Very good review. I have the transparent version and like it quite a bit. I absolutely agree with your suggestion for a Japanese Eyedropper version. For this pen's shape and size, that would be the ultimate filling system.

@j.b.5291 you could barrel fill it using a liberal amount of silicone grease, but the metal finish on threads will eventually breakdown. But no simple way to add a shutoff valve that I know of.

Thank you for this clear, helpful review. I have an EF clear demonstrator 9019 and I love it. So smooth and comfortable in my hand, with perfect ink flow with no tweaking needed. (You were right about the quality control nib inking by the manufacturer; when I did my usual pre-wash, a little blue ink came off.) I’ve loaded it with Platinum Carbon Black ink, something I would never do with a more expensive pen. I use this pen for both writing and drawing. I plan to get a couple more for other inks and nib sizes. I LOVE the massively oversized new converter. It basically makes this pen a piston filler. (A KZbinr measured the capacity by weight and it was about 1.3 ml, more than any other converter.) I disagree about preferring making it into an eyedropper-type filler. That much ink would be heavy and the ink might not be in good shape by the time it finally was mostly used. This huge, gorgeous converter, held securely in the pen and screwing into the section, is all I need. I look forward to seeing this newly designed converter introduced in future Jinhao pens. It’s a great answer to the universal wish for greater ink capacity. Also, an oversized converter should be easier to maintain than a piston-filler: just get another converter if issues arise. I highly recommend this pen unless you have small hands. I didn’t expect it to be so comfortable but it’s been addictive. (My hands are not big in width but I have long fingers.) I hope a compatible #8 EF flex nib becomes available. Wouldn’t that be fun?
@ForTheLoveOfPens Жыл бұрын
Thank you, I’m glad you found it useful! I really appreciate the larger converter, but was a bit disappointed it isn’t easy to disassemble. I hope Jinhao continues to use them so they become more commonplace if you do need to get a new one. The eyedropper suggestion was something similar to the Opus 88, which still has a shutoff valve to control ink flow…But you have a good point, if you use ink with shimmer it may become very difficult to work with. Also I agree, a flex #8 would be quite something!

@@ForTheLoveOfPens : I went back to the video where the ink volume of the converter was reported and found I had misremembered. It’s at least 1.6 ml! kzbin.info/www/bejne/mJuufJ-getGcf8k

Great pen, I love using it and I agree with the quality of the nib and the obvious upgrade to their QC. About body-filling, I have not tried, but the issue here is not the metal threads of the body screw, but the thin plastic of the body, I'm certain my hand will heat up the air way too quickly and the pen will keep sneezing ink while writing. As for the size, it's almost a perfect match to the Namiki Yukari Royal, the Emperor is way way thicker....
@ForTheLoveOfPens Жыл бұрын
I haven’t seen the Yukari Royale before, but from googling it I have to agree. Thanks! With regards to eyedropper filling, the finish on the threads will wear down over time if submerged in ink, and you are right about the pen likely burping from the heat in your hands. That’s why I suggested a Japanese eyedropper style, which uses a shutoff valve to help regulate ink flow.

X159 itself was a little too big for my hands, so I didn’t bother re-inking it.. But I’ll still buy this one - the gorgeous demonstrator model - just to add to my collection !

Nice review. I've got the black/gold version in M nib. Lookig to get the transparent in EF based on your review. Good tip: I've started to fill all my converter pens with a syringe so the small neck size on the Diamine 30ml bottles is never a problem. Also, no issues with not drawing up enough ink.

It is a great pen but I had a problem with the nib and feed drying quickly. I think it may the ink but I am not sure. I also like the lengthened turning knob on the converter. It fits into the end of the barrel which holds it in place. No rattling. This is a well thought out design. The quality is excellent.

Ink and paper can definitely make a difference. I would use an ink you are familiar with that has good flow on most pens. I’m also starting to plan a “nib tuning 101” to help troubleshoot issues.

Regarding the pen not writing well, I had the same problem. I realized that it was because the nib and feed were not aligned properly. I just removed the nib and feed unit, and aligned them. Once I did that, the pen wrote beautifully. Mine is the clear demonstrator and it is beautiful.

@janisstewart2217 Жыл бұрын

I didn't see the square on the feed and collar. I did exchange nibs with the X159 as I was not happy with the original nib (needs smoothing). I wonder if that would affect the dryness. In any case did you notice the X159 nibs are marked X159 on the bottom?
@ForTheLoveOfPens Жыл бұрын
I did see that, and some people have 9019s with nibs that say X159. There’s a slight chance that not having the squares in line will prevent the nib and feed from being fully seated, which would reduce ink flow. I’m also planning a little “nib tuning 101” video to help people troubleshoot issues.

Mine required quite a bit of fine tuning the nib and the feed. The nib is a stiff nail despite its larger #8 size. The plastic feels like... cheap plastic, unlike those better quality, thicker plastics with a tad of resilience and plasticity to prevent sudden cracking once you accidentaly drop it... but you get what you pay, so you have to manage the expectation here. Despite the cartridge being a screw type, with motion, it hits the barrel producing a rattling sound. As a writing experience, it takes a while to get used to it because of its larger girth, it feels like writing with a child's big, fat crayon.
@ForTheLoveOfPens Жыл бұрын
I’m sorry you experienced so many issues with the nib. At this price, QC can certainly be a factor. I agree that it doesn’t feel extremely solid and the grip takes some getting used to. But I think a lot of this comes with the price and the oversized design.

Mine is a little stiff but not overly so. I haven’t used the clip much because the pen is too thick to fit through the loop on my notebook. I haven’t noticed cracking either. I suppose if you are nervous about this you could try to loosen the bolt that holds it in place.
