I'm a new white belt just starting out in my late 40's. I'm a 20 year gym rat strong by any measure. I can 100% relate to strength being a curse. My tendency to "seek answers in strength" stems from this being all I know when getting into trouble during a roll and an urgency to brute force my way out of it. The result is almost always failure and I'm completely gassed on top of it. During my most recent roll, I slowed down, I made sure any expense of energy had purpose and I allowed myself to problem solve instead of use only strength. I couldn't believe the difference in energy used and my movement became much more controlled. This was my first "ah ha" moment. Great video! You are helping others and inspiring people like me to keep going. Thank you.

Thank you! I'm strong, but i use my strength for defense n to make my rolling partners slip n make mistakes for escapes or reversals. I like seeing this, because it is a good way to gage my progress as a 4-stripe white belt. I definitely don't use strength against stronger opponents, use their movements n mistakes to learn n take advantage. Also! There are times when a newer white belt just keeps a lock n uses all their strength to try to tap me, but it isn't working n it is boring. I "give them the tap" to just reset, but then! They're so tired after that i easily reverse anything they give me n I'm just resting. Nice video.
@Jitsover5011 ай бұрын
Instead of using strength to earn reversals or escapes, try doing it slow and incrementally. Also waiting for your partner to make a mistake is all fine and well but at the highest levels mistakes are forced. I always say a purple belt is sneaky. A brown belt doesn't need to be sneaky. A black belt can call what submission he wants in advance. Yes I love when my partner uses everything to submit me then we reset and I pass his guard in 2 seconds. haha. Thank you for the comment! Respect!

The purple belt lucky that the white belt did not injure him . The white belt 4 stripes is super strong and that’s how you get injured as a purple belt . You really have to be careful with guys that are so super strong with little technical skill . As a purple belt, you can roll with a brown belt or a black belt all day long and never get injured .

I agree with the curse of strength. Happened to me during my evening class tonight. I almost always overpower my opponents due to the natural strength I’ve been blessed with but I over exert myself due to my reliance on strength that’s always gotten me out of all situations. But my God a 65kg , 5’8 brown belt guy tired the shit out of me and submitted me. I’m 112kgs at 6’1. It’s very humbling and reminds me that I ain’t shit 😂. Ahh the joys of Jiu Jitsu.
