I used to play this game all of the time when I was younger in middle school mostly. I remember all of these tracks very well. During the final week of classes one year in high school, one of our teachers had us form small groups and have a Sim City 2000 competition. We had computers in that classroom. He graded based on all kinds of things, including the city budget. My two teammates just let me take over and we won the competition with ease. I think we got donuts as our reward. I was king for the day. That must have been back in the year 1999-2001 or something. I still listen to this music when I work at my computer sometimes.

@@DrewPan I don't know, it puzzled me, I always collapsed and couldn't find prosperous success as I did in 2k and 3k. The auto street wiring was a bit messy. In terms of ambiance and soul it also didn't reach the godly status of 2000. I was younger and there is a first exposition bias, but 3000 was excellent and brought so much to the table. SC4 however lives me bitter; and worst still, the last version "sim city", I played 2 hours and that's it. It's not interesting and has lost many details and all engagement.
@DrewPan5 жыл бұрын
@@vindieu I think the difference between 4 and it's predecessors is that 4 wasn't designed to build single cities. You had to juggle a nation of cities that help each other. A lot of cities don't have the land available to be totally self sufficient, so you'll have people going to find jobs in neighboring cities, or buying additional water or electricity from another town. I doubt I'm the only person who had a garbage city, whose sole purpose was to burn and recycle rubbish. All its income comes from being paid by other cities.

If you listen carefully, you may spot that absolutely *every* song has a pentatonic-based melody. This basically means it can be played using only the black keys on a piano. If you have no piano skills, try these! This makes all the tracks feel like they "fit" together-but I imagine also made them much easier to compose! It would have been great for the other DOS games I had that have issues with the faster CPUs of today (like SimCopter).

Variusak Interesting :D. I know that nostalgia. I wasnt playing dosgames when I was a child. Just online games :D (I am the new generation :D). But about 3 years before I discovered the dosgames. I played them the most when I had a flash internet with a small capacity (about 10gb) so it was slow and I had to download only small things. I already discovered Dosbox and played DOS games at that time, but I with that slow internet I realized that there is a TON of fun in few MBs. That was awesome. I think i just remembered the Space commander now :D. And RED BARON for sure that was pure awesomnes. But thats not nostalgia. Thats present for me :D because I am still playing that as you can see. I played SC2 yesterday when I had only 2 firemen. Well my city is really big but I had to cut out the half of the it by small water squares (as often... its the best option to put out the fire. The lights on the logo are actually an example of how the game engine does "animation". There's no actual _animation_ in the sense that any tile has separate "frames". Rather, part of the colour palette is sets of colours that cycle, and these can be seen by opening the tileset editor. So, for example, there is a set of four colours that cycle through dark red, dark red, red and yellow, each one offset by one. (Colour 1 is DR, DR, R, Y, colour 2 is DR, R, Y, DR, 3 is R, Y, DR, DR, and 4 is Y, DR, DR, R) By setting each light to be one of these colours, you get the illusion of animation. This set is also used for the runway edge lights and the traffic signals, among other things. There are several sets of blue shades which are used for water pipes and the blades on the wind turbines, and a set which is six grey pixels and two dark blue pixels, which is used to animate traffic on road tiles. It's quite a clever method.

Great! This is more or less exactly how I remember the music from all those shoulder-numbing 12- or 18-hour sessions. With a few exceptions, SC2000 being one of them, I usually find video game music annoying and turn it off. But this I still remember, note for note. Oh, those memories... I realize now that I haven't heard this for fifteen years. 1997 all over again...

The opening for Sim City 2013! (hopefully)

The hours me and friend spent playing this game on the sega Saturn was unreal. I had to buy a memory card because of this. The Saturn could either save game save files for a few dozen games or 1 sim City save file.

I got into the SimCity games thanks to a Mac version of 2000 in my school's computer class (It was just one Mac, everything else was Windows XP SP3 at the time) and I wound up playing 3000: Unlimited, 4: Deluxe and now I'm binge playing the hell out of Cities: Skylines. I just *can't* help but play these soundtracks while playing that game and they've become ingrained in my head. Don't get me wrong, I do like the official CS soundtrack and the in-game radio is silly but I like the style of these soundtracks I experienced before CS.

I grew up at the tail end of the dos gaming era and right when Windows 2000 and XP were new, and I played this game so many times back in the day (though I royally sucked at it lol). The perks of having a Windows 98 pc in the early 2000s. 😄

This music sounded a lot better in the windows version. At least on my soundcard growing up.

The Windows soundtrack sounds like crap. This version is where it's at.

StuffAboutSandwiches you probably had a sound blaster. Look up the version for that

Sound.Blaster 16 had OPL-3 emulation, which is AdLib (this version). Didn't they sound the same? I think OP is talking about the Windows builtin General MIDI soundfont.

This should be close: kzbin.info/www/bejne/p2XKnHSZn5x6nrc Windows used GS softsynth, which emulated Roland SC-55 (Sound Canvas) except for the lack of reverb and some other quirks. This link is the SC-55 version, so it has some additional effects.

SimCity 2000, and Streets of SimCity. Spent hours messing around on both games growing up.
