This is a great analysis of Jin Roh that does not hyperfocus on the film itself, ignoring the surrounding politics of the time. I find it baffling how many reviewers of Jin Roh are either ignorant or downplays the influence that the political climate had on the movie, especially considering (as you mentioned in your review) Mamoru Oshii's political views as well as him having partaken in the protests.

I may need to do my own analysis of this movie in a podcast. In addition to the on-the-sleeve POLITICAL and SYMBOLIC metaphors, there is a also an understated romance that hinges on feelings come into being during a ruse. She is NOT the sister of terrorist that died. She is a plant. He KNOWS she is a plant. He also KNOWS she is pretending to have feelings for him in order to lure him into a trap. And yet...and yet... Then there's the fact that the "Wolf Brigade" is a secret organization inside of a secret organization (rumored to not even exist). So she is a terrorist, unrelated to a terrorist, who is a plant, by an organization that doesn't exist, that is a manipulating a secret organization within the police to negotiate for power with the OTHER special police forces (confused yet????). The point may be that who they are working for ultimately doesn't matter. She was following orders as a terrorist. So where is her loyalty to THAT organization? Well she was found out and used as a tool by a new organization. Does it really matter WHICH organization? And what about him? The Special Forces have almost totally lost faith in him. But wait, he's the Wolf Brigade's golden boy/bargaining chip/bait? So is he important or unimportant? That doesn't matter either. When the terrorist died in the beginning was she a plant too? And was he instructed to let her detonate? Or was he genuinely having mixed feelings about shooting a beautiful young woman point blank? Really the point ultimately apart from fascism might be the connections we make as introverted lonely people in an alienating world, life imitating art imitating life, and the fight against destiny. Some of these points are getter explored in the anime Princess Tutu, where the real question is not just "what is your destiny?" but "is it worth the sacrifice to fight your destiny?" I would also like to point out that this movie has some of the best music in movie history, is an alternate history of Japan, and has an absolutely fantastic English dub. There's so much emotion in the understated acting that it's absolutely mind-blowing.

Japan has come along way, they still have social ills its not perfect but its a sight better than many other nations. The movies one hell of a trip, your video has helped me understand it a bit more than I did before. I do feel the word fascist is thrown around way to much tho, the go to word for anyone on the left to call someone on the right when Totalitarianism is a more accurate of a term,and it actually applies to all forms of government be it Communist,Republic what ever they all have the ability.to be the same. Little context on the assassination of Inejirō Asanuma (read: not a defense of murder, an explanation): Asanuma had visited Maoist China previously and was beginning to praise the model. To ultranationalists, this was beyond acceptable. I don't think killing him was good, but he was certainly not a saint and frankly should have been voted or censured out.

I don’t agree with the anti-fascist stuff. I do think the movie is portraying authoritarian governments (or at least the governments perceived as authoritarian), particularly the one of Japan, not strictly fascist ones. It’s a well known fact several key players of the film were against the Japanese government (can’t blame them), and so in a way to comment on it without outright name calling, they set the story up using common authoritarian iconography. It’s obvious this is the case, because in the opening it indirectly states Japan (and by proxy the American… I mean German occupiers) is a democracy. TLDR, yes it’s anti fascist, but first and foremost anti establishment, and thus anti american.

I rewatched this again after a year and at first, I didn't catch onto this before, I realized with all the political talk and the conclusion of the video being how some give up the fight because it's easier to integrate into a fascist like government, I am reminded oddly of Superman and one of the things he inspires. That being to never give up the fight against wrong doings even if the fight is an endless one filled with battle after battle. Jin-Roh feels like it's giving us a look into what happens when we don't have that kind of inspiration and instead of being treated as men, we are instead forced to become beasts, Beasts with the illusion of choice

Thank you for this video. Firstly: you actually addressed the film being "boring"? Really? "Boring" is what people who expect to be entertaind say, consumers expecting the satisfaction from the goods they purchased. Jin-Roh I list with Stalker or 2001, a symbolic and surreal excursion into the depths of the human psyche. "Boring"! Hah! Secondly: as obvious fascism is here, I didn't see that as the main theme. For me it was duty and hierarchy. There are many ways to dehumanise a society or an individual, but perhaps specificly relevant to Japan and the East is to do it by calling upon duty. Simply the idea of duty is taken to such an extreem in modern Japan also and was even wilder in the past. This is a film where a man kills a man he might consider a friend and a woman he might actually loves, all in the name of duty. Is that not the virtue of a samurai? Truly what is the meaning of good if man declines to champion his own vision of good? If he finds others to be the final arbiters of morality and he himself but does as is his duty, does he know morality at all? Brilliant film, and thank you again for all the context.

27:47 Saying that, I realised that the reason why Japanese people consider talking about social issues a taboo is likely because they've found it easier to just live under the governments terms. They've tried fighting what was deemed to be unjust before, and it only brought them pain, didn't do them much favours. And thus they eventually realised it was easier to just put their weapons down and just live under the government's terms, even if it's at the cost of allowing many people to suffer in silence. Japanese people considering talking about social issues as a taboo has become a result of becoming so conditioned into living under the government's terms. They've become so used to and subdued in how easy it is to just remain silent, as nobody gets hurt. That, combined with the Asian conservative outlook in general. It's a philosphical dillema though, choosing to fight for a just cause and choosing to simply not resist. It's justifiable to take up the path of resistance and fight (though probably not necessarily through an armed struggle and anarchy). People have a sense of justice that cannot be put to rest. But it's also justifiable to just not resist. Yes, it's at the cost of people suffering in silence, but it's not really completely selfish to want to live an easier life. Life can already be so hard, so why make it even harder? Which one of these two a person chooses depends on their values, moral compass, and outlook.
