I had the good fortune to be posted to the 1Bn RHF during the early '70s. Bulford, Singapore, Edinburgh and of course NI. As REME attached, I invariably found myself located near the Pipe Band accommodation. Effectively, two & a half years of continuous pipe music. Bliss...for me at least.

He's talking about Military Pipe Bands. Field Marshal Montgomery is a civilian band. The regiments rarely compete, so it's hard to compare, and music like life is subjective.

The Atholl Highlanders are unique. Europe's only private army. The Duke of Atholl's own bodyguard. Mostly made up of workers on the Atholl estate and those from the immediate area. It is not on the ORBAT of the regular army, although it does bear Queen's Colours, so is technically part of it.

The smartest turned out military pipes & drums out there at the moment are undoubtedly the 1st Bn. Scots Guards, the Highlanders (4 SCOTS) and perhaps rather surprisingly to some, the Aberdeen University Officers Training Corps. That may surprise some but for a number of years now, the AUOTC have been looking immaculate when on parade. I can't say the same for the other University OTC bands nor other TA/Reserve bands. And in terms of sound, it's pretty much the same three bands again. Looking further afield, both the RHF and the Black Watch appear rather scruffy and their sound is poor and unfortunately, the RSDG is a mere shadow of the band it once was. As for the Irish bands, recent performances were certainly not inspiring. Haven't heard any Gurkha bands recently so no comment on that one. But for me the prize at the moment goes to 1SG with runners-up being 4 SCOTS and AUOTC.
