Hey guys, this is a new style of Short that focuses on the travel component of exploring what it takes to live a more fulfilling life. I believe that most people don’t know enough about other cultures and by asking foreigners about their home countries, we can really open our eyes up to new places and inspire ourselves to visit areas we never thought we’d go to. Anyways, hope you enjoy it and let me know about any countries I should do next👇🏻

I live in korea and as a foreigner here i want to answer your questions 🤓 Life in Korea is very comfortable. Everything has easy access even if you don’t speak the language you can get around pretty easily. But at the same time it can be very lonely because out of seoul there aren’t many foreigners. About the PDA like she said there are no rules about it some people like to do it some people don’t. But you can see it on the street pretty often. Some misconception about south korea would be that people think life here is like living inside a kdrama 😅. Something normal in Korea and not normal in my country (Chile) would be how safe Korea is, I feel safe walking alone at night on the street or going to a bar with a friend, i can leave my bag unattended and nobody would take it. That for me is priceless. There are many things i don’t understand about korea because it isn’t my own culture, it isn’t a perfect place, but i respect their country and i appreciate the wonderful things they have done. 😊

It's sort of cultural thing. People in Korea learn not to stand out and expect to follow rules. If you smile all the time and too out going you will stand out and for some reason lot of Korean have fear of catching other people's attention. But they're also very detail oriented if they mean to help they will go extra mile to help when they're put in the position. Of course I can't generalize whole Korean and there are exceptions.

We smile a lot over here in Canada too. Never thought I would see a day where smiling is looked at as weird, maybe other countries just have miserable people
@JoeMac1983 Жыл бұрын
@@tkn9979 I think it's definitely got deep cultural roots. Our countries have been carved out of the wilderness over the last 4 hundred years, and being friendly to and embracing your neighbors was essential for survival -- even if you didn't personally like them. We have lots of freedom of movement as well and have enjoyed a relatively high degree of personal liberty and freedom. Countries like Germany have had centuries of despotic rulers, limited movement, and no guaranteed freedoms. The oldest generation that is fading away now went through over a decade of Nazi rule where you couldn't trust your neighbor or even your own family members or children. Staying reserved was a survival tactic and this mentality was passed down for sure. Any communist country (or former communist country) will be the same. I think that our two countries are going to see less smiling going forward with the deep political distrust between radical leftists who seek to cancel people and destroy people's livelihoods, and also between the pro-lockdown/masking/vaxx crowd and those who simply want the freedom to choose. I know that at this point I have no desire to interact with anyone anymore. Families have been shattered over this stuff. My neighbors haven't talked to their children or seen their grandchildren in over two years because of this stuff. There's a major undertone of anger in society right now and everyone is at the end of their rope.

I can see that. I hypothesize that in a lot of large cities, the pace of life is more frenetic, so people are more concerned with getting their individual agendas done as efficiently as possible, so something like smiling would be too trivial. But then, that not-smiling thing kinda morphed into an established custom. Just wondering, was your experiences in the parts of Korea outside Seoul different? I would like to know what led to your claim that people not smiling at random strangers is more of a city thing not Korean thing.

@@thaothelazycat930 I do travel a lot and some rural areas in Korea they do smile in my personal experiences (when I was asking directions or local culture/ food) And then I traveled and lived in multiple cities, name almost any famous West European cities(Paris, Rome, Berlin, Frankfurt, Brussels, London &) and Eastern and Western parts of the US(NYC, Boston, LA, Portland, San Diego, SF &) they do not smile to random people, even when I was smiling and asking some questions out of curiosities, directions or buying something. The safety as a single woman walking at night initially was kind of creepy. If anything people would make sure I wasn’t lost and needed directions. It took a few days to get used to it. Also, the fact that you can put things down and walk away and no one touches your stuff. In a restaurant and need to go to the restroom? Just leave your bag and laptop on the table, no one will touch it. I even left something on a table at a cafe, realized it an hour later, went back and it was still in the same spot just waiting for me to retrieve it. I’m an introvert so the not smiling was fine with me.😂 I seriously miss the safety. I’m American.

I stayed in an apartment so that I could experience local neighborhood life and actually met nice people of all ages. The cultural experiences were amazing! @@pandaemily7763 Also everything isn’t all roses. There is a significant homeless population near Seoul Station in an area and honestly is reeked of urine smell. It’s an issue every city has, but the people themselves weren’t confrontational or combative. Also there are very few public trash cans in the streets so discard of trash inside restaurants, stores, your hotel or lodging. Recycling is serious so be sure to recycle properly by placing items in the correct bins and use the correct trash bags for food waste disposal on the designated day for the area you are in if using AirBnB. It isn’t hard to do! If going with family you will be fine but still keep an eye out for the religious cult that likes to recruit people near subway stations. When they ask to meet with you at a cafe, etc., just say no and keep walking.😂 Also don’t be surprised if during non rush hours on the subway if random people end up in your car trying to sell things. Just don’t indicate interest and they won’t bother you. Don’t sit in the seats designated for the elderly or pregnant women on subway trains, you can’t miss seeing them. Lastly, whenever I was on the trains during busy hours, I always gave my seat to an elderly person if no seats were available. It sometimes confused them that I would give up my seat for them but once they understood they appreciated it and were so sweet.

Most valuable thing of South Korea people is efficient. Every Korean thing about efficient when they do something. Work, game, study relationships etc...
@winexhd937311 ай бұрын
Except it ends up hurting them. My perspective on South Koreans is that it is more efficient, but it is fast and dirty efficient. It's like stuffing all your clothes in your closet and calling it a clean room. Except the room is hardly clean, it is dirty but appears clean. They have this quick and dirty mindset. I have seen them use cheap thinking if that makes sense. They map highly complex natures and programs to very simply ideas. For example, you are struggling with math, study more. Need better grades, so study more more more. More is better, so study more. Study until 7am - 11pm, then get less than optimum sleep, and get the f* up and study more. What?? Your grades still haven't gone up? Are you reta*ded? Are you stupid? Take away sleep now, clearly isn't enough. Do you see? This is one example, but efficiency doesn't mean everything quick, there are deeper questions to ask, but it is all superficial.
