1970 it was around 490 hp and the 1975 version had about 520-530 and the final versions in 1980 had around 550 hp. IN 1975/76 even the super DFVs of Hunt, Scheckter and Reutemann had just short of 500 hp as they had 400 rpm more than other DFVs. It maybe a bit dangerous to tell a Brit that Mass never had the same engine as Hunt. Secondly, Niki had his accident in the kink leading to Bergwerk not in the following fast uphill section which is known as Kesselchen-Klostertal. I also had this missconcept for long until I was shown the actual place on the track. These two places look very similar from a high up vantage point.

Lauda in 1976 was driving the 312T2, which was quite different from the 312T. And the track was also different: basically there where two long straights and a wide hairpin, basically where now there is the F1 track. So, no corner T13.

According to Wikipedia Niki's crash was in the left kink just before the right hander, Bergwerk. I believe Niki went off at the left kink at 5:50 in this video. I remember from reading a James Hunt biography that in either 76 or 77 McLaren started using 6 gears with the cosworth dfv and it said Ferrari were already using 6. Perhaps 5 was a preference for Niki? I know he did put a lot of input into the setup and development of his race cars.
