This model train video features six different G-scale trains running on a temporary layout inside my house.
The first locomotive to appear is the newest one in my collection. I bought it for myself for Christmas 2020. It is manufactured by Bachmann and is based on a train called the Glenbrook that used to run in the Lake Tahoe area of California and Nevada back in the days when steam trains were common.
Other model trains you'll see in the video are an Amtrak passenger train made by MTH... Thomas The Tank Engine and Percy, from the Thomas & Friends collection by Bachmann... The Coca Cola train by LGB... and the White Pass passenger train from LGB.
This layout existed for about 36 hours. I started setting it up in the morning, and it took me most of the day to get it all set up and running well. The next morning I started shooting the video. That evening, I picked everything up and put it all away again.
The truth is that the title of this video is an inside joke between me and my wife. A frequent comment that people leave about my model train videos is that I must either be single or that my wife was away at the time. In other words, they find it impossible to believe that anyone's wife would let model trains take over the house. In fact, my wife and I will be celebrating our 40th wedding anniversary soon, and she actually encouraged me to buy model trains in the first place. In spite of what the title of the video says, she was not actually away when I set this layout up and shot this video. We have a very large house and she has a very large room where she can work on her hobbies. She was in her room... which we call "the craft room" because it is full of sewing, embroidery, and quilting equipment... the entire time I was shooting this video. And yes, she had the door closed so that she didn't have to listen to all the train horns and train whistles! So, now you're in on the joke behind the title of this video.
I shot this video on January 27th, 2021, using a Canon EOS 80D DSLR camera. All of the POV shots which show the view from the train were done using a GoPro.
The Glenbrook steam train and the White Pass passenger train move very slowly and are simply incapable of going any faster than what you see in this video. They are two of the slowest trains in my collection of 21 G-scale locomotives. You can learn more about my model train collection, as well as see a complete list of all 21 locomotives in the collection, at www.jimzim.net/...
I worry that people might get a little bored with this video and not watch it all the way through because the trains are moving so slowly. In my next model train video, I'm going to focus on a much faster train: the Amtrak passenger train. That will be a much shorter video, shot on this same layout, but I think people may find it more interesting because it will be done entirely with POV shots from the GoPro mounted on the Amtrak train and you'll get a much more interesting sense of speed when you watch it. Look for that video in the coming weeks. Subscribe to my channel so that you don't miss it, and turn on KZbin notifications if you want KZbin to let you know as soon as that upcoming video has been released.
The very last shot at the end of this video was an accident. I mounted the GoPro on top of the White Pass caboose and didn't realize that it was a bit too tall to fit under the bed. The train (with the GoPro mounted on it) successfully made it all the way through the house, but when it reached the bedroom it ran smack in to the side of the bed. As luck would have it, the blow was cushioned by the soft comforter hanging over the side of the bed. The force of the collision was enough to separate the caboose from the rest of the train, and to dislodge the GoPro from the caboose... but you don't get to see any of that in the video because I thought the moment of impact with the comforter made for a perfect ending to the video, and I called it good at that point... before the camera actually fell off and hit the floor.

Enjoy might be too strong of a word. Tolerates is probably a more accurate one at this point in my history with model trains. She did enjoy them, especially at Christmas time, at first. Now that I am always trying to create the ultimate layout inside the house, she's less than enthusiastic about it... but it helps that we very specifically designed in to our new house a big craft room where she can do her thing for hours and hours on the days when I have model trains set up all throughout the rest of the house. (Which is only 2-4 days a month.) Also, it helps that her craft room has a bathroom, and that she can also close the door to her craft room to shut out any train noise if I have the train sound effects going. Our 40th wedding anniversary is coming up!

I definitely suggest that you DO NOT buy the passenger cars and caboose that I bought! The quality is really bad. The model # of the passenger cars is 89399 and the caboose 93804. I'd suggest you put those on your "do not buy" list! There has to be better matching rolling stock than this.

They have a really oddly designed system for the wheels that makes them squeal the entire time. You can hear the annoying noise in many parts of the video. It's 100% from the passenger cars and the caboose, not from the loco or tender... and it's not a matter of needing oil. In addition to that, they are just super-cheap looking up close.

The real Glenbrook train that this is modeled after was used to haul trees that had been cut down in the area near Lake Tahoe in Nevada. So, because it was working in the logging industry, wood was abundant and inexpensive. That's why they bought a locomotive that was powered by burning wood.

I love the new Bachmann 2-6-0 Glenbrook narrow gauge brown steam locomotive pulling three green pullsman passenger coaches #89399 with a red caboose #93804 at the end. That is my favorite G scale model steam locomotive of all time pulling a passenger train! I also like and love the Amtrak passenger train lead by a General Electric Dash 8-40CW diesel locomotive #500 from MTH Electric Trains, the two White Pass and Yukon Route Railway ALCO diesel locomotives #106 and #107 from LGB pulling the White Pass and Yukon Route Railway passenger train with a caboose at the end, the Christmas Coca Cola train #1 also from LGB and also with a caboose, Percy the Small #6 Green 0-4-0 Saddle Tank Engine with the two gray Troublesome Trucks, and Thomas the #1 Blue 0-6-0 E2 Tank Engine pulling Annie and Clarabel, the two orange female passenger coaches. Thomas and Percy are both equipped with DCC circuitry built in to them at the factory. And so does the Glenbrook narrow gauge brown steam locomotive. All three Bachmann steam locomotives are equipped with DCC circuitry built in to them. But James, Emily, Winston, Toby, and the Valvoline Train are powered by an analog control system. And so are Devious Diesel and Paxton The Young Diesel from Thomas and Friends. All eight steam locomotives and two diesel locomotives are manufactured by Bachmann. On the TV, the blue streamliner steam locomotive is Mallard, Spencer's brother. I also noticed the Santa Maria Valley agricultural boxcar sitting in the office of the house in Washington state. The SMV boxcar is from Onlytrains.com as well as the green White Pass and Yukon Route Railway tank car and the White Pass and Yukon Route Railway ALCO diesel locomotive #106 from LGB that provides proper realistic train sounds. This is Thomas Comeau signing off for today.

When are you, Jim Zim, going to get the G scale analog version of Devious Diesel from Bachmann's Thomas and Friends? I know you already have preordered him months ago, but when Bachmann will start distributing him, he will find his way to your house in Washington. Then you will make a video of Devious Diesel from Bachmann's Thomas and Friends to be added to your collection of G scale model trains. I do hope the video of Devious Diesel from Bachmann's Thomas and Friends will have a lot of views and will become popular. If the video of Devious Diesel from Bachmann's Thomas and Friends becomes popular and will have a lot of views, then you, Jim Zim, will soon get the G scale analog version of Paxton in 2022. But if the video of Devious Diesel from Bachmann's Thomas and Friends doesn't become popular and doesn't get a lot of views, then you will have to skip Paxton. As always, I am Thomas Comeau and I will see the replies from you, Jim Zim!

My first thought when I saw the TV showing the train video, that layout needs several short sidings in a row so the trains can pull in and watch. Like a drive-in movie. Great video and that new engine is just beautiful. Soooo, when the wife comes back, how long does it take to put everything away. Do you re-box everything or do you have storage shelves with track for the trains. Re-boxing would be a huge project, I have trains in O, HO and N. So I did not need to re-box when done with them. Great video. Keep em coming. About to get snowed in here in DFW. This kills time while I'm not working on my N gauge layout.
@JimZim
@JimZim 4 жыл бұрын
For the first few years I had model trains, I did put them back in to their boxes after use. But now I have a lot more trains, and thankfully I have a new house with more storage space. So, I built myself a train storage shelf thingie in my garage where I store all my trains now. You can see it in this video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/q4urnXywe9uoY6M I do store the track in the original boxes, as those are very convenient for storage. I have boxes and boxes of track on a different set of shelves, which aren't really visible in that video that shows the train storage shelf thingie. Regarding the wife... The title of the video was actually an inside joke. I explained it in the description of the video, but most people don't read the descriptions, I think! She was home the whole time. She has her own little hobby room where she hangs out for most of the day, which is convenient when I want to take over the house with model trains. People see my videos with trains running through the house and they often comment that I must either be single, divorced, or the wife is out of town. I find that funny since we are about to celebrate our 40th anniversary together, and she was the one that actually encouraged me to buy some G scale model trains in the first place. So, the title of the video, about the wife being away, was just a joke about how people assume that's the case when they see my videos. But she was there the whole time, in her craft room. I jokingly call it her wing of the house, because it's pretty big! You can see it in this video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/rnfahIB3p7djhpo It usually only takes about two hours to put everything away, once I'm done playing with the trains.

So Jim, you must have some knee's in very good condition for a man in his 60ies, cause with all the crawling around on the floor you are doing laying track has got get painful after a while. And how long does it take to do the entire house like that? And then you've got to take it back up at some point. But it is fun to watch!
@JimZim
@JimZim 4 жыл бұрын
It took almost all day for me to set up the layout you see in this video. Putting it all away is much easier, though! It only takes about two hours to put everything away. For this particular layout, I started setting it up after breakfast one day, and had it done and successfully running by that evening. The next day, I shot this video as well as the next video that you'll see on my channel. (I've learned that getting two videos out of the deal, each time I go to the trouble of setting up a layout, is a good efficient use of my time!) By about 5 PM, I started taking the layout down. So, the layout you see in this video literally only existed for something like 33 hours! You're absolutely right that dealing with a layout on the floor can be tricky and painful for a guy in his 60s! I'm actually quite fortunate in that I had a big health scare last year that forced me to have to take the drug Prednisone for about a year or so. I'm still taking the Prednisone, and that has the effect of eliminating all inflammation... so that makes it very easy right now for me to deal with all the bending and kneeling involved with a model train layout on the floor. Once I'm finished with my Prednisone treatments... sometime later this year... it's probably going to be a lot more difficult and painful! I may just have to get my young neighbor kid (who loves model trains) to come help me with the trains at that point!

Hello Glenbrook.
@PlowBenderStudios
@PlowBenderStudios 4 жыл бұрын
I see you got the matching passenger stock for the Glenbrook along with one of Bachmann's new 8 wheels cabooses. I still need to get the passenger stock for the Raton I bought last year. One thing that does have me concerned is that I noticed your model makes a screeching and grinding noise as it runs along. If you go back and watch the most recent video I did of my trains running around, you can hear my model does the same thing. Mine is still without DCC and sound, but yours has that addition and the unusual noise can still be heard over it. Hopefully that's not a sign of poor manufacturing because my model had issues straight out of the box.
@JimZim
@JimZim 4 жыл бұрын
Yeah, the sound is REALLY annoying. It's not coming from the locomotive or tender... it's from the passenger cars and the caboose. They have a horrible design of the wheels that makes a bad screeching sound the entire time they run. I totally regret buying those passenger cars and the caboose. The locomotive has got an annoying feature, too. The chuffing sound it makes is totally not synchronized with the movement of the locomotive. If you watch the beginning of the video again, you see the very first shot is the locomotive starting up from a stopped position. In editing the video, I had to take the sound from that scene and put it about five seconds behind real time... because in real life, the sound of the chuffing starts when the train is still not moving! The chuffing goes on for about five seconds before the train starts moving. It's really annoying! So, to make it not look stupid in the video, I just delayed the sound about five seconds in that opening scene. The bottom line is... I think LGB brand G-scale products are of much higher quality than Bachmann. Other than Thomas & Friends, the likelihood of me ever buying another Bachmann product is quite low.
@PlowBenderStudios
@PlowBenderStudios 4 жыл бұрын
@@JimZim I'm a little surprised at some of the issues you're having. I have 3 of the old Jackson Sharp coaches and I can honestly say I haven't had those issues. Occasionally I get models straight out of the box which squeak like crazy, but I use 3 in 1 oil which has always resolved the problem. What's more is Bachmann did update the models back in 2016 with new track powered lighting and metal handrails, so I would have thought that'd be an improvement. As for the caboose, I can completely understand your frustration there. I did a review on one last year and I was not impressed with the build quality. Handrails were either loose, not fitted properly, or bent. Opening up the model was just as bad because someone apparently got happy with the super glue. Can honestly say I've seen and have come to expect better quality from Bachmann than that. On the topic of the loco though, I personally feel the sound not being synchronized goes back more to the individual who installed the sound system rather than the manufacture. This should have been working correctly before the model was shipped, so you may want to refer back to the retailer who did the instillation. I do know there are ways to adjust the timing of the chuffs on the model, but to what extent I'm not sure. The 2 cylinders have chuff adjusters in them which you can access by pulling the front covers off. I really can't tell you much more than that as I have yet to play around with this on my models as well. One thing I will mention is that SoundTraxx makes sound modules for these locos, so I'm curious if that is what was installed in this model or something else. Personally I feel like the problems you have can be easily rectified and I wouldn't throw in the towel on Bachmann products. A majority of my collection is Bachmann with a little bit of LGB, Aristo-Craft, and Lionel in the mix and I've seen issues from all three. Granted you'll have that with any manufacture at least once, but in most cases their customer service is happy to put things right. Keep in mind though that these are just my thoughts based off my research and past 10 years of G scale model railroading experience, so I'm in no way saying that my opinion is right.

Hey Jim, what turns are you mostly using with that new steam engine, do you use more of the LGB R2 or mostly R3 turns ,
@JimZim
@JimZim 3 жыл бұрын
I mostly run it outside now, and there's a LOT of room... so I tend to use R3 curves the most. If space is tight, I go down to R2.

Do you have any live steam engines? I personally have sean some live G scale steam engines at my school when I was going to college at NMSU Dona Ana. I had a faculty member that had a couple of live steam locomotive in his office. he had the 7.25" gauge locomotive and the G scale live steam locomotive. This faculty told me that they are both powerful enough that you can actually ride them.
@JimZim
@JimZim 4 жыл бұрын
Live steam locomotives are REALLY expensive! So, I use electric powered locomotives that get their power through the rails.

Is everything battery powered? I'm not seeing any wires or power packs to power up the tracks and engines.
@JimZim
@JimZim 4 жыл бұрын
You must not have looked very carefully! There are three different power supplies running the four loops of this layout, and the wires are really not hidden at all. Look at the 0:26 point, at the 1:33 point, and at the 3:55 point and you can see all three power supplies and how they connect to the tracks.

Jim Where Did You Get That G Gauge 4-4-0 American Type At 0:00, Do You Own It Or Did Somebody Else Let You Borrow It?
@JimZim
@JimZim 3 жыл бұрын
I got it from www.reindeerpass.com/ Normally I buy all my model trains from Trainworld.com but in this case I needed to buy it from somewhere that would install a DCC decoder and sound card before shipping it to me. I don't like to mess with the installation of things like that... so, I wanted to find a train shop that would do it for me. Thus, Reindeer Pass. Really, I prefer to buy brands like MTH or LGB or Piko that have the DCC decoder and sound card built in at the factory. I normally wouldn't buy a Bachmann or USA Train because of that issue. But this train really appealed to me, so I decided to see how it would work out having the decoder and sound card installed by a train shop.

Bachmann is releasing Diesel and Paxton this year
@JimZim
@JimZim 4 жыл бұрын
Not exactly. Bachmann announces new products way in advance of when they actually put them out there for sale. Diesel was announced in their 2020 catalog and is still not actually for sale yet! Paxton was just announced in the new 2021 catalog... so I think it's probably a safe bet that it will be about a year from now before Paxton will actually be available for sale. I put in a pre-order on Diesel quite a long time ago... so, when they do finally release the product, one should be arriving here at my house.

Overpriced, in my opinion. For what I paid for the locomotive and tender, plus the cost of the DCC add-on board and the cost of having someone install it for me... this was basically the same price as a nice LGB locomotive, but with nowhere near the quality. My biggest complaint about the locomotive, besides being overpriced, is that the sound of the chuffing isn't even close to being synchronized with the motion of the wheels. When I tell the locomotive to go, the chuffing sound starts almost immediately but the train doesn't actually start moving for at least five seconds. In the opening scene of my video, where I start the train from a stopped position, I had to use a little video editing trick to make it sound like the chuffing was synched with the movement of the train... but in real life, it wasn't even close. The passenger cars and caboose are absolute crap... the worst ones in my entire collection. The way Bachmann designed the wheel assemblies creates a very annoying squealing sound, which you can hear in several points of the video. It is not a matter of needing lubrication... it was just a poorly designed wheel unit. I am unlikely to buy any other Bachmann products except for Thomas & Friends, since they're the only ones that make them in G scale.

The steam locomotive in this video is the model of the Glenbrook 2-6-0 Mogul steam locomotive that is made by Bachmann and it is based on the real life full scale narrow gauge Baldwin steam locomotive that used to run on the Nevada and California sides of Lake Tahoe! The real life full scale narrow gauge steam locomotive that the model was based on was built in 1875 and for about 15 years it was built in service, it was used to haul lumber from the sawmills of Glenbrook to Spooners Summit. Later in life, it was used to haul passengers from Truckee to Tahoe City until 1926. Then it sat around and was unused for years after that. Until it was finally being donated to the Nevada State Railroad Museum in Carson City, Nevada. They took a lot of money and effort into restoring it. A project in which was completed in 2015. And is still running at the Nevada State Railroad Museum in Carson City, Nevada to this day!
