One thing I love about the visual design of this game is that it doesn't all just look horrible. There's plenty of horrific imagery and disgusting places.But otherwise it looks like a real, beautiful landscape where something bad is going on. It doesn't just make out like with the rats comes terrible weather and darkness. The setting is incredibly grim purely because of all the blood and bodies, not because they make the landscape needlessly dreary. I think that's incredibly effective, it makes the bad shit stand out so much more. If you took all the bodies away and made it a "walking simulator" style game like Everybody's Gone To Rapture you'd have no idea it was designed to be a horror stealth-survival game, it looks magnificent.And then of course, the disgusting stuff is creepy and well designed too.

I argue that It's really a way more complex game than most released this year Stealth games aren't simple or easy, doubly so when you can't just mow down the problem once you get within arm's reach of a guard. Too many stealth games now rely on being able to do 'sick takedowns' and solve entire rooms of problems instead of providing a clear, concise path for the player to go through or presenting the problems like a puzzle. (Looking at you, modern splinter cell). It may look simple if it's just distracting guards to walk around them and trying to fend off rats, but I contend that's still more complex presentation for a stealth section than kill guard -> use ability kill guard -> use ability.
@SynphamyMusic5 жыл бұрын
@@bmylyzgtsqyfw I haven't finished this game yet but i find the stealth in this game about medium. It doesn't get too frustrating but like Jim said, they create the atmosphere so well that it never feels like you're just breezing through it either. I think the focus is more on the experience and the story, and rightfully so, they set this world up to be so bleak and disgusting, it wouldn't be appropriate to feel accomplished every time you get through a section because the characters are still in a dire situation, at least that's how i feel anyway. This is a feeling i haven't had since earlier game of thrones or Lord of The rings, when the gorgeous world is so drained of colour it really reinforces that sense of doom, like nothing good ever happens so it makes you want to find out how they get out of the situation. So yeah, in this case, i really don't mind stealth being more simplistic, they got it exactly right for the tone of the game.

Very relieved by this piece. I've been glancing at this game off and on, too hesitant to consider buying it because I wasn't sure if it was what I was looking for in a game or not. Glad to hear that it actually explores the characters and their reaction to all the horrors of the world around them. I'm looking forward to picking this up!

thanks for recommending this little gem, Jim. I just finished it right after finishing TLOU2 and I gotta say I enjoyed my time much more with this one. the pacing is just so much better here. and the story goes places, man. when I first saw the trailer and this Jimpression I had thought I'd seen everything this game had to offer, but it actually saves up some surprises... and it's just so consistently beautiful _and_ horrifying from start to finish with some incredible set pieces in pretty much every chapter.

Isn't it interesting that a linear, story driven game is seen as refreshing? I adore this game and its characters.
@MelAncholynus5 жыл бұрын
Certainly. I hope it gets enough sales, because a lot of gamers are going to be turned off by it's longevity. 10-12 hours would have been considered just fine back in the 90's or early 2000's... But nowadays, since online rpgs and looter shooters, many players expect to be entertained for thousands of hours per game. And many of those aren't willing to give another type of game a chance. Some seem to confuse time committment with quality time, and that's sad.

This almost made me cry. I love every one of your videos (thank god for someone with a smart, dissenting voice) but.... it makes me sad to hear you angry all the time because I know that anger eats away at the soul if it isn't tempered with enjoyment. The pure gratitude and heartfelt joy in this video is so poignant BECAUSE of the stuff you usually cover and your vehement feelings about all of it. I hope more games come out that make you feel like this. I love your positive videos when they are put side by side with the critical ones. Thanks, Jim
