Gilson used a DMCA and it went totally Gilson yet again. (Also, as an aside, I love that he clearly discovered a leaf particle screen shader and decided to apply it _to the entire game even if you aren't anywhere near a tree._ It's a step up even from how he constantly uses hideous overblown light filters and stylised colour and contrast to try to hide atrocious empty visuals. It's the game design equivalent of someone who phrases their arguments as pretentiously as possible when they're trying to hide that they don't have a valid point to make.)

Easy - make something you've always wanted to make but have absolutely no education, training or experience in (I recommend neurosurgery) then spend ages on your new project without showing it to anyone or letting them test it. After spending most of your time focusing on tiny details that make your project look "epic" (lens flares go with anything), you release your project and charge the same as more experienced, professional creators because you think you're just as good - if not better - than them. Then you go off and shove a bucket on your head so you don't hear any criticism. If you hear anything negative then dismiss them as trolls because you spent longer then anyone with your project, therefore your opinion is worth much more compared to someone who's only experienced your magnum opus for two hours.

I'm going to do it, I'm going to make a gilsonlike and it's going to bring the genre to new heights. I feel like my almost 15 years of game development experience (but mostly the fact that I own the Horrid Spider asset) can really help move the genre forward.

What is the threshold? If you try to improve on the Gilsonlike genre, at what point does the game become good enough, that it is essentially, no longer a Gilsonlike? 🤔
@wayfarergames
@wayfarergames 2 жыл бұрын
@@gremlin66n I think it must remain a shitpost, if it ever stops being a shitpost it stops being a gilsonlike. Run, die, repeat must be the core gameplay loop, with maybe a little bit of story context but very little else. My plan is to have all of the core gilsonlike features, but gate them off based on how many times you've died 😉 I've also got plans to streamline the core gameplay loop by making the attack a little flashier to draw attention to it, remove the collider from the enemies entirely, and have a dynamic camera system that frames the enemy as it's killing you, while removing control from the player in a slightly frustrating way. Ragdolls on death may also increase enjoyment without losing the core gilsonlike vibe
@luccaladinig2783
@luccaladinig2783 2 жыл бұрын
@@wayfarergames You should also remove the automatic respawn! Upon death, the camera simply starts circling the player avatar, and the game only continues once the player presses and holds a button that isn't shown on screen and is only used for this specific purpose. The lack of such a feature is a huge oversight on Gilson's part, there.

Do you know what this feels like? It feels like someone got a hold of a game design course's projects and is releasing a different student's project for the same course each year. That's why they're essentially the same game but at various levels of competence and feature richness. Come to think of it, the fact that it happens once a year makes me think there's a game design "prof" out there who, every year, gives the same assgnment to their students, and then releases the "best" delivery under a fake name.

Gilson has to have completely lost his mind at this point. I'm just picturing him in his house, windows blacked out, the walls and floors and ceiling awash with innumerable clipped letters and words from newspapers and magazines artfully arranged into semi-legible phrases lavishing imaginary praise upon Gilson B. Pontes and his paradigm shifting games. Amidst this place of mad devotion is a life size print of James Stephanie Stirling, with their eyes 'X'-ed out and a big black frown scrawled across their face, and a speech bubble next to them saying "i'M a BiG pOo-Po0 bUm i WiSh i CuD mAkE gAyMs aS GuD aS -mE- i MeAn gIlSoN, tHe BeSt vIdEeO gAyMs mAkAr eVa." I really do hope we see an interview with Gilson some day, because Im genuinely curious if there's some kind of explanation here. Is there some kind of artistic intention behind the long, tedious, mostly featureless, and almost certainly doomed to failure gameplay loop? Is perhaps the act of making these games the art piece, rather than the individual games themselves? Is it some kind of commentary on something, Gilson's views on life or society perhaps? Is it far more likely that all this is actually just some kind of Uwe Boll-esque tax fraud scheme?

The idea Gilson might be an AI is probably less a joke than you might think. Sony birthed the most advanced AI ever and its whole reason for existing is putting out bad games and acting like a terrible dev. That way Sony can show its human devs what not to do. Yes, they kind of stumbled at that last part.

@@seanhennessy3968 That's my theory. I also think that's how the Tencent has so much influence through Epic Games. Sure, on paper they don't own the majority of the company, but I think they're funneling tons of money to Epic through in-game purchases from botnet accounts to try to challenge Steam with money alone. It's not really working imho, no matter how many (timed) EGS exclusives they pour money into. I suspect Tencent hates Steam because Steam basically controls the western PC gaming market and doesn't buy into the Tencent/CCP BS the way everyone else seems to. They've infiltrated all the other entertainment markets, but Steam holds steady. I'd love to see Epic get audited. I can just picture an auditor looking over transaction records and saying, "Wait, you received all this money for skins... from accounts that never played the game?"

I honestly had forgotten about the last true auteur of the videogame medium Gilson B. Pontes' existence. But he has returned so that JSS can shower us with their commentary on the new genre, nay, new medium that is the Gilsonlike. People call them the "Dark Souls of understandable media", the magnum opus of inexcrutable garbage that defies anything resembling coherence, so only JSS themselves (thank GOD for them) can provide the adequate commentary for such masterpieces of shit.

Watching this video gave me an idea for how to make a Gilson-like that was actually fun. I have no skill in making games so if anyone wants to take this idea and run with it, go for it! You have my blessing So basically the story would be that you, a random person, got immortality powers somehow. Doesn't matter how. But in the process you find out that some god / otherworldly being is planning on destroying the world because they're bored with it. You are not strong or skilled in anyway, but you figure with your immortality you can try to save the world by making it more entertaining for the god. So the gameplay would basically be you spawn, get to an enemy, then try and survive the fight by making it last longer. The more you dodge and block attacks the better. Maybe you could throw in ways to get the enemies to use their abilities in interesting ways. Like getting them to friendly fire each other or something. Or get an enemy to knock down a house. Just whatever. The point is YOU can't actually do anything and can't hurt the enemy in any way, so the goal is to make the fight more entertaining by manipulating the enemy until you inevitably lose. Then you die and respawn because that's the power you have. You could just have different fights around the map and the goal would be to get high scores on each one or something. I think there's a way to make a fun game out of that formula. Which granted is antithetical to a Gilson-like so maybe it wouldn't actually be one. But whatever.

Actually, this game is masterful satire of the current state of politics in the world. You simply run towards the world's problems with your sword of idealism drawn, hoping to strike down the problems of the world, only to be defeated yourself by the enemy, who represents [LATE STAGE CAPITALISM/THE WOKE AGENDA/THE LIZARD PEOPLE]. You then are forced to walk through purgatory, trying to find out where you went wrong, only to reappear in the world to try again before you're struck down again. Ahigaru: The Last Shogun is nothing less than one of the best pieces of commentary on man's futility to change the world around him that has even been made.
