Jinn Possession: Is It Real? | Dr. Shabir Ally

Do jinns actually exist, or are they folklore? Dr. Shabir Ally says that from the Quranic perspective, jinns do exist, but the Quran is silent about whether they can possess people. Dr. Shabir says that it's hard to imagine that God would have given jinns power to overcome human beings. Human beings have a responsibility before God for their actions. If they can claim that a jinn possessed them when doing wrong, no one would be able to disprove that claim. He says that the most commonly cited hadith on jinn possession is not in a major collection and cannot be used with authority. In conclusion, there's nothing in the Quran or in the life of the Prophet Muhammad that is authentic that leads us to believe that jinns possess people. Finally, Dr. Shabir explains what he would do if someone came to him and asked for help believing that they were possessed by a jinn.

I am with Dr. Shabir in this. The concept of Jinn possession can lead us away from real issues. I witnessed depressed teenager who finally committed suicide because the parents only brought him to local imam for exorcism (rukya) instead of professional help (psychiatrist). Long time a go two boys died because food poisoning and the parents refused our help (who know the symptomp) and trust a rukya practicioner. If there was such things as Jinn's possession, apparently it is not worthy of serious discussion in Qur'an or canonical hadith books, so we should not put too much care or use it as basis for our decision making as muslim.

Not even Iblis (name of Satan in the Quran) has the ability to possess people, he can only “whisper” into our hearts and minds evil suggestions, he can’t physically harm us or possess us for that matter. It’s even there in the Quran that he can only tempt us with evil thoughts and that’s it. I'm not convinced of Jinn possesion. It would take away from the idea of free will and everyone could claim they were Jinn possesed when commiting sins. Also the Qur'aan describes the Jinn as being part of the 'al-ghaib', so the human senses cannot percieve them.

Abu Dawood 4403, Jinn possession is real I've seen it on my own (yet as a kid) and idk why ppl doubt it. And usually human's diseases are from Jinns, btw when Jinn controls the human's body, if you hit the body with all your strength, the body will not have any bruises and when the person wakes up he doesn't feel pain at all, EXCEPT if you were hitting that person and not the Jinn, what I'm saying is that you must be certain to hitting the Jinn (who's inside person's body at that time)

The Quran is very clear about who the Jinn are and why they are here. They are beings of smokeless fire in another dimension created with certain attributes distinct from human beings. They're purpose is to also submit and worship the Creator and unlike angels or animals they are creatures that have free will like humans, which necessarily means that there will be good and evil ones and everything in between. Iblees was a Jinn and that's made very clear. Ideas about them being this and that or confusion about them come from people who haven't read or pondered on the verses speaking about them in the Quran.

I continue to reflect the the opening ayahs of Al Baqurah which characterize Believers as "...fear Allah, believe in the unseen, are steadfast in prayer,..." etc., etc. Perhaps it must seem fanciful to personify dark forces into conscious entities, and there are many who Express doubt about Shaytain and his minions as well. All cultures around the world acknowledge "things that go bump in the night". It is a blessing that we have Allah and His Angel's with which to bump back.

Only for some of the people reappearing days later, naked on the grasslands 1000s of kilometres away. *Well, all Jinn, fairies, UFOs and others love to live in the Mountains, Caves, Forests and Waters.* *Bizarre Coincidence?* There's tradition in fairy faith that people taken by the fairies into their world can be missing for years if not decades only for them, after appearing and telling their stories thought it past minutes or hours. Same thing is experienced in 'alien' abductions. Same thing a man abducted by Jinn in Khurafah Hadith said that he spent only hours or days in the atheist Jinn city called Akhbar (the city name I hardly remember) *While he was actually absent for 4 YEARS.* So you connect the dots. Scientists have made a calculation that, higher dimensional beings (if they exist), could pass through walls and see what's inside of the 3D box without opening it. Higher dimensional beings can see through 3D humans and do surgeries on them with no incisions and could enter into the people. These beings could potentially disappear in thin air and make themselves visible which means, they couldn't be seen by us unless they decide to show themselves. Invisible because we cannot move nor see in extra directions. The same characteristics are observed in alien abduction cases and Jinn encounters. When they were summoning Jinns in Arabia during 90s, *LIGHT UFO LIKE BALLS APPEARED IN THE HOUSE.* Food for thought.

"Mediums" communicate with other entities, which does not require possession. The means of communication might seem to be very alien to us however possession is a specific thing, the metaphysical overtaking of a physical beings physical body. For humans, who have souls, this would require the jinn, who also have souls, to have the power to displace our souls with their own in our physical bodies. This is not reasonable for many reasons. As is told to us within the Quran, our souls are unique as well as solely belonging to Allah SWT. Which is why the idea of "selling a soul to the devil" or possession is silly. We cant just give away something that isnt ours to ultimately give. We can let other things have power over our actions but that is it. On top of that, nowhere does it say Jinn are disembodied souls that exist. They are unseen beings made of some sort of something that is best described as smokeless fire. They sound hyperdimensional in the way they are described, possessing powers that would still be attributable to our universes laws of physics, ie, flying but only to where Allah SWT has allowed them. These are just two of multiple points against the idea of possession.

Legitimate shamanic practitioners are a real thing even in Islam. “Shamanism and Islam” is an amazing anthropological study into the cultures of the steppe and Asia whose shamanic practices were melded with Islam upon the latter’s spread into the area. There is a place for energy practitioners and shamanic practices within Islam to an extent, however with the understanding of where any healing comes from. I'm just an ordinary Muslim and I'd like to place my opinion from what I've learnt about Jinns and their powers First of all I don't think a Jinn possess someone as you think it controls all of your limbs and what not. I think a Jinn has the power to whisper, he is so focused and consistent with it that the person he targets thinks it is his idea, it is his problem, he is the one to be blamed, he did it all. These are actually army of the Iblees and can be termed as Saitan. They slowly take control over you by whispering to your ear by making you do simple things and at one point you'll feel you can't even control your own brain! This is the pattern of addicted people also. He commands you to do shameful acts and act abnormal further make you go crazy psychologically. Now many people call it Jinn possession while many call it psychological problem. I'd not reject any but affirm both, it is a devil jinn Making the person go crazy many of the times. Black magic works the same way. Using devil Jinns to give ideas to Human and Humans feel it is their idea! So the whisper is the Jinn possession itself if a particular entity whispers you all the time! But no one can tell if it's always a particular jinn whispering to a person. We can only think it may be the case and then act according. Trying everything out is what I mean! The best treatment to such a problem if caused by entities is to return to the path of God and slowly take control of your brain! Many times it's just psychological problem from genes and whatnot! DR.Shabir the jinn exist and can possess a person. I witnessed a case of ruqyah, it was a person who was a victim of sihr. the jinn can possess a person without a doubt. There are mental and physical illnesses, but there are also spiritual illnesses. And in Islam most scholars agree that this is possible. Shaykh al Islam Ibn Taymiyah (may Allaah have mercy on him) said: “The fact that a jinn can enter a person's body is accepted by the consensus of the Imams of the People of the Prophetic Tradition and the Community (ahl sunnah wal yáma'ah). allah says: "Those who live by usury will be on Judgment Day like the one whom Satan has possessed, leaving him deranged." And in a Saheeh hadeeth it is narrated from the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) that “shaytan flows through the sons of Adam like blood”. And the shaytan is jinn, not angel obviously. Conclusion: the jinn can possess the human being.

Hadith - Sahih Muslim 6757, Narrated Abdullah ibn Mas'ud, similar narration 6759 by 'Aisha, r.a. Allah's Apostle May Allah's peace and blessings be on him said: There is none amongst you with whom is not an attache from amongst the jinn (devil). They (the Companions) said: Allah's Apostle May Allah's peace and blessings be on him with you too? Thereupon he said: Yes, but Allah helps me against him and so I am safe from his hand and he does not command me but for good.

The words Jins attacks should replace the words Jins possession. Jins does not live inside the body of their victims as thought by people, they operate within the intervisible vicinity of their victims. I would hazard a guess that the vast majority of these so-called Jinn possessions are more likely to be of an individual suffering from a psychiatric disorder. Either way, the only true protection we have comes from the one true God and we should continue to constantly give Him thanks for all that He has given us and to pray for His continued protection, from all that would harm us.

Possession does not exist brother. Until today there is absolutely no proof that a jin can enter a human body. A simple travel in the world will show that some societies are free of that phenomenon, like nordic people. Otherwise we should conclude that jin only "attack" muslims, Jews and Christian's but then the obvious conclusion is that we made it ourselves.

It's important to note that Satan/Jinns do work on whispering to people, enable to bring them away from Allah swt. Some people can be so affected that they lose sleep - the whispers allow them to see things (that arent there) and stay awake at night. So to only suggest its psychiatric and push on it solely is dangerous, because whispers , 3ein and Sihr is real, so Ruqya should be done (recited by one self), and ruqya is not a one time thing, it should be done till the person is seeing progress! A friend had no sleep for many years, and increased anxiety, and went to plenty psycologists. Nothing helped. The last resort was going to a imam, and she started ruqya (self ruqya) and she saw changes for the first time in 20 years, surely but slowly. She has been struggling for more than 20 years. So please be aware, that in many cases it is whispers, 3ein or sihr.

There's not a scholar today I respect and admire more than Dr. Ally, but on this particular subject, Dr. Ally needs to do further research. Jinns and Jinn possession is very real. It is an undeniable fact. I just wish I could email this beautiful team my take on this but I'll just leave a couple of random points: 1. When shaitan (satan) vowed to mislead the human creation, and Allah responded by assuring the devil he would not mislead the true servants of Allah- this was not referring to Jinn possession. The satan will mislead the people true his evil devices like music, alcohol, gambling etc. It is these tools that the satan uses to remove people from the worship of Allah not possession. 2. Jinn possession does not lead to sinning. The Jinns does not possess a person and all of a sudden they go and commit murder. 3. A true believer can be possessed by Jinns and not be mislead. A clear evidence of this is the fact that our Prophet once upon a time became a victim of sihr (black magic). And it is known that the saahir (magician) works with the Jinns to achieve this. 4. Not only do Jinns possess people, but sometimes it is Allah who allowed them to possess a person or a group of people. The evidence for this is in Suratul- Mariam the 83rd verse: "Do you not see that We have sent the devils upon the disbelievers, inciting them [to evil] with [constant] incitement? ". 5. Most importantly, Possession does not necessarily lead to fainting or vomiting, or convulsing. A huge part of jinn possession is subtle since the jinns know if they make it apparent to you, you might go and seek a cure. A person can be possessed by Jinns and appear normal but not as normal. There are signs. I have and I am currently a victim of Jinn possession and so I can write a book if I wanted. The possession can take different forms: a). A jinn/jinns might possess a person to give them a weird personality. It can alter your facial expression when you are speaking with people or a person. So that, when you mean well, the face doesn't show it. When you meant it to be funny, the person takes it seriously. b). Another form of possession is that, you can laugh at very inappropriate times. So a tragedy can happen, when everyone is sad, a laughter can just choke you and sometimes you might burst laughing. Just like that. c). etc 6. On the issue of Jinns possessing the good people that worships regularly and not those in the club [part 2]. The jinns did attack Prophet Ayyub (Job) and he lost everything. The evidence- Surah Sa'ad verse 41: "And remember Our servant Job, when he called to his Lord, "Indeed, Satan has touched me with hardship and torment." " And this man was not only a believer, but a Prophet of Allah. 7. Jinn possession can lead to physical illness that can be treated with antibiotics. This does not necessarily proves the absence of jinns. When you go the professionals who treat Jinn possession, they'll be the first to tell you, go to the hospital. Because they know, if it is indeed jinn possession, no matter how many doctors you visit, no matter how many treatment you take, the same problem will keep recurring. 8. Finally, jinn possession like every other danger cannot harm us except by Allah's permission. And just like the way Allah allows certain harm to touch us as a way to test us, Allah allows some form of jinn possession to affect us. So with all due respect, to say Jinn possession is not real, is to not take a deeper look at the available evidence.

Unseen is right. Jinn, comes from the stem janna, meaning hidden. Thus the Paradise is Jannah, because it has leaves hiding (covering) what is beneath. Mentally ill people are called "Majaneen", because the real-life is hidden from them, or because we cannot see in them. So from the qoranic perspective, the Jinn are creatures we do not know about or cannot sense with our physical awareness.

If a woman has the right to work according to islam, how is it that the husband has a right to stop her from working? And also if Allah has commanded us to be dutiful to our parents, how is it that the husband has a right to stop his wife from seeing or doing things for her parents? Cause someone told me about a hadith that says a woman can not go to see her parents even if they are on their death bed unless she gets the permission of her husband. What about parents who have only daughters and are old and in need of care and support? Should the daughters just abandon them because their husbands say so?

But when it comes to issues of Aqeeda, Fiq, Science of Hadithes, Imaan and many other important concepts in Islam I think we as Muslim should try to go back to Aslaf as these issues were there in their time and they have explained everything needed explaining. unfortunately i have been seeing the western islamic scholarship moving away from fundamental islamic teaching just because as you have mentioned in your reply. indeed todays morality and issues will defer from the coming decade would that mean we should change our religion to meet people's or society's thinking and wishes. Dr.shabbir missed the hadeeth of Sunan Abu Daud where it says prophet s.a.w cured a boy who was possessed by a jinn by saying come out oh enemy of Allah. He mentioned Abu yala's hadeeth whose isnad I don't know but what about Sunan Abu Daud? Yes agreed this wasn't common so there is not much in other sahi hadeeth but this hadeeth from Abu Daud should also be discussed and this fact should also be kept in mind that although it's a dispute about jinn possessing someone but there is no dispute that black magic is used on humans and may be these bad jinns help the black magicians do their job .
