This was amazingly documented! Thank you so much for taking the time and effort in doing this! I have an MSI RTX 3080 Ventus 3x OC edition and now I'm curious to check my memory temps and see if I have to make this mod for my gaming (and folding@home) sessions. 90C or higher isn't comfortable for the long run. Zotac 3080ti has the worst thermal pads. Mine is less than a year and the VRAM temps is slowly rising to the 90s level while gaming. So I did copper shim modding (risky and you should know what you are doing) with combination of thermal pads (the thinnest - 0.5mm). Vram temps now stable at 68C while playing. Thanks a ton for the video, gave me the confidence I needed to do this on my MSI RTX 3090 Ventus 3X. I used Thermalright 12.8 W/mK pads and it dropped my memory temps while mining from 100C down to 82C! I only changed the pads on the memory, front and back and on the heat pipe where it makes contact with the heatsink! I didn't worry about changing the pads on all the other components. Lots of the pads on the caps and other components seemed to be around 3.5mm and I did not feel like stacking pads and figured I'd see how it turned out. An 18C improvement is good enough for me, saved some expensive pads as well it seems.

Congrats. most of the time it is not too difficult to change out, but when there are problems it can be frustrating. I just did a video on safe temps - its the latest video on my channel. 95-105 deg celsius is where they say you might get errors or throttling of memory. 94 is on the border, but if you've already changed the pads out, just try it out for a bit. Not sure its worth getting it down a few more degrees. Myself I lowered the memory a bit and doing 115Mh/s - you can lower the temps a couple of degrees that way.

I would not recommend changing your thermal pads at all. If your card is getting hot enough to hit 110C and thermal throttle, contact the manufacturer first. Nvidia says it’s normal for it to run that hot, which regardless of what we think, it’s covered under warranty if it fails. Changing the thermal pads on founders edition cards will void the 3 year warranty and it’s not worth it IMO. If you wanna risk it, fine but don’t cry when they don’t RMA your card because you modified it.

The temp never exceeds 50 degrees and my VRAM temp stays between 90-94 degrees max while under 100% load with 115 MH/s range and power wattage 280ish with MH/j efficiency of 0.40. The GPU fans fluctuate between 60%-90%. When I end up speaking with folks who had massive success with swapping thermal pads, I find it is often they were really pushing it or using OC or they lowered the VRAM temp by 20 degrees but were landing in the 110 degree range in the first place. Any input greatly appreciated. Cheers!

Yep I generally agree - if you're already in the 80s, its not worth changing out. 90-94 is getting to the hot end. I'd consider thinking about changing it out around 95-100deg. The problem is getting very little gain for the effort you put in. And some cards like for example the Palit RTX 3080 which I just changed was a real pain with very tight tolerances on the thickness of the pads or the whole card wouldn't work.

@JimRPG
@JimRPG 3 жыл бұрын
Pads can be disrupted easily even just by opening the card - think sticks of chewing gum before you chew it. It really depends on how good a job you do keeping the old thermal pads. If you're outside the US you could void the warranty, so do it at your own risk. In the US you can open the card and it won't void the warranty. It's not a complicated procedure though, nothing electrical here, just some screws and some fan headers (be careful with those). Important to get the thickness of the thermal pads right otherwise it won't work and either the GPU core or memory won't be touching the heatsink properly.

I tried changing the memory pads , I used Thermalright pads and arctic 5 paste. In my before case, when I mined at the settings I use, I had a GPU temp of about 54degC, , memory ~106 to 108degC, my fan speed was set to auto and it would max out to 100% (3400 rpm). After case, the GPU is now about 67degC, memory 92 degC, fan speed still on auto is now around 56% (1250 rpm). What do you think? Does thermal paste need to set or did I do a bad application (or an arctic 5 issue)? If I manually set the fans to 90%, the GPU goes to about 62 and memory 88. So I do have an improvement on the memory... just my GPU temps have gone up.

:D figured out my error, the fan sync setting was not on. With fan sync on and fan speed set to 100% I'm getting 53degC, 1 deg better than before. At 90% fans, I'm getting 54degC. I'll change the fan curve so it operates at higher than 56%, I'll shoot for about 65 to 75%.

Your thermal paste is not supposed to set (its not meant to dry out, you would be waiting forever). If you're mining run your fans at 80-90%, fans are cheaper to replace than a GPU ;).

But if it could damage my GPU then maybe I should do something?

In HWInfo if you put your mouse over GPU Temperature and GPU Hot Spot Temperature it'll say what they are. The GPU temp is the average temp on the die. The GPU hotspot temp is the hottest spot on the gpu die. Mine is 12 deg hotter on the gpu hotspot temp right now, just mining. I could potentially see it as high as 20 deg difference. There's probably nothing you can do except if you really want you can put new thermal paste on the die, but I bet everyone's GPUs are like that. Still I'd try to keep that hotspot temp down under 100 deg if you can. Turn your fan up, undervolt it a little (it'll be more efficient anyway). Don't leave it like that because your GPU is now not getting enough cooling. Your Vram is cool now because heatsink is touching it. If 2.25mm doesn't work, try 2mm. If that doesn't work - adjust your thickness by squashing the thermal pad slightly. You should measure the pad with calipers that came out of your graphics card. One card I had, I had to redo 8 times because I couldn't get the thickness right. The gpu core temp and vram temp should be approx 20-30 (max) apart when mining. Like 50/70 or 60/80... not 50/90 or 80/80 (if its too far apart, or too close) one of them is not making proper contact.

@@JimRPG HEY! Thanks so much for the info, very helpful. Appreciate it. I think my biggest mistake was getting rid of my EVGA stock pads. I mean it was still soft, and I was getting like 42/55. Which I think is good as it gets. The only thing I should've replaced was the paste. Because the paste was ROCK HARD. Right now I have ordered the ThermalRight Pads as shown in your video. 12.8w/mk. But, this time 2mm. Whereas before it was 2.5mm, and I think that was the main issue. I was thinking of getting GELID, which I hear better performance, but I am afraid if I end up with some STIFF pads? I can still cancel my order and get GELID, but just not sure if it is worth it?

@@fpshooterful 42/55 is really good! Well i did that as well on my Palit card - it was perfectly fine, and i made it worse when I opened it up... it took as i said 8 goes before getting it back to where it was.. no improvement just back to same temps. Btw - your EVGA card will have different thermal pad thickness to mine, i had a MSI card in this video. I haven't used GELID - either is honestly fine. I got it to work with thermalright so I think you can try that again. But I bought a lot of pads (of lots of different sizes) so there was a bit of a trial and error process and can get a little expensive and wasteful.

@@JimRPG Yes, i contacted EVGA, and their staff indicated to me that I needed a 2.25mm pad. But, here in Canada, we can only get 2.5mm or 2mm. And on reddit, plus couple of other users i contacted, they indicated to me 2.5mm should be fine, since i can "squeeze" into place if it didn't if. Once i got the 2.5mm pad it actually looked the same as EVGA PAD, but ofcourse "eyeing" it isn't the best i idea. And EVGA pad felt more heavier and softer. HOPEFULLY, the 2mm i just ordered by ThermalRight does the trick. It did feel soft the first time i ordered it, hopefully the 2mm size makes a difference. I am afraid if i order GELID it might be stiff. And i am about on my 6th try lol. It will 7th when I get the 2mm pad, and hopefully my last. The main reason why i did this because i was crashing when I OC'd my memory clock to 1100 when i first got this card, for gaming. Eventually ended up memory OC at 850 after 7 months, for gaming, otherwise i would crash if i went higher. So, i just assumed that the pads were getting worn out? Since i MINE on top of that. I was hoping for better temps by replacing the pads, and better OC results for gaming. For mining i was perfectly fine with the factory pads.

Thats normal i thingk for the gpu to be hotter as the temps from the memory now goes to heat sink so the gpu must get little higher if the job done right and the mem temps go almost 10 c down. So good job

MSI still has those warranty stickers but at least their GPU is functional, my Gaming OC from Gigabyte can’t handle gaming without the memories hitting 110.

Really? Yeah the gigabyte thermal pads are really bad from what i've seen from people opening their cards. The Pads get oily and leaks all over the PCB. Consider changing them out.

I've got a Zotac 3080 and zotac even encourages you to open the GPU from time to time to apply new thermal paste/pads. By the way those warranty stickers don't actually mean anything. You should check your legislation to see if you are allowed to open your card.

Hi, thanks for this video but when you replace the pads it's too fast for me. Do you have the unedited complete process on how to change them? You put a big heat sink after you added a thermal paste what was that?
@JimRPG
@JimRPG 3 жыл бұрын
Hi John, sorry about that - it was because I tried to match the script to the footage so I sped it up 10x. I've found the original footage, I'm going to post up the whole thing though its over an hour long. I'll link once I've done it. To answer your question though - to replace the pads, you undo the screw on the back of the card. Just make sure you have all the screws undone, then the heatsink and fans should only be held to the GPU by the thermal paste. You can try to pry it off slowly, if it doesn't come off you still have screws attached. When its off, be careful there's very short cables attached which you must pull out if you can (or look after them). Replace the pads. After that, put thermal paste on, then put the heatsink and fans back on as you found it (including cables you detached and attach them). Put the screws back in.

I'm having such a hard time finding the thickness of thermal pads for NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3080. For both the front and back plate. :( I estimate 2.0 mm in front, 3.0 mm in back. not sure

is this for the founders edition? There's many AIB brands for the RTX 3080 as well as the original Nvidia Geforce RTX 3080 Founder's Edition. There should be many videos out there for the 3080 - its one of the most popular cards out there.

Sorry i dont, also i think you should be ok, unless you feel like the temperatures are too hot. Temperatures are only a big concern on the GDDR6X cards - so just the RTX 3080 and 3090, runs at least 15-20degs hotter than the GDDR6 in the 3060.

if GPU temp is only 43 - your thermal pads and heatsink aren't touching the memory is my guess if its so hot, have you opened the card up before? Is it a new card or did u get it used? Either way you have to watch a video and see the thickness of thermal pad that other people used and try that. Sometimes a tolerance of + or - 0.1mm can cause problems like this. I went through a very similar issue where the GPU temps were cold and the memory was hot, but i opened up the card and put in thermal pads that were too thin. WATCH THIS!
