Translated to: "Jesus, You Hold My Hand"; from Melanesian Choirs - The Blessed Islands/The Thin Red Line Soundtrack
English Translation of Lyrics:
Jesus hold my hand
Hear my cry when I call you
There is none like you
I praise you Jesus
I come unto you now
Take me as I am
Jesus I come unto you
Take me as I am
I humbly come unto you
And say thank you for everything given to me
And I will be ready for your return Jesus
I come unto you now
Take me as I am
Jesus I come unto you
Take me as I am

"This great evil. Where does it come from? How'd it steal into the world? What seed, what root did it grow from? Who's doin' this? Who's killin' us? Robbing us of life and light. Mockin' us with the sight of what we might've known. Does our ruin benefit the earth? Does it help the grass to grow or the sun to shine?"

The reason why these words are so strong, is that at their very end, they pose a very serious and unanswerable question - does life benefit from death and vice-versa. The death of one man and the death of 6 million men, are ultimately the same to this universe.

I saw this movie by coincidence 2 times on tv, the days before my mother died. Although a war movie it resonated deeply with me in this situation... especially witt, the theme around life, death and the "collateral" beauty around these aspects. I shook when he started talking about remembering the day his mother died. It felt like too much of a coincidence. When my mother died a day later on a december evening, I looked at the beautiful sunset sky above the hospital... and I became Witt. I saw it all, like he saw beyond it. I accepted it. It changed me forever and whenever I hear this song it reminds me of my transformation and the beauty in this world, and I feel grateful. Death is not only an end, it's also a beginning.

If a film is an entertainment, this is not a film. It is far more than a film. It is a meditation. Malick is less a filmmaker than he is high priest. And I mean this in the the most spiritual way.

This inspired song was written in 1990 by Benjamin Tekulu, one ostudents at King George VI School in Honiara and was recorded at the SIBC studios in the same year by the KG6 King's Kids. Sony Pictures paid Benjamin a modest fee for using the song in the 1998 movie "The Thin Red Line", although obviously the song was not yet in existence in 1943 when the movie was set. Since that time the song has become popular worldwide especially with expatriate Solomon Islanders but the songwriter is largely slated as "unknown" - just thought I would correct that.

My dad went scuba diving off Guadalcanal and said the Thin Red Line does a brilliant job depicting how the natives are. Very chill and happy people. I kind of envy their life. I also love how a big theme in this movie is that the US and Japanese are effectively aliens fighting it out on this island

The line separating good and evil passes not through states, nor between classes, nor between political parties either -- but right through every human heart -- and through all human hearts. This line shifts. Inside us, it oscillates with the years. And even within hearts overwhelmed by evil, one small bridgehead of good is retained

I saw this movie once and that was enough..dont\cant watch WWII japanese campaign movies..My father was a WWII Marine who fought, bled and suffered on Guadal, and then on to other islands. Growing up we kids would be awakened often by the screams of our father in his sleep. We were young and never knew..we would always here our mothers voice waking our father telling him "it's OK, your having a nightmare". Dad had a lifetime of nightmares throughout our childhood in the 50's and on..he's free now and his tormented nightmares have ended. What he and every other Marine endured on that island and the rest of the campaign must have been nothing short of a living nightmare.

A beautiful song that calms me down and takes me into another world. "I `ve seen another world" he says, and means , that he has seen a world, that is so much better than our high - tech world. He`s ABSOLUTELY RIGHT, in what he says. I also read the novel by James Jones, the film based on. The novel is much better than the film, and also much more detailed, and the film is already good.
