PUBG literally dug themselves their own BLUEhole. The only thing that's unknown is wether or not they can get out of it

Hey question: why is nobody bothered that PUBG is clearly using the coloring of Red Bull for their sport’s drink, and are upset that someone else is using a dissimilar can of pop in their game as part of their suit? Would they be even angrier if the clone had a tie in with Red Bull for real?

@Khenfu_Cake6 жыл бұрын
SsnakeBite Indeed. By PUBG's own logic Red Bull should sue PUBG. While I doubt they won't, since most companies usually have a live and let live attitude towards media imitating (not outright copying, unless it's paid product placement) their brands (emphasis on usually, of course). You could argue Red Bull definitely would have a stronger case against PUBG, if they decided to sue them over the energy drink design in Battlegrounds, since Red Bull's can design could be considered unique to their brand and probably is their copyrighted intellectual property. At least it's a better argument for copyright infringement than freaking frying pans.

This is what I was saying six months after launch. The rate at which they've added things have been staggeringly slow considering the success. My friends would tell me they were focused on anti-cheat and performance, but then that was mostly patched up and still nothing. Also early on there were reports that they were going to focus on a competitive mode which is idiotic considering how random the game is. They just needed to throw a ton of toys in the play pen.
@crowleon61746 жыл бұрын
"Pretty hard to find more devs when you are based in south korea" Funny didn't know South Korea had no internet or planes or boats or cars or horses. That is likely the dumbest damn excuse in the world to use these days. First, we are in the modern world which means with a bit of cash getting anyone, anywhere is relatively easy to do. Second, again with a bit of cash you can hire any person (hopefully qualified for the job) to relocate to you place of business. Third, China and Japan are not far away so they have no excuse for not being able to find good devs to increase the games "uniqueness". They had plenty of time to add "cosmetics" to the game but not enough time to devise new "unique" maps, guns, etc. for the game? I call bullshit on that. They just wanted the easy money to keep rolling in while doing little to nothing to maintain it. They tried to pull an EA and got bitch slapped to the floor for it. Mr. Greene andcrew just rehashed the genre and assets from other places and now has to deal with it being done to him. That I personally find funny. :P

But they aren't really. Fortnite is an arcadey mess that won't every strip away the hardcore playerbase that is huddled around PUBG. Though as soon as a game comes out to offer more in that regard than PUBG, it might be curtains for them. As it stands, PUBG will remain strong.
@bocodamondo6 жыл бұрын
yeah, but its just as jim said, theres nothing unique about PUBG, the only thing it got going for it is, it made this genre popular, so with time passing only 2 things can happen, either there will be more clones who do the whole battle royal better than pubg like fortnite, or the whole battle royale fad will die out, so either way its gonna be a lose lose situation for them
@aapocalypseArisen6 жыл бұрын
Uhm, no, sure it doesn't have anything particularly unique, but it has a solid, very harsh but rewarding to master set of mechanics. I am talking about the way weapons control, TTK, flow of combat. It is leagues ahead of Fortnite in terms of complexity in its combat, and to be honest, its not that complex, it's just its Arma roots shining through really. I see nothing in the near future to threaten PUBG in this respect, and I fear that Fortnite is the actual fad here, the diehards will stick with PUBG because of the gameplay, but the momentary spotlight that Fortnite has as the flavor of the month for casual gamers, is very likely fleeting. I will admit, Fortnite has a great artstyle it's unmistakable, but when it comes down to how it plays, its shallow and boring.

OfficeBum Do you think they care, though? They made a janky game with no artistic vision and an obscene amount of profit. Plowing those profits back into the game to retain playerbase is unncessary - they already have that money - and trying to fight a rising tide of imitators (some of which are operating on the free-to-play model) to gain enough market share for the imporvements to pay for themselves is probably a pretty difficult proposition. You seem to assume that Bluehole actually take pride in their work, but the hack nature of the lawsuit makes it look much more like they're simply interested in extracting as much money as possible from whatever's easiest.

PUBG is basically what happens when an asset flip is actually successful. On the one hand they succeeded in making a game that is wildly popular and lucrative with likely little effort or skill involved. The downside is that since nothing in it is original every other publisher is free to copy it whole sale with no repercussions, and the developers seem to lack either the skill or desire to make the game unique or simply fix the bug s the game already has. Their only desire to to make as much money as possible and thus resorted first to stuff like micro-transations, loot boxes, and now to threats of law suits over copyright.
@Hexagonaldonut6 жыл бұрын
...Holy shit you're actually right. I'd never thought of PUBG as basically an asset flip until you pointed it out. Because yeah. It basically is. I feel even less bad about this than I already did! Which is pretty hard because I already had zero sympathy.
@cassidy83076 жыл бұрын
Asset flipping is not taking assets and making them to be artistically coherent with the rest of the game and making the game play decently. Asset flipping is buying assets without adding anything original and selling it on the store to make a quick buck.
@shadowspider96 жыл бұрын
It's known for a fact most of the environments and objects in PUGB are from an asset store and just plopped in. The difference with PUBG is they purposely went with a bland design so that so generic style assets would not clash regardless of what asset store they are from. Obviously some effort went into the game considering it works as it's supposed to (though I've heard it's also full of bugs).
@ZexMaxwell6 жыл бұрын

Pubg is the example you can go to whenever someone says "GAMEPLAY IS THE ONLY THING THAT MATTERS!" because the devs of Pubg only cared about the gameplay. They made some pretty successful gameplay too. But they did it with an asset flip, so when someone came who cared about more than just the gameplay (and had the resources to implement it) - everyone thought it was better, because it was better. Graphics do matter. Art direction does matter. Personality matters. Gameplay is not the only thing that matters!

It's disgusting how many games copy the iconic backpacks found in PUBG. I've played loads of games and a great number of them have backpacks. Sometimes they're just cosmetic, sometimes they give you distinct advantages by offering additional inventory space for example. Those are not just cosmetic, it's really unfair. I'm not sure who at Bluehole Studio Inc. invented backpacks, and admitted... carrying larger weights spread across broad bands on your shoulders is fantastic and works well, but it does give you an unfair advantage over people without backpacks. I seriously don't get the appeal of battle royale games. It's like a standard competitive shooter where you either die immediately after the match starts or you have to wait half an hour between shootouts doing nothing. I was watching a friend play Fortnite with his team the other day and it was boring as shit. On a different note, holy shit those transitions between Fortnite and PUBG were jarring as hell. Fortnite: colorful, upbeat, a bit cartoony; definitely has a unique identity and is pleasant to look at. PUBG: gray, bland, lifeless; looks completely soulless and generic, and the juxtaposition with Fortnite makes it downright depressing to look at.

Give Radical Heights a try. Its surprisingly fun and tense. Reminds me of the good ol days of SOCOM where death was final, per round. I hate modern fps with respawning. You just run around and kill until you die. Some games try and incorporate team based mechanics and sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't, but when you only got one life to live you wanna spend it by being a winner.
@Hexagonaldonut6 жыл бұрын
Oh trust me, part of the reason I wasn't interested in PUBG right from the beginning is precisely because it's so bland-looking. I don't judge by graphics, but I *do* judge by aesthetics, and boy does PUBG have none of that. Really, it was easy to tell right from the beginning that it had no personality.
@miniclip11626 жыл бұрын
watching and playing a battle royale game are completely different things. i can't *stand* to watch gameplay of pubg or fortnite (unless its northernlion because hes actually funny and the game is just a vessel) but both pubg and fortnite can make my heart pound and very little other games can do that. the thrill of not knowing where your next enemy is, is enthralling for me. i can understand that not everyone would be into that. but that is what makes it fun for so many people. plus if you go in solo, your skill alone can make you win/lose. where as in games like overwatch and counterstrike it's more about teamwork.
@miniclip11626 жыл бұрын
i mean pubg is a fun game, but what you said is hard to argue with. people who like pubg like it in *SPITE* of its graphics. i think if you look up the definition of bland, pubg comes up.

I'm someone who likes PUBG, and doesn't like Fortnite, but only because I prefer the gritty realism in PUBG and don't care for the overly simple shooting mechanics in Fortnite, or it's cartoony style. With that said, Jim is 100% right in everything he says in this video. Fortnite's art style, while not particularly my thing, has been done very well to distinguish it from the competition, as have a number of strategic choices they made with gameplay mechanics and in-game items. If you ask me, Epic was very smart in how they went about making Fortnite. They made a game that would appeal to casual gamers, and made it a very competitive online game, complete with in-game currency geared to keep players hooked. Pure genius. PUBG on the other hand had first mover advantage in a way, which they're still enjoying to an extent (other than being overtaken by Fortnite). Apart from that, the advantages PUBG has are decent gunplay realism, and the gritty realism of the art style, which some people do legitimately prefer. But a couple of points on that: 1) As soon as a better developer, with better programmers, makes a realistic PUBG rip-off, PUBG will have no advantages over any of it's competitors, and 2) Though they chose the art style, they didn't make a lot of the assets, so they have no right to sue anyone. Basically, PUBG is fucked the moment a more competent dev makes a realistic battle royale game, as their only advantage will be the first mover advantage. Not to mention the fact that every time PUBG receives an update, it introduces new bugs, and sometimes re-introduces old bugs that were previously fixed. The game is terribly optimised, and programming for it seems to be done by amateurs. It actually runs worse on my PC now than it did in early access, that's how well they've done optimising the game since it was officially released lol. Again, as I feel I should clarify this to avoid being flamed by fan boys (let's face it, that'll happen anyway): I'm saying all of this as someone who downloaded Fortnite, didn't enjoy it at all, and stopped playing it after only handful of games; I don't like Fortnite at all. And, I have played PUBG quite a bit, and thoroughly enjoyed playing it with a close group of friends. The tension in the room when we have a lan and play PUBG gets insane, and when we win a game we all feel happy as pigs in shit. I think the PUBG formula is pure gold, but it's just a pity it's been put together by an egotistical and incompetent developer. If a competent dev released a realistic battle royale game, with all the features of PUBG, I'd jump on it immediately, as would everyone I know who plays PUBG.
@maxheadshot32876 жыл бұрын
Nice comment, personally i don't care about competitive online shooter (they are pretty much all the same which means run and gun) but PubG delivered a somehow realistic concept of battle, which means that camping, hiding, taking cover, getting in a better position, ressource management and even simple luck is the major part of any real battle. For me it's not boring, it's building up tension. But the market prefers plain entertainment and neverending action for no reason, that's boring as hell for me. Watching half of players going immediately for early fights without any ambition to achieve something is proving that. But this is how the games market works, it's pretty much a miracle that PubG has come so far in this childish and cartoonish environment. Fortnite looks like pure nonsense to me, but nonsense is seemingly a requirement for success.

I was dreading putting my feelings down in a wall of text but you did it for me! In all honesty I feel Fortnight BR only succeeded cause it attracted kids. Free to play? 13-yr olds love that! And they also love an art style like a vat of melted crayons poured over a cave drawing landscape. But that's my preference. I'll be honest I refuse to pay for loot crate keys as I've already paid for the game once. And they are a bit too slow on updating, sure. But the game is stable for me, fun and gives a feeling of satisfaction. Once a better version comes out (and if I can afford it) I'll happily move over to it. Until then I'll be sticking to PUBG.

As soon as you recognize that popular != good, it's easy to see that PUBG is a bad game. It's a terribly optimized pile of store-bought, unoriginal assets with an unoriginal concept and gameplay mostly consisting of nonstop running in a given direction. Oh God, and the developers are even worse than the game they made. They outright lie about not implementing microtransactions and then implementing the worst kind, fundamentally misunderstand the industry that they're in and apparently can't understand that they don't own anything other than the title and the cover art, and refuse to do what early access was made for, improving the game to make it ready for release, and instead juice it for more money and not do anything. Fuck these guys.

The thing is, games like Fortnite and PUBG feature bad-ass shooty people being gun masters. A game based on Battle Royale would have poorly-trained, frightened, fragile schoolchildren who are more likely to shoot themselves than someone else. If you approached the game as more of a psychological horror than a straight shooter, it could be very effective, more about stalking wide-eyed, frightened teens with a knife than leaping over rooftops with a missile launcher.

The story was called Battle Royale. It's what popularized the genre. It's been remade tons of times. It's also a pretty screwed up story. This lawsuit is ridiculous and embarrassing. All the defense needs to do is put up screen shots of Day Z, Arma and PUBG and ask people what game each screenshot came from. I've played them all and I'm not confident I could tell you the right answer all the time. That said I still enjoy PUBG. I never found Fortnite as fun. Though I will agree Fortnite is a much more recognizable brand and has way more "flavor". PUBG feels like a team lacking any artists. It is a very mechanical experience, and sort of highlights why even in an age where you can literally purchase a game engine and art assets it's still important for a brand to have it's own artistic style as Jim points out. At this point it's way too late to change that about PUBG. I think they should just give up this weak attempt at posturing and just move onto the next project having learned these lessons from their experience with PUBG.

I wonder how much they actually 're-made'? Have they re-crafted all the assets the engine uses? Have they made the entire engine from scratch? Because EVEN IF they did, it looks exactly like everything we've seen in Arma so far! Making the point of PUBG a victim of somebody else ripping them off, even more ridiculous.

As an outsider who hasn't played either but has seen plenty of footage. PUBG looks dull as dish water, cookie cutter environments and a slow pace where the best tactic is to hide and hope for luck with drops / the death circle. Fortnite, on the other hand looks vibrant and like it has a much faster pace and chaotic play style, with more room to shape tactics via the building mechanism. So, based on those external observations, I'm not surprised Fortnite took the limelight.

I'll be honest about my opinion; PUBG looks boring, aesthetically. Some people may prefer gritty realism, but, for me, I really like the colorful, somewhat cartoonish look of Fortnite.

You forgot to mention how the Fortnite battle pass actually gives you back your money (Vbucks) and can be used to buy the next seasons battle pass. I've never seen that before in a game.
@MeeTonToE6 жыл бұрын
John George It's worth noting that in order to get your money's worth of premium currency, you have to spend a lot of time playing to rank up the Battle Pass. It's a time investment that keeps its audience engaged. As a side effect, Battle Pass players will be more likely to show up in games and potentially influence non-paying players into purchasing a pass themselves. It's a well designed system that contributes to the game's success and the audience's approval.

Also worth noting, the PvE mode (Save the World) has a few daily quests for you. Each one rewarding you with 50 Vbucks. Then there's collection completion (multiple rewards, Vbucks included) and event quests that give 100 Vbucks (nearly always has SOMETHING going on).

how is it a copy and paste game? They literally invented the battle royale genre in 2012... First there were minecraft and DayZ(the mod, not the standalone) gamemodes based on the hunger games movie. Those games spawn all players in a circle with loot in the middle of it and randomly across the map. He was inspired by that and made the battle royale gamemode (based on the movie and book battle royale) first for the dayZ mod and then arma 3 in 2012/2014. That however was very different from any similar games before. It was the first time i am aware of where they spawned players on a plane with parachutes. What game did they copy and paste from?

One big point that lot of people seem to miss is that Arma 3 had an battle royale mode where people parachuted into the map by plane and it had extremely similiar themes to PUBG. And it came out before PUBG and PUBG looks closest to Arma 3 battle royale

Film is adapted from the 1999 novel of the same name. But the idea is pretty much as old as humanity itself. Whole world is a giant Battle Royale, just a lot more complex.
@jort93z6 жыл бұрын
Yup. the first battle royale game was playerunknown's battle royale back in 2012 for the dayZ arma 2 mod. Shortly after that they made a battle royale arma 3 mod which was a lot more popular than the dayZ mod gamemode. Pretty sure playerunknown coined the name for the genre.
@paulsilagi47836 жыл бұрын
Nope the name comes from the japanese novel "Battle Royale", written by Koushun Takami and published in 1999, which has basically the same premise, shrinking battlefield and all.
@jort93z6 жыл бұрын
Well, the movie adaption of "battle royale" was released in the same year playerunknown started developing his battle royale mod. So i believe he was inspired by the movie, not the novel. But playerunknown was the first one to use that title for a game genre. Thats why i would say he coined the name for the genre, though of course thats not his phrase. If we take music genre as an example. If someone is the first to use the word "metal" to describe music, i would call that coining that term, even though the word metal existed before. But someone was first to use that to describe music. And now playerunknown was the first one using the phrase in that context, so he coined it. The battle royale games are also fairly different from the movie.
