Hey jimmy, dont' know if you know this, but it's just a suggestion so you dont wear out your belts. If you ever decide to make something else from that giant saw blade again, and you're not worried about time. Soak your cut out piece(s) in apple cider vinegar for maybe a day or two to remove the rust depending on the amount that's built up. I've done this multiple times with tools and scrap metal ive used for knife making and it works great.
@lbcustomknives8 жыл бұрын
Jimmy just a little advice, when making a knife like this.. Where the handle and blade meet, there needs to be a radius, as the square section can cause what is known as stress risers in the steel. It doesn't have to me massive just a small radius with a round file prevents this take care and keep up the great work

Looks good +JimmyDiresta ! Something I've discovered is that its pretty easy to put a chamfer/angle/round on the "bolster" part of the handle scales (that transitions to the blade) if you clamp them up using the pins as a reference before you put the knife handle between them. I usually use belt sander +/- files. You can get all kinds of transitions that way (even carve it a bit) and if they're a bit off it doesnt matter - once it's attached to the knife, the blade is inbetween the two and you can't visually compare one side to another.

+john smith Wasn't that around 4:50 ?
@johnsmith-sw7ii8 жыл бұрын
+Brandon Darensburg No....At 4:50 he is hardening the steel which makes it very hard and brittle. It must be reheated after this at a lower temp to temper the steel and make it less brittle. Some put it in a toaster oven at 400F for 2 hours...other guys like to heat it with a torch until a desired color appears. Opinions vary BUT MUST BE TEMPERED or it will snap. Put an old file in a vice and hit it with a hammer and you will see....file will snap right in half.

Mr. Diresta, I would like to share with you a couple things that I have found to be very useful. I see that you do a lot of file work and as such the files do load up with the material you are filing. I have found it very helpful to coat the file with a layer of chalk prior to using the file. It makes the file much easier to keep the teeth clean. As a gunsmith I feel one can never have to many files. While I am on the subject of files, if you have a great deal of material to remove nothing beats a rasp designed for use fitting Horse shoes. Finally, Birchwood Casey makes a product called Truoil. It is the finest finish available for finishing gun stocks. Wet sanded into the wood and allowed to cure it not only fills the pores, it also offers a waterproof barrier. After curing it can be sanded lightly with 600 grit wet or dry paper and a final finish coat applied. Manufactures of custom firearms charge as much as $500.00 for a Truoil finish. I hope you may find these comments useful in your endeavors.
