Great video as usual. I use sky replacement for my bird photos which don't have a horizon. The sky replacement messes up the bottom photos bit, I think, because it can't find the horizon. I wish they add the ability to zoom the sky and move it around a bit. I want to use the same sky for a number of bird photos, and I don't want them to look exactly the same. I want to move the clouds around a bit to make the photos look like I'm taking at the same location but at a slightly different angle.

For me,Luminar updated yesterday when I opened the program. So I dropped by your site to see exactly what the update included. I knew you would have the low down. The biggest pluses for me have been the speed and stability. Both are quite noticeable. I have been using Luminar as my primary photo editor for six months or so now. While I liked the results, it seemed like a lot of work to obtain what I was looking for. After a test drive of the update yesterday, editing photos using Luminar is now more fun than a chore. Hi Jim, you only focused on adding skies to the custom folder, esaier to access but apparently, it seems that, when you want to select a sky among 200 ones, just select "show custom", it simply opens a explorer folder with skies thumbnails which would fullfill my expectations.
@JimNix4 жыл бұрын

show custom folder does that preview with big thumbnails. but you cannot use it to add a sky. you choose one, write its name on a paper and, for unknown reason, all skies in custom folder are listed in sky panel and you click on it. but i don't see the difference with load custom image here you browse on same resource folder on your disk and open it

I wonder if the user skies are actually stored in Luminar? It looks like it has created or allowed you to choose a folder on your HD for custom skies and all they are doing is an aliases to a single folder and reading the directory. . So a future update doesn’t wipe out your skies, there is just one alias in your profile to that User Skies. That folder might not be stored in Luminar, it just reads the folder in Luminar instead of using Finder.
@JimNix4 жыл бұрын
hmm, I am not sure Norm, sorry but if I can find out I will share it here

this was my initial reaction too NG. This would be good as long as if a mouse over is created that it would do the same for those images in the shortcut folder created by L4 as then an update would not remove the custom skies. Hopefully Jim will give more info.

If we had previews of the skies like there is in “looks” that would save sometime during an edit.
@JimNix4 жыл бұрын
yes that would be a great feature, hopefully someday
@NormGilbert4 жыл бұрын
That might be a technological challenge. Creating the mask is very compute intensive. Why they could do easily is what they are doing with the translucent masking. Bring the sky in as a overlay over the entire frame. Yes you will see clouds and sky over the foreground but you should be able to adjust the opacity to at least see if the sky fits artistically. The effect will look just like a new image lawyer, except if you like it, press PLACE and let it make the mask and bring in the sky for real. Looks and LUTS roll over previews are not as compute intensive as they cover the whole frame globally. I am surprised this sky preview wasn’t in the 4.3 upgrade since the code is already written in so many other place in the application. That also means it should be easy enough to implement in 4.3.1. It probably never occurred to them as they were likely thinking to do a preview on mouse over required it to be based on the generated mask instead of a full screen overlay.

it would work if the background is all white, for example bc it looks for what it considers a sky, so if you have a blown out background it can slide in the sky - but honestly it's not designed for that function so it would have to be very specific in terms of how the background looked
@phlotographer4 жыл бұрын

JIm - Great intro to the new Luminar updates. It reminded me of a question and a possible Luminar subject for you. I primarily use a Nikon DSLR, but when I am out I do use my iPhone if I see an opportunity and do not have the Nikon with me. This particularly comes up when it comes to photographing skies. Obviously, the iPhone takes pictures with lower resolution than the Nikon. If I use a picture from the iPhone for a sky replacement or for an overlay, how will Luminar handle the discrepancy in the number of pixels in the images? Are there tricks to minimize any resulting problems. Steve
@JimNix4 жыл бұрын
Thanks Steve and good question. It does "stretch" to make sure the new sky will fit, so you could lose the appearance of detail in the sky, plus it may be a little more noisy. Of course you can fix those things in Luminar so it should work.

You can, actually. Bring the sky in as a new image layer. Layer transform lets you manipulate it. Once you have it as you like it, take the image layer to 100% opacity and export it. That exported image becomes your replacement sky. Perfect when you only need a sky in a corner or looking out a window or down at the end of a canyon. Usually the scale is wrong because the clouds are too big.. Haven’t actually tried this as my Mac is in the shop, but in theory it should work. Maybe Jim could try it out for proof of concept?

Got to love Lumina4, only just 6 weeks ago it stopped working so in the end had to do a reinstall, today I downloaded the new updates, yep the bloody thing has shit itself again, when it works it’s great but is it worth the headache? hmmm, I don’t know

Thanks for the summary Jim. I got the update today for my Win 10 machine but unfortunately they still haven't fixed the memory overhead problem. I have only 14 jpeg and 1 raw images in my library and if I just open 1 image for edit, not even apply any filter yet, Luminar 4.3 already puts 2+ GB in the memory. After a few filters it went up to 4GB+ and things became really slow.

Hi Jim. Great video as usual. Is it possible to crop from top to bottom or side to side (east to west) When I try to crop The image Become smaller from all the sides. In Luminar 4.2 one would just click on a yellow lock and it would allow you.
@JimNix4 жыл бұрын
yes you can use FREE CROP which is the same as unlocking it, it does not constrain you to a specific aspect ratio

I just wish Luminar would add a feature to watermark on export.
@JimNix4 жыл бұрын
It's fairly easy to add, but yeah I get that if was automatic it would be easier.
@myraposner4864 жыл бұрын
Jim & Angela both have tutorials on adding a watermark. Very simple!
@94slingshot4 жыл бұрын
I can add a watermark manually, but when I finish a roller derby game or bike race with 400-1000 frames manually is extremely time consuming.

Hi Jim , How do I get my Library in Alphabetical order, as I have searched and can find no way of doing so .PS:- enjoy your video's
@JimNix4 жыл бұрын
hi John and thanks for watching, and you can sort by filename in the upper right just above the top right photo in the library, where it says Showing: All Photos and also says Capture Time. If you click on the drop down for Capture Time you have other options for sorting. Hope that helps!

@@JimNix I Jim Having placed a number of Folder into my library it will be impossible to select by date as I will place possibly several Sub folders into one folder EG:-Coventry ,Bradfield , Birds of Pray, Wortley ,Flowers, Newcastle , York , When I have entered these at different times they just appear in the order I have placed them in and not alphabetical. Which would be very handy for me. Through experience of searching for Photos when loading into ''Say Lightroom they just go by date , So after much unravelling I now enter onto my PC direct from my camera into a'' FILE'' I previously named to file in '' PICTURES'' From there I can extract that file in any programme and know it will always be there . I was trying to create a library in L4 but as they just go in to the bottom of the pile as one enters

Hi Jim. I updated to Luminar 4.3.0 yesterday following your video. But since then my PC on Windows 10 keeps freezing and I have to end the program via Task Manager. Today it's froze after sending a photo by email and also when switching library. This has never happened in my previous version so wondering if you'd know what's going on and how to put it right? Cheers.

Performance upgrades are welcome and long overdue and FINALLY a search function in the embarrassingly basic Library module! Luminar is still not a viable stand alone solution to manage a large number of photos in my opinion, but it's a solid plug-in. In my experience stability and performance was far worse if using in standalone mode, as a plug-in to Lightroom it's much better. I think it's crippled by that Library module that the plug-in mode bypasses.
