Video Introduction:
If you have seen the case study we did on Dmart you know all about the Discounting technique that Dmart uses to lower the prices of the goods it sells. This is a huge hit for the local vendors and grocery stores in your locality. Startups like Bigbasket also have been doing the same in their own way but this is where Reliance Jio Mart is now acting as a saviour for these local stores, in this video we show you how. Watch it till the end to understand the challenges Relaince will face.

I disagree on some points - I dont think so the increased profitability of kirana stores will last long as competition within themselves would reduce margins - Credit would play a big role in this model - This models is just like zomato, etc where they first provide benefits to the seller and then exploit them or run them out of competition once the process becomes irreversible

The Jio model is based on the assumption that each and every kirana store will have spare manpower to deliver the products ordered in the neighbourhood, which is not exactly the case. If one goes around looking at these small little stores, they are mostly manned by just one person and employing an additional person for deliveries, which may be very few or none in a day, is economically an unfeasible option. Moreover, people want to see, feel and choose the products. Moreover, the Dmart's advantage is that it entices the customer to buy products that may not be immediately necessary. Whereas one orders online only what one wants. The online thing probably worked very well due to pandemic lockdown etc., but not necessarily during normal times. For most people, especially housewives, going to a big store (or a mall) is a kind of outing they look forward to because in India, besides the TV there is nothing that can be called entertainment. That is how Dmart stores are packed in particular during the weekends.

Outing is what I thought will not be in favor of Swiggy and Zomato but these businesses are flourishing. You missed one important point, When Reliance will acquire products directly from the FMCG companies, Eventually it will add the volumes from Reliance Fresh, Smart etc so they won't be ordering for 40,000 packs, They may order for 80,000 packs and can further reduce the prices. Secondly, With shiprocket and more such companies, Delivery is no big thing, They will fix it very soon as they add geographies.

Kirana stores are themselves responsible for their downfall, when I was in India, in my hometown, Baroda, I had tried several times to convince the nearest neighborhood grocers to implement an online platform to manage their ordering, packaging and delivering and that way back several years ago; but to no avail. Offered them to do it for free, but the new tech averse business are bound to die a slow and painful death. With the entry of a managing platform, the death will be even slower with further diminishing returns.

Jio's strategy 1. Eliminate wholesalers in comming 5 to 8 years. 2. Create monopoly in indian wholesale business leaving no other choice for retailers. 3. Exploit the retailers as now they don't have any other supplier. 4. If you study amazon how it disrupted retail in the US.If history repeats itself , Considering Jio being savior for kirana stores is nothing more than marketing gimmick to appeal to public sentiments , Jio mart will displace the same Kirana store it "supports" s once the supply chain & technology robust well tested and good run . It will be efficient system of course ,yeah lsoon you will see clouser of of kirana stores once jio mart reach's market domination, because by then will launch their own stores. In distant future kirana store would nothing but franchises of jio mart. Its very well crafted idea by jio.

It is clear that with Jiomart's Strategy at one go the Kirana store concept will get wiped out since the dependence of all Kirana stores for procurement will be with Jiomart .Kiranas would never be able to negotiate with a Giant like Jio,Kiranas would have nowhere to go but Jio if they become Jimarts franchisee. The point on higher margins for Kirana is subjective in a market economy .I feel Kiranas shouldn't align with big retailers they should form their own digital platform for procurement and localised sales .That would empower Kirana stores better than going Job,Bigbasket or Dmart.

Great analysis as always but for the first time I felt that the study is incomplete as it is missing one major factor. Dmart, Big Basket, and Groffers might be the biggest competitors of Reliance in tier 1 and 2 cities. But in the rest of the India, kirana stores are their biggest competitors. People living in the rest of the India are still hesitant ordering groceries online. By JioMart, Reliance wants to lure this specific demography. Once these people will get habituated with ordering online, Reliance will slowly cut ties with the local kirana stores and start providing goods directly.

1. When the videos says Dmart reaches 72 Cities and Reliance has the reach of kirana in 2500 cities, that's exactly what it means. (Tier 2/3 accessibility) 2. Dmart business strategy is well proven. Their first store was opened in 2002. They believe in creating clusters. All stores are owned by them avoiding rentals (reason they survived harsh lockdowns, only profit was badly hit) Looking at unorganised Indian retail market spectrum, both Jio and Dmart has immense potential in coming decade. Jiomart will definitely effect Dmart but Dmart fundamentals are strong and well proven. Indian households love to do grocery shopping by visiting Departmental stores and comparing prizes. It is like small outing for home maker women’s.

Jio mart has a killer idea at hand.It would benifit the Tech savy and small buy customer but wont effect Dmart much. Dmart is usually located in unfavourable locations.you visit 1 or 2 times and do bulk buying. If Jio mart becomes prevalant like 7-11 in Thailand but with prices like Dmart. One could do small buying at good prices. Right now small supermarkets provide items of all range on MRP. little or no discount.

Reliance Fresh used to charge "above" the MRP while the isles declaimed discount. Empirical experience 😟 After I admonished the tellers that "no one can charge above MRP", they sheepishly conceded (both the times). That means they knew 'they were charging above the MRP' . Once duped, I'll never buy from the Reliance Group PS. I experienced this twice in Reliance Fresh located off CG road, Ahmedabad

Brother, more issue with Jiomart, jio mart takes the whole amount from the customer (non-kirana store customer) in spite of not having either one or two products in the package delivered and this happens most of the time. Then when i placed request about refund of the non-delivered item they take 15 to 20 days for the same and also they don't give it in Jiomart wallet but in Jiomart Cashback, moreover, we can only use 20 percent of the order amount from Cashback, per order. Due to this issue, my 2000 rupees is stuck in Jiomart Cashback which i suppose to receive in my Bank account or wallet. So, every time i order items i can use 20 percent of order amount and in the same order delivered 2 items will be missing which cost me at least 600 more. So, my money is inching out at every single order, its a strategic loss planned by Jiomart for us.

Thank you, Ganesh. In midst of all these Retail giants' war going on, do you plan to make one on the repercussion of this spiked up consumer industry? The backward integration of Retail : They will invest in the processing and production of, say food. Then go backwards and invest in farmland (twisting and tweaking the land laws). Then enslave the farmers to dedicate their production only to benefit the Big Retail. Not withstanding the irreversible damage on soil, water, environment, etc.

To all those who're saying it's a strategy of JIO to create monopoly in retail and consumers won't have any other choice if they start exploiting it. Well, I don't know why do we underestimate indian consumers? The times have changed and as diverse as India is there won't be a single winner. It will be a close competition between few of the best and at the end consumers will be winning it.

Ok, I am with this. Even though I am invested in DMart, I would like JioMart to help local businesses. It sounds like a good idea; Get dmart style mass procurement & big basket style logistics. Sell to the kiranas & make a tiny cut which is alot if they have many kiranas stores on their side. I think it's a win-win for the producer, the distributor & the kirana. Together doing what DMart does alone. Still DMart will be more efficient but can be hit by such competition. Power to the people ✊

@7:40 If you understand it clearly, JioMart is not empowering Kirana stores at all. It's just using them as Warehouses. If JIoMart solves all 4 challenges you discussed later in the video, then Kirana stores will be just delivery partner to a JioMart( which is actual Kirana stores). And when you allow someone to do business for you, you're going to make losses in long term on your books. Closed contacts are the worst thing for any business unless you've strategy to get high market participation. And i don't see a high market participation benefit with Jiomart for any kirana store. Another great video man. but I would also love to see some videos which explains their logic behind strategies, not the strategies only :)

If jio mart becomes a distributor for local Kirana stores then existing small and local distributors will be negatively impacted. sooner or later their business will vanish . Although this model will be useful for customers with lower price being offered but it will create a monoply of jio mart and they will increase the prices later and ultimately last mile customer has to pay the price.

It reminds me of Reliance communication with lot of big plans to grab the customers in their hand with CDMA which failed and later Anil Ambani became bankrupt. Always remember Dmart can be successful in big cities, kiranas in big cities have already become 1/10 of what it used to be. Only ones which had certain location advantages and capital have survived many of them have moved towards slum areas. Small cities and villages dont have competition from likes of Dmart as it is not profitable. So kirana stores would prefer what they have as distribution and credit system rather than Jio mart. Dmart is a very sound business Damani understood the game with lot of experience running the franchise outlet of Apna bazar a Cooperative store in navi mumbai. Rather what Jio mart should have focused was opening stores like Costco... wholesale style with membership with low price and high volume with good quality products, kiranas could directly buy from the store in volume and sale at competing price in their store.
