I don't even need to watch the video or read the comments to know what the tone is. Let me just say that it doesn't even matter who directed this, we would find SOMETHING to complain about. The Star Wars fanbase is something that will always be at war with itself. This is what happens when you have a franchise that has lasted DECADES. You have people that guard the OG trillogy like it is the Holy Grail, and hate everything else. People who were exposed to Star Wars through the Prequels who see no problems with it. And some people who just like the EU. Or people like me and my Dad who just like Star Wars as a whole. Even Korey being a guy that is like "Fuck the prequels, fuck George Lucas, I KNOW WHATS REAL STAR WARS." Shows how some Star Wars fans work. Can we just watch these as movies? No. Because these movies are a part of people lives. And the lives of those people probably affect their oppinion of the films. I am going to see this movie. I am going to most likely love it. And no one will take that away from me. May the force be with you all.

Not really. My first real exposure to Star Wars was the prequels as I was in junior high then. Didn't care for it much then. When TFA was coming out and there was so much hype for it I rewatched the OT (which I only saw clips of growing up) and then the PT. The overall story arch worked even if the performance in the PT was not good. I then watched TFA in cinemas and realized its continuity problems and how it barely explains anything as well as blatantly copied episode 4. I understood why JJ copied episode 4, for cheap nostalgia feels and playing it safe because of the vitriol spewed at the prequels. A natural reaction, however the cheap copy of episode 4 also meant their unwillingness to expand upon the cannon and universe appropriately. People liked the EU, which is basically an expansion of the cannon. People hated the prequels because of bad directing and performances. It was a filming process problem, not story. That's the problem with TFA. It filmed well, but the story was lack luster. It looked good and had better performances, though not by far, but it dropped in its world expansion story telling. I think Disney thought everything about the prequels were wrong, so they sought to fix it and overcompensated by getting lazy with story. They fixed directing and performance, but in turn destroyed the one thing that was good and that was the overarching narrative, which in all honesty I think only George Lucas has the ability to do since Star Wars IS his story. Evident by Disney not having the passion to expand the universe rather pull nostalgia for $$$.

Lone Wander idk why you felt the need to say "not really" in your comment. Your oppinion just further goes what I was saying. Everyone has some different way they feel about this franchise. The things I listed are just a handful of reasons for why people like it. I can not just list them all. That being said I did have to do a paper analyzing and analysis (analysisception?)on the nostalgia in TFA. And if what it said is true, then hopefully from here it won't be copies of the OT. But if it is, can't say I blame Disney for trying to stay in a comfort zone.
@lonewander6772

When I said "not really" I am referring to " You have people that guard the OG trillogy like it is the Holy Grail, and hate everything else. People who were exposed to Star Wars through the Prequels who see no problems with it." More specifically the prequels part. On second thought maybe you're saying people who saw the prequels first have no problems with the prequels. Kind of a broad stroke, but I guess so. There are people who hate the prequels just because it's the popular opinion and people who love TFA because of the general opinion of reviewers that it brought back the OT feeling, even though they were never their to experience the OT feeling. Bandwagoners.
@Guymanbot97
@Guymanbot97 7 жыл бұрын
Lone Wander Once again, those were just small examples how some people might feel. There are also the people that you have pointed out. The types of Star Wars fans are too big to count. And I agree with you on the band wagon thing. Me being a guy that doesn't really mind any of the movies (well...maybe episode 1 is an acception) I was friends with people who felt the same way. But out of nowhere they say the prequels are bad, and I know full well they haven't even seen them again in a long time. But hey. We could be here all day discussing this. At the end of the da the main point I was trying to make is that it doesn't matter who directs this final movie, there will be someone a few years from now who will go out of their way to say it is the worst.
@lonewander6772
@lonewander6772 7 жыл бұрын
Daniel Silva Years later? I am sure there will be people coming out of the cinemas saying it. Unless they pull something amazing such as Kylo being the good guy all along and Rey being evil, then I probably won't like it like how I felt with TFA.

I think George Lucas put it best when he was giving his studio to Disney and people were asking about an episode 7 coming out of all this. He talked about how filmmaking is a lot like gambling: you get a director to make a film that has the stuff that appeals to people the most according to past films and predict how much you’re going to get back through national & international screenings. Because there are more and more directors who, whether or not you like their films, don’t take risks or use what’s popular to where a producer or a board of executives ask “Why do we need to develop something new when we can get bland director X?”. That’s how we got J.J. Abrams again at the helm of Episode 9. Whether or not you like the film (personally, I don’t and find the use of practical effects to be a desperate attempt to make the movie seem good without the move actually being good) J.J. Abrams didn’t take any risks in that film, but filled a set of quotas: Make sure it’s similar to Episodes IV, have a diverse cast, bring in the older actors for their original roles, use a lot of scenery from the original films and so on and so forth. It’s definitely a practice that becomes more and more apparent thanks to the internet bring this stuff to light, but it makes news like this feel more and more heart breaking every time: from Edger Wright’s Antman to Genndy Tartakovsky’s Popeye film and now this.

Here's my opinion. When TFA came out we were ALL on board because we were begging for scraps. Then after a while, especially after Rogue One we realized how minimum work JJ Abram did in comparison. Hopefully Rogue One and Ep. VIII will have enough influence to make him realize that the conclusion can't be another remake.

Blunt Capcom Representative #4 Rogue One suffered from problems J.J. doesn't falter badly in: characters. The biggest problems that (eerie enough) Trevorrow and Edwards should be known for by now. Both Godzilla and Jurassic World are filled with flaws that TFA are falsy accused of. Plots that hype on the spectacles that skid away from giving good direction on story and characters where they just come liabilities before you see the spectacles. This is coming from someone who liked Godzilla and Rogue One. I feel like 8 will be a different for the trilogy, not just because Rian Johnson but because Lucasfilm can do new things, now the Prequels don't haunt them; with Rogue One setting a war tone and Han Solo film being more smuggle crime, they want to do new things. And seeing how Rogue One had these criticisms, Lucasfilm must have stopped Trevorrow and brought J.J. back; despite cancerous fans hurting him without remember for a second who George Lucas was during the Prequels, Lucasfilm remembers and probably will check themselves to not do it again (see: Death Star II, brother and sister reveal, dead Boba Fett, and Ewoks for examples)

Sigh... The entire defense that TFA had justification to basically copy ANH is Special Pleading: a logical fallacy. Why should SWs get a pass for this kind of thing? Yeah, the PT wasn't well received, but it wasn't like LF could go back to them. Like them or not, that story had an end point. So really, anyone to propagates this thing is talking BS. SWs could have very easily ventured into new paths. Look at Planet of the Apes? Those new films, while remakes, ventured into the unique territory, or better yet Mad Max Fury Road. And do not dare say they cannot be compared. They certainly can as they have established franchises. SWs may be more popular and entrenched, but that hardly matters. Fury Road paid homage to Road warrior, but also mixed things up. TFA barely did that. So really, it is people who make that claim that make me sick.
@groovymovies390
@groovymovies390 7 жыл бұрын
Difference is, Planet of the Apes tried to go back to the original (hence Tim Burton's version) and when THAT failed they went in a new direction. The same director did Fury Road and Beyond Thunderdome still mostly received positive reception, it just wasn't as good as the previous ones. Star Wars on the overhand is a much more popular franchise and the prequels would openly start wars between fans. There's a reason Jar Jar Binks and Midichlorians are despised as much as they are. A fanbase as big as Star Wars can be ferocious and tear things apart. Hence, Disney played it safe in their first film, trying to ease and clam the fans. Clearly it backfired since fans got pissed off with that too but why people seemed genuinely surprised that Disney played it safe seems bizarre to me. Everyone seems to criticise them for playing it safe all the time so why did everyone expect different from then in this one case? The film was literally marketed as, in MovieBob's words: "Look, we're using practical effects again! No midichlorians! X-Wings, ti-fighters, stormtroopers and the falcon! Luke, Leia, Han and Chewie are back! Please love us again! Please!: and yet people were then shocked when they got what was written on the tin. Which is ironic because they also get angry when trailers are misleading (Iron Man 3) so I don't know if fans will ever be satisfied at this stage.

Am I the only one who thinks Kathleen Kennedy should've just hired Ron Howard, Steven Spielberg, Robert Zemeckis or Joe Johnston from the beginning instead of these "fresh new directors"? I mean, they know what each of the can deliver & it's not a "blaster shot" in the dark. If KK & Lucasfilm wanted to "play it safe", that's the way they should've gone w/the new Star Wars movie. Don't hire a "hot new director". Hire people you know will give you what you want.

I would have to disagree there. He will always get my respect for getting the ball rolling with the original but the prequels showed that he was running on an empty tank. Also, if you read on the making of the original, specially Empire Strikes Back, you will realize that he was very lucky to be surrounded by people who were not afraid to tell him no on a lot of his ideas or put their own ideas forward instead. To be fair, it's not only him. You see a lot of good directors go out of their prime eventually or it's just the simple fact that you just have a few hits in you (nothing to be ashamed of). If you watch Strange Magic, a project without any studio interference and fanboys holding him accountable for (two things Lucas always complain about), you will realize that that the guy is behind the times and like I already said, running on an empty creative tank.

I dont know i mean im a big Star Wars fan ive followed all of this news and rumor concerning the sequel trilogy. Im thinking that maybe Colin Trevorrow actually had a solid idea for how to explore Luke Skywalker and handle the character with respect and give him very real relevance to the new, younger characters namely Kylo Ren. And maybe Colin came across as "difficult to work with" because Kathleen Kennedy just didnt want the character of Luke Skywalker to have a big role in the sequel trilogy. I mean listen to her talk in a interview where she actually says "girls cant relate to the character of Luke Skywalker." Plus one big rumor was that Kennedy's plan was to basically kill the three main OT characters in each episode - Han in ep7, Luke in ep8 and then finally it would be Leia im ep9 only she tragically died in real life. Alot of fans feel that Rian handled Luke Skywalker's character arc badly in ep8. So it makes you wonder exactly what was Colin's ideas?

Why you ask? 1) he’s big kid with an attitude and passion that could be divided into 10 other directors, 2) he’s great craftsman with artistic vision in his head (the force is strong with him) 3) he’s the proven Re-booter, with the efficiency of 80s masters of filmmaking, he transformed “The Greatest Hits of Star Wars” and he fired old product (franchise) in a new, modern, digital standard, respecting the love to practical effects etc. and so with E7 SW returned and infatuate once again the millions of hardcore fans as well as new kids who do not remember the 70s / 80s. 4) of course there was a bit of whining that E7 was a copy of NEW HOPE, but let the first cast a stone who: a) did not hyped like a school kid on E7 first date, b) did not leave the cinema after the premiere with banana on the lips. E7 is like an old good hamburger and someone will say "but it's a hamburger again" ... yes, but how did this hamburger tasted? As if it was the best food eaten for years. With all the above and in fact that JJ listens and co-operate great with the heirs of SW universe (he doesn’t create anything detached from or super-strange) if he’ll make it with a bit of artistic freedom he will close the new trilogy beautifully, efficiently and (unfortunately) safely.

Isn't part of what made the original trilogy the fact that each movie was done by different directors? Now, we're just going back to more of the same... Once again reverting back to Abrams seems like such a creatively bankrupt copout move to me. This is now just another J.J. Abrams project with Rian Johnson sandwiched in between for whatever reason. Regardless of how good or bad of a director this guy is (and maybe he is not the best choice for the finale), I am sure it would have definitely at least been INTERESTING for this whacky guy to helm Star Wars. I think this guy would have done something beyond just fanservice and familiarity, something more experimental and new.

I think it would behoove Lucasfilm, Kathleen Kennedy, Disney and Abrams to realize that although we love the nostalgia the classics give us, that we don't necesarrily WANT to see that onscreen every single time. I'm kind of hoping that in time we will see a ton of different things happening for the stories and characters and that JJ doesnt give us a tired retread of something we've seen before - don't get me wrong, I LOVED the Force Awakens, but I was really looking forward to rogue One as well. In terms of entertainment value and looking at different sides of the Star Wars universe that we haven't quite seen, Rogue One delivered more than TFA, but I still enjoy the hell out of both films, and I'm also looking forward to the Last Jedi (seeing Luke train Rey is gonna be hopefuly as cool as Yoda di for Luke). In closing, I really would like to believe that abrams and Kennedy are listening to the fans who are sensible enough to tell them "Okay, thanks for stirring up our nostalgia feels here, but let's go into some completely new territory that the fans would NEVER expect and somehow it still makes sense." Hard to do in a franchise where everyone expects the same story beats all the time, but we've had 7 films of that, and I think it's time to go into uncharted territory. "Wild Space" if you get the reference (EU fans, I know you're out there!).

Weird, this was the first time I've seen a picture of Trevorrow but it funny how it sort of matches what I imagined he would look like when I read news of him being an insufferable prick. I agree with Martin on his assessment. Although I didn't really like JW, I recognize that it was a well made movie. However, I also didn't understand the hype surrounding this guy after it. I guess it was because JW made a lot of money???

JJ doesn't get or understand Star Wars. How someone can be so adamant in sticking as close as possible to the original movies, making basically a remake of ANH scene for scene, and still fuck up the Star Wars look and feel is insane. The helicopter shots, the shaky cams, the dutch angles, the bland as hell new characters, the plot that's all about making Rey look perfect instead of giving us just a honest, humble hero, but the biggest misstep of them all is the complete lack of setting scale and world building. Everything in previous movies evoked a larger, living breathing galaxy. From background designs, to dialogue bits. TFA is just what you're seeing on-screen, it's a movie too busy trying to make itself look cool that it forgets to develop its own mythology. JJ didn't let the world breath or grow, even though he had plenty of opportunities to. It's a thing he does, he makes generic pretty looking action movies. That doesn't work for Star Wars.

Porgs are in episode 8. directed rian johnson. not JJ's. Damn I doubt JJ will not give us Return of the Jedi. JJ's does listen and did regret not showing chewie hugging leia after Han's death. Is TFA perfect no, but it helped set the franchise and I'm pretty sure Rian Johnson will take the movie in a new direction that will make episode 9 way different than Return of the Jedi. also JJ ddn't write star trek into darkness that was Robert Orci, Alex Kurtzman, and Damon Lindelof and The lost ending was Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse. People luv hate the director for shit he didn't write.

The force awakens was good and fun to watch, no doubt. It was exciting to see a new Star Wars movie, but disappointing to see that it was basically A New Hope. The only difference being more characters and you were left feeling that you were not missing anything at all. It's why I'm now overly excited about future main/current time star Wars movies. I'll just let it come. Meanwhile, the spin offs/side stories are more interesting and better. Rogue One is the best sw movie out of Disney so far...

This is so disappointing. Jurassic World was my favorite movie of 2015 and I was pretty excited to see what Colin Trevorrow was going to do with Star Wars: Episode IX. The one good thing that comes out of this vile news is that this is evidence as to why I have zero aspirations to be a movie director. I have a lot of anxiety about what are the right decisions to make in script editing, shot composition, telling my actors how I want them to act in a scene, and the likelihood of having disagreements with the producers on what the final cut of the movie should be. Directors like Sam Raimi, Jon Faverau, and Marc Webb all had disagreements with the producers on what the final cut of their movies should be. Yeah, I’m a human being that was made for a lot of things, but there is no doubt in my mind that directing a movie like Star Wars: Episode IX wasn’t one of them. Yeah, I know my limits during my short time in this world people.

There was a solid month after Force Awakens came out where it seemed like the majority of people were, by and large, enjoying the film and rejuvenated in their excitement for the future of Star Wars. Of course, there were the nagging "A New Hope" comparisons, but those seemed largely overshadowed by the spirit of adventure evident in Episode 7. Then Max Landis brought up the whole "Mary Sue" thing, and it was all downhill from there. Honestly, I think Star Wars fans were relieved to have a reason to hate Star Wars again. After over a decade of bashing George Lucas for the prequels, there were a few weeks of respite when the general consensus was an enjoyment of Episode 7. But once the Mary Sue thing circulated, Star Wars fans seemed nothing but thrilled to be able to complain yet again. So, Star Wars fans complained during the prequels, bemoaning the fact that those movies completely departed from the vibe of the originals. In a failed attempt to introduce (questionably worthwhile) new elements to the franchise, George Lucas was established as Star Wars enemy #1. And then The Force Awakens rolls around, and above all else, it strives to return the franchise to the vibe of the originals. Maybe it borrows too much in the process, but make no mistake, Episode 7 is a valiant attempt to satisfy the complaining masses. And after the movie's been out for a few weeks, what's the consensus? "It's *too* much like the originals." "At least George tried to do something new!" Etc. etc. JJ Abrams and Kathleen Kennedy become the new Star Wars enemy #1 & #2, and the cycle is perpetuated. Long story short, these days Star Wars fans aren't Star Wars fans because they enjoy Star Wars -- they're Star Wars fans because they can find and vehemently whine about every thorn in the rosebush that is the Star Wars franchise. Aaaaand that's my story and I'm sticking to it.

Firstly, I'm a huge Max Landis fan (mostly for his online persona/insights on film), so I'm in no way trying to diminish his very valid point. Secondly, I largely agree with you. It's kind of a great power/great responsibility thing like you mention -- people will hold Star Wars to a higher standard. My point is that I don't exactly know why. Star Wars has maybe the biggest fandom on the planet, but when you boil it down, the general consensus only regards 2 or 3 of the 9 Star Wars films as actually being good. It's a fandom that's evolved into hating and complaining about every entry released into the series since 1983. More and more, that is the defining characteristic I see in fans of this franchise.

JJ Abrams likes to plagiarize EVERYTHING... When he made the Star Trek movies, he just took old material from the tv shows and movies and did nothing original himself.. He did the same thing with The Force Awakens and we all know he'll do it once again with Episode 9 😕. I can't put him up there with Steven Spielberg or George Lucas because nothing he does comes from him.
