Yeah. Unless this owner is completely in denial, he'll see he's not gettin' any of 'em running in 90 days. Then it just depends if he wants to go on pretending he'll do it "someday soon" or needs the money more than the fantasy. I don't know him, of course, but he sounds like so many people I've met. Otherwise intelligent and capable, but on some, more emotional topics, completely on another planet.

Very true, very true. Jimmy's just bumped up against the toughest thing with negotiating for purchase of old planes..., which is, old plane owners who think that their old derelict plane(s) are worth what they paid for them back in the past..., and they don't need the money. Despite the fact that the plane(s) haven't been maintained or cared for properly, they still want top dollar. Jimmy was right to walk away.

Thank you for Parts 1 and 2 of this, it has been so very interesting peering under the covers of these aeroplanes and learning so much along the way. As an increasingly "older" person I can understand the "I last flew this 3 years ago..... well lets make that 10!" Time starts slipping and sliding about a bit! I do worry about the 310, and all that mouse poo and possible corrosion. The wiring and all those hard to examine systems in the wings and fuselage do make it so hard to fully restore and be confident that nothing was missed.... Thank you for sharing the "ups and downs" of this whole process in such an entertaining way. I really enjoy your show and always look forward each new episode!

The poor old guy is 88; there's no way on this earth he's going to have one ready to fly in 90 days, especially considering that a table was holding it up in the hangar. It's always the same story, in the guy's mind, he's going to fix them up, but his age and situation means that's just a dream that's becoming more and more distant with every passing day. It's hard to let go, but maybe he will see that the only way to save them is to sell them, and for a realistic price. And very good advice, Jimmy, always be ready to walk away from a bad deal. God luck
@battz99
@battz99 2 жыл бұрын
Very often nostalgia defies logic. An old guy was keeping an aircraft in a hangar on an airfield where I once kept one of mine. In his late 80s he decided to stop flying when his eyes began to go and he had difficulty finding his way back after taking off and flying around for a bit but he still kept that plane in the hangar regardless. Someone contacted me via my blog and asked if I would put him in touch with the owner because he'd seen the plane mentioned on my blog and wanted to buy it for good money but the old guy didn't want to know. After 4 or 5 years he sadly passed away leaving the aircraft in the hangar and a year or so ago the owner of the airfield also died and it's now under probate in the hands of the lawyers. The last time I looked the plane was still there and I keep meaning to let the old guy's family know because as sure as eggs is eggs soon it'll disappear. BTW Jimmy, the Aztec was always the one you should have saved. Stop banging your head against the brick wall in the form of the 310, unless you have a LOT more money than sense that is. If you are totally nuts and still need to find a black hole to pour your money into you can always return to it after the Aztec is back in the air where at least one of the hangar queens that you seem so intent on collecting needs to be at some time. Otherwise, what's the point in all of this? I'd also point out that by considering the 310 as basically a parts donor for the Californian aircraft you yourself have pretty much recognized that it's a basket case. You only have to look in the mirror and admit it.

You did good walking away from those. Any one of those could eat your lunch after sitting that long as you are well aware with your 310. It would cost more than they are worth just to get them ferryable, then you still have crusty interiors, ratty paint and antiquated avionics. As a factory-trained former DOM of a Cessna multi engine service center: those planes are scrap. They were incredibly expensive to operate even when I was wrenching on them in the 90's, every one was owned by a business or a rich person, both of which had the required piles of cash to safely (key word!) operate and maintain them.

LOL! "Converting money into noise!" It's a high price to pay for a "cool" N-number. Easier to change the plane's nickname or buy a custom N-number that's "cool enough." For me, there are cooler, affordable planes that would carry Jimmy's family than an old 310, though in my younger days, that and a Comanche tickled my fancy plenty.

Hi Jimmy, Your Beech Bonanza is a straight 35 Sn.D 147 . It's got the 185 Engine ,which is limited to 185 on take off , for a few minute , and then reduce to 2100 RPM for climb out at 165 hp.It also has the tubular main spare, which needs magnifluxed quite often, unless a spar kit is installed, and then every 500 hours. My serial number was D-1325 a 48 mod. with nose gear steering and an A model fire wall. There are AD notes on the Mags, the Spar, and the "V" tail mounting block ! There may be more, 'cause I haven't had mine for many many years. Do some home work to see if it is worth it. Bob

Jimmy, we have all seen sellers like this. Just let their stuff sit there and rot and still think it's worth way more than it is and so there it sits. That's why they have been sitting there deteriorating for way too long already. Just can't do that with airplanes. There will never be safety and reliability without major work on all of them. He should unload the pile before his family needs to do it for him at pennies on the dollar. I suggest you look at projects more in reach that you can have fun with that have not been left for so many years which require an over-abundance of risk and time to you as the new owner. Besides, we as viewers will have more fun watching you get reasonable projects up and running faster. Maybe just 1 long term BIG project on the side at a time, while you get others that are not in such bad shape flying quickly again? Good luck with all that you do and looking forward to the next video!

Hi Jimmy, It is best to avoid the early Bonanzas with the welded tube spar carry through and/or narrow tail surfaces which covers all Bonanzas built before 1952. Unless you get it for a price where you can invest the time to part it out, let it go. For saving the 310, the California 310 might be good but you are wise to really check out the engine issues/$$$. The old turbos in the 320?? The engines in the 411?? All depends what you want to do with the 320 and 411. I think you are seeing that in the absence of damage and/or corrosion, the Cessna light twin airframes are well built. What a shame the high $$ today with anything to do with engines. 50 years ago the E series Continentals were considered "old" engines but Continental had people who knew that engine and could offer a factory reman. Today I would say the E series engine issue eliminates Bonanzas built before 1957, unless they have the newer IO-470 STC. On the specific engines you are looking at in the 310s and 320 I assume you have spoken with Continental about any possibilities of a factory reman on any of those. You have probably already learned that the engines in the 411 are another breed both $$ wise and complexity. The 320 would be a real scooter up around 15,000' to 18,000' assuming there is an engine reman and turbo upgrade option that makes $$$ sense. You can sense my bias toward "factory reman" on horizontally opposed aircraft engines. You have no assurance of how they were operated or maintained before the airplanes were parked. Many of us have safely flown many thousands of hours with engines that were operated and maintained by the book.

So glad all is good after noting there was no video yesterday! This was great - wow, 4 different aircraft possibilities. But FWIW, I don't get a good vibe from that fellow, but you never know. Something might work out, or maybe it won't. Then you will know it is time to move on. One thing I know for sure is that none of those 4 aircraft will be repaired and inspected and flying in 90 days. It's just not going to happen. Great video though - I had a blast watching and waiting to see what you found when you moved a cover or opened a door. There just something about 'things' that have been sitting in one spot for decades that grabs my attention. Thanks for the fun Jimmy!

It's going to be one hell of a juggling act to make this all work. for example......low ball the v tail and part it out. could potentially net 20,000 out of that which would pay for crank work on the 310 motors etc, It would be cool to get that 320 flying again. (i once co-owned a 1959 310, wanted to trade up to a 320 or 340, Never got the chance) but parting that out could bring in more $$$ for the 411/310 project. Jimmy I have two questions first if the engines are good enough to put on 310MM why are they not good enough for the 310 you all ready have? Second that wouldn’t be saving the 310 it would be replacing it right

You see that with a lot of older people unfortunately. They are attached to it and the prices reflect that attachment. I would almost be willing to say they will still be sitting there collecting even more dust in the years to come. Lastly they asked you any city in Florida, sounds to me you might want a parachute, tuck and roll doesn't work so well at altitude.

Seller reminds me of a co-worker i had who owned a Bonanza and kept it in a hanger costing him $250 a month and had not flown it in over 10 years , out of annual the plane at that time was only worth 40k in flying condition which his no longer was and the guy had spent 30k in hanger rent instead of just selling it off. I think the emotional attachment also plays a part , interesting to see all these planes rotting at these airports cause of guys like this.

After sizing up the Planes, enough is known. Once getting back to Florida, the Seller lost his bargaining edge and will need to offer a Sweetheart Deal to bring you back. He should have realized his position and done the right thing when he had a chance. Planes seem to have a Love Affair with Owners and parting ways appears emotionally difficult!

Cessna 320, different type certificate than Cessna 310…same TC as Cessna 340. TSIO-470 not supported very well if I recall. And then there’s the exhaust issues… And that’s not a “checkup” on the crankshafts, it’s replacement.

I'm amazed at how many people have airplanes parked in hangars and on the ramp for 10-20 years. Aren't they paying fees/rent that whole time? Not to mention insurance.

Money is no object for some people... at least that level of money. Plus the power of self-deception and denial ("I'll fix all of those as soon as my back is better" and "It's only been in storage for three years.").

Jimmy, never sell yourself short, when your negotiating, don't lead with "I don't think you're going to like it". If they don't like it, they'll tell you and then if they ask for more behind why on the numbers. Just some tips from a pro!
