Player characters in survival games : Starving to death in less than 10 minutes. So realistic and fun. Imagine if real humans needed food that often.
@swishfish88588 жыл бұрын
In defense, these games also have super short day cycles as well. We can assume that survival game worlds operate on a much faster rate of time than the real world, which would explain the need to eat so often.
@toomanyaccounts8 жыл бұрын

The game world is faster, but still people don't starve to death in a day (i.e. if I eat a bronto egg or 3 stakes in the morning on Ark I shouldn't be starving by nightfall). Probably should lose stamina over a couple of game days or something first but still I guess you have to balance for game play and If I can build an entire building in one day (getting enough processed wood from the surroundings) I guess I can starve in one day and not complain about it.

To be completely fair, it's not the traditional use of that trope. It's closer to a zelda game (and I can hardly believe I'm making that comparison either) where you find stuff in the environment that allows you to accesss a bunch of different locations in the overworld. Of course, in zelda you pick up a variety of items that flesh out your toolkit, where in this you just pick up boring keys, but still, same general principle behind it... it's just that one's executed way, way worse.

Can we just examine the design of the game for just a minute? You start off in a massive bunker that could easily hold off any zombie apocalypse with some food around no less and its surrounded by a lake which provides a natural defense against zombies, but you refuse to clean out the zombies in it and abandon it because...Reasons? You also have to swim across said lake to get to the zombie infested city with little munitions and a pistol, nevermind the fact that the player character looks like a jogger more than a zombie survivalist. And finally, instead of, oh you know, scavenging for supplies and finding survivors to help you in the apocalypse, like any good zombie game would do, you instead have to do a stupid collect-a-thon of key cards to access different areas, because nothing says zombie apocalypse than searching for key cards and walking blank walkways void of anything, including ZOMBIES. Also, you can't use a helicopter, even though it's clearly running and probably has enough fuel to get you out of here. I R SMRT ZEMBE SEVEVER!

Dragongelf Well, the player character could have: Find a survivor who can pilot the helicopter Locate a book on how to pilot the helicopter Get on the Internet somehow to find a guide on flying the helicopter Try to figure out flying the helicopter on her own (though that may be unlikely) Take the fuel out of the helicopter to use on a car There are several ways that the character could learn to fly the helicopter or least be of some use. I didn't put down the reasons because it would make my original comment longer.

It automatically uses food when your hunger drops enough. You had the first "food" held in reserve for a bit of time before it was automatically used. As a bonus observation, you probably would of had way more bullets/food if you had killed 14 zombies with head shots. Since they dropped items each time you killed one. Though I totally agree both food and bullet drops give an insanely tiny amount; two whole bullets and a tenth of your hunger bar, respectively.

The best use I've seen in games for food has been stat boosts and essentially making them an inventory item and making tradeskills somewhat useful or fun. Survival meters would work I think if they were tied to stats. For instance if you sprint everywhere your sta would overall increase because you're exercising and increase the length the sta lasts as it depletes. So it would still deplete as you use it which is annoying but as you use it it got stronger. Sorta like GTA stats etc...

@WolfCoder8 жыл бұрын
What you said might be true for large developer studios, but if you're a relatively unknown indie dev, you're actually constantly making first impressions over time. It is very good for small indie devs to constantly improve their first impressions, and you can even relaunch down the road just fine.... But I don't see THIS game going anywhere.
@Keyfur918 жыл бұрын
Early Access games should NOT cost anything to play - instead, Steam developers should make their Early Access games into free to play demos, like the good old days of the Playstation One where we could buy demo discs containing samples of new upcoming video games. That is how Early Access should work; give us your WIP / prototype product for free, let us give you information to help with the final build, and charge us money for the finished version. That way, developers will HAVE to put effort in to their games if they want to get our hard earned money!
@Keyfur918 жыл бұрын
I'm just saying maybe offer preview samples at much cheaper costs so people don't feel ripped off in the event you try to sell them an asset flip. I'd rather have my time wasted than my money spent on nothing. And yes I know nobody wants their time wasted either, but it's the better outcome considering what a lot of developers on Steam are like these days.
@Keyfur918 жыл бұрын
Also, I agree. Patreon and Kickstarter (if need be) would provide better opportunities for funding, especially since you'd HAVE to give proof of your game being developed and improved, as well as letting your backers know that you're doing the job lest you want your backers to immediately pull out and you lose the potential funding.

He's made his view clear many times, even detailed in a Jimquisition episode a while back. But the jist is that he agrees with you, and that it's become part of the "survival game" checklist despite the fact that the only meter any major survival game ever needed was health.
@thomasjenkins75068 жыл бұрын
the stamina bar in this game isn't bad. it's actually a pretty good one. the bad ones are the kind that run out after 2 seconds of sprinting and take 2 minutes to refill. you can get a good 30-60 secs out of this one and it refills in about 10 secs.

I have to say I agree with Jim on first impressions. You only get one and when I get a game that isn't complete or is seriously broken I don't go back to it. I don't care how much they patch it I'm done, they didn't give their all and released an unfinished product with the "early access" excuse. Fuck that, especially if you are charging for it. There are a lot of developers and programmers making games that don't resort to that shit, and you can't use the excuse of "needing feedback" for a broken game. I counter that with Yandere simulator, the guy is adamant that it isn't sold yet as it isn't finished, but it isn't broken or released as something to just play with (even though you can) he actually did it because he wanted help about bug testing as well as some feedback on mechanics. And he doesn't charge you for that! I am waiting for that to finish as I am not spoiling the game, and I believe that one will finish as it is a labor of passion and not of money unlike garbage like this game which is shat out to make a quick buck never to actually be finished. Stop supporting the half assed bullshit of shitty devs. The public acceptance of garbage until the shit level reached their eyebrows is what caused the 80's game crash, and frankly were up the same river inundated with trash.
@G00N3R78838 жыл бұрын
Totally agree with Jim's views on early access and first impressions. For the last 3-4 years I'm averaging buying around 35 new games a year (and yes I do play them all). We know last year there were over 4,200 new games released on Steam. I currently have 64 games on my wishlist and I'm already looking at some and thinking "I don't really have time to play that". If your game's first release is crap, I'm not going to wait around on the off chance that in 3 years it *might* be good. I'm going to hit not interested, and now Steam doesn't show those games in your personalised store anymore, I'll never see your game again.

Everyone should be harsh on Early Access. Those games cost money just like any other product. If the developers want to avoid criticism they can finish their game before charging money. And yes, a game has launched even if they start unfinished in Early Access. Launch is when you put it out there for money. Again, if developers want to avoid this, they can wait until they finish the game.

or launch when they were 90% complete as opposed to a beta state or often as is the case an alpha test state. one game I am in that is a closed beta they are only doing early access when it is 90% done at a lower price and only a few months before release at full price. guess what the beta testers of the game get. they get the game when it goes on the store for free since. most of these early access devs treat early access as freaking beta testing that you the consumer have to pay for instead of the other way around.

I think the title just perfectly symbolizes the fucking state we're in when it comes to quality control. There is no way out, is there? Just a never-ending barrage of barely working and insipid shovelware pushed by 'developers' abusing the trading card system to make a few bucks.

What the game didn't explain is that the protagonist has hyper-metabolic diabetes, and that if she doesn't eat something every 3 minutes, her body starts eating itself and she passes out. That's my explanation anyways.
