They cannot expect people in Korean to speak English. They went there. They should be prepared for there to be a language barrier if the country’s first language is not English. I think it’s rude to go to a country and complain that people don’t speak English.

Lived in Daegu for years. Going back in about a year or so to Seoul. Love Korea even though there are a few....things I don't really like all that much. But overall I love the country. #1 for me is definitely, learn the language! My Korean has definitely suffered in the last couple of years but I'm learning again. Thank goodness I can still read Hangul. Shout out to King Sejong for coming up with a very simple and amazing written language.

For me the first impression was about its heavy and humid weather. I came from Tehran, whose elevation is around 1200 meter above sea level. I came with aero float. My connection flight came from Moscow. So when I took off from airplane in incheon airport, this heavy humid weather hit my face. I was feeling like I’m floating in water. And I could make out this smell of ocean as well. That was my very first impression of Korea.

@@ToadFart English is the most widely spoken language. BUT it is completely wrong to think that every person should speak English at a basic level because the language is widely used across the world. Korea has its own language, so foreigners who visit Korea can easily guess that not every Korean can speak English. If you as a foreigner want to have no communication issues in Korea, learn some basic Korean before coming.

Before moving to South Korea, there was this mindset that it's similar to North Korea based on the news I've been hearing. It was a culture shock. I was surprised that it's more technologically advanced than the U.S. and everything here is so convenient. Public transportation is awesome for someone who didn't have a car upon arrival. First impression of the people (men here in particular) are rude and less helpful. I was struggling with my 2 huge luggage trying to open a door to my hotel, man behind me just rushed to the door opened and slammed it to my face (by accident). If it was in the U.S., someone would have helped me easily, even just holding the door for me. To this day, I still see the same attitude from the men young/old. Most Korean women are a lot nicer and more thoughful. As the time passes, I noticed some Koreans treat me like a low class citizen. Is it because I'm South East Asian? I noticed my spouse who's white is treated better. I've had a couple of Korean friends who would stop friending me as soon as I introduced them to other foreigners (black/white/hispanics). I don't understand? Don't get me wrong there are still good people. I agree with the Germans that the beauty standard is set to high that there's this pressure to always look good. Just like any other countries there are negative and positive. Always focus on the bright side. I love Korea and I'll keep coming back (but please you need to question the intentions of your government especially during this Covid-19 situation, getting the virus you have 99.9% survival rate and we're still wearing mask indoors)!

Not sure why Koreans should be expected to take on western values like pornography , sexuality, etc etc Korean has a long vibrant culture and civilization much longer than much of the western countries, so why should it become westernized? Might as well stay home if you want Korea to be like the west.Stay with your own values and culture Korea the west is in decline!! Korea you are a vibrant part of Asia. Other Asian countries look up to you, your fashions etc Korea is the Paris of Asia, why try to be like the west.
