In VGC rulesets, mindgames can also play a huge role in winning. During my climb up the ladder, I was using an Incineroar with a moveset of Flare Blitz, Fake Out, Parting Shot and Helping Hand. The main reasoning I run Helping Hand over the more traditional Knock Off or Snarl is that it synergises well with the rest of my team (a Hyper Offensive team that can operate in Trick Room) and provides a useful countermeasure against getting Faked Out or KOd that plays heavily into the prediction game. When paired with my Dialga Origin, Calyrex Shadow Rider weirdly fell into the trap of Tera Fairy, predicting Dialga will either go for Draco Meteor or a set up move like its Trick Room, while protecting itself from a Dark Move (probably Knock Off) from Incineroar. This was so weirdly consistent that I killed like 7-8 of them with Dialga’s Flash Cannon alone, because it happens Flash Cannon and Flare Blitz naturally KO it when combined, and Calyrex isn’t an immediate threat to either of them.

One of my favorite moves is when you fail a prediction, but just double down on it even though it's still a bad play... so many times the other player is like "HAHA GOTTEM" and then just goes for the play you predicted thinking there's no way you're bullheaded enough to do it again when they just "beat" you. Wrong good sir I will die eqing your Charizard!!

@tepigninja71985 ай бұрын
See this is why turn based RPGs like Etrian Odyssey and the first two Bravely Default games (the ones on the 3DS, not BDII) are often times my favorites. The fact that both sides take their turn together with who going first depending on speed or other factors I think adds a lot of depth that a simple "your turn then its theirs" could achieve. Your plan of attack for that turn could get crippled or out right prevented if the enemy uses the right move, but likewise you can do the same. It adds an element of higher unpredictability, but in turn this also forces you to think about how you plan each of your turns more carefully, do you play it safe and go on the defense? Or do attempt to crush your opponent now and risk a retaliation?

One of my favorite cases of mind games has to be when I ran regieleki alongside competitive wigglytuff in gen 8. People would go to their landorus at the sight of regieleki like they're npcs, only for them to die to a 2+ wigglytuff ice beam

like in poker, a lot of hay is made about specific "soul reads" in single moments, but imo this is the wrong way to think about the game. in a game between strong players, any single prediction comes down to luck because both players are purposefully randomizing their choices. the mark of a strong player isn't whether they can "read" their opponents but whether they can balance their range to avoid exploitability. in pokemon, this means you don't click shadow ball against snorlax because you've read their mind and are sure they're switching to gengar this turn. you click shadow ball at random, just often enough that your opponent has to choose between risking either gengar or snorlax, or going to a more passive middle ground option that lets you keep the initiative. sometimes your opponent goes to gengar and you look like a genius, but even if they don't, the threat of shadowball is preventing gengar from getting free switchins and maybe even baiting snorlax to stay in on a brick break in the future.

I have always enjoyed the variety of moves that Pokémon can have, adding into the unpredictability of a battle. Its just sad to see that some of them are just outright banned by an unofficial metagame as of recent, citing unpredictability as the core reason behind such actions. If Terastalization was banned from the inception of SV OU, I would have most likely stopped playing in PS! by now
