I think “analysts” and commentators lose their credibility when they show favoritism towards one era of any sport. If you can’t say that Chris Paul is one of the greatest PGs of all time; you don’t know what you’re talking about. A great player is someone that could play in any era of the sport; CP3 has the old school toughness balanced with the modern high percentage shooting ability. It’s either a back in the day argument or recency bias stance. You have to evaluate every factor of competition/rules in each era and take that into consideration. Rules did not benefit scorers in older eras as much as they do now. Sometimes it means records held in those older eras are more impressive, sometimes it doesn’t. There are amazing players in all eras of the NBA - it’s so exhausting that we can’t just appreciate greatness and leave it at that.

Can`t challenge anyone on eras that`s why these debates always end up being two people yelling their opinions at one another. If one person has made up their mind that x era was the best then there`s nothing anyone can say to change that. This conversation here. Bob Cousy changed the game... Curly Neal was just as popular as Cousy at that time and he played with the Globetrotters... Today`s fan and apparently broadcasters don`t realize how big the Globetrotter at that time. They sold out arenas all over the world and Curly was the show. In terms of NBA players it wasn`t until the 70`s when guys like Pistol Pete, Earl Monroe, Tiny Archibald, etc really started bringing in what today`s fan would recognize as NBA footwork and ball handling. Mad Dog is wrong here on many fronts but so is JJ. He said the 80`s which is a few years off. Around the time of the merger is when you can pin point the start of modern NBA basketball and basketball players.

I have trouble understanding why JJ Redick feels the need to deny Bob Cousy a place among the all time great guards. The proper perspective regarding the relative greatness of Cousy, CP, Redick, and Curry is their impact on the league. Cousy is the actual point God having created the mold, the blue print for what we call a pure PG today. Cousy was an innovator in running the fastbreak and deceptive passing as well as floor general, distributor, facillitator, running a balanced offense. Because of his success in the Celtic dynasty the PG position was defined and proven viable. Names like, Wilkins, Isaiah, Magic, Jackson, GP Stockton, Kidd, CP3 are descendents of the original PG GOAT. These guys built on his legacy. Cousy defined a position and it changed the game. CP3 is a splendid player and arguably reached the pinnacle of the PG position Cousy and Auerbach introduced with Sam Jones as off/shooting gaurd, Redicks position. Cp3 followed in the footsteps. He hasn't innovated or influenced the league playing style. In fact, CP3s failure to win titles has, in part, made him and the pure point gaurd a dinasaur to some degree. The game changing innovator today is Curry. Winning titles by weaponizing the arc as a shoot first PG along with off gaurd Klay Thompson, has changed the course of basketball. Curry is at the top of a lineage of scoring PGs like A.I., Tiny, Frazier, Big O, West, but branches off to be the three pt shoot first PG like Trae, Dame, and Luka that are the new PG. But the legacy of influence left by Cousy with little variation (Magic) going on 50+ years made the little guy integral to the NBA and should not be dismissed

Mad Dog goes by accomplishments only and not eye test. Anybody who understands basketball will tell you CP3 is a better player than Cousy. That's just beyond obvious. Magic would be a transcendent talent from the 50s-2020s. Same with guys like Curry and CP3, they are just so good at basketball that you drop them into any league era and they are great instantly. Cousy is only great in one era of basketball. He would need to be a completely different player to play in other eras. Jerry West would be great anytime from 50s to now but not Bob Cousy lol.. Cousy is not on Jerry West level, guys like Russo are just spreading misinformation to new generations lol. You want to harp on old school greats, talk about West, Oscar, Bill, Wilt, McAdoo, Kareem.... But when you start preaching Cousy its safe to assume: The person preaching is an old white guy from the east coast. I had a co-worker that was convinced Jerry Rice wasn't best WR ever, its the slow little white dude who played for the packers when there were like 5 teams. @@tonysopranooo1 That's not really an apt comparison. The real comparison would be comparing Einstein's knowledge of physics to a modern day physicist at the top of his field. Obviously a modern day physicist knows a lot more about how the universe works than Einstein did. They have a lot more information and they're able to expand on Einstein's ideas as well as all the other scientists in the last 70 years. Likewise, CP3 is a much better basketball player than Cousy ever was because there's a lot more infrastructure to become better, a lot more people play, and the game has evolved leaps and bounds in recent decades. I usually try to keep it “somewhat” simple: 1. 1949-1979 (Pre-Merger) - I know the merger was technically ‘76 but ‘79 is when they brought the 3-point line. - brought the game from the playground to the arena 2. 1980-1999 (Bird/Magic/Jordan) - 5/6 franchises added, modernized game - individual performance more valued, took the game to a global stage 3. 2000-present (Post-Jordan Era) - player empowerment/movement - more skilled individual players - branding, marketing, social media

I’ll be very honest with you, I’m getting tired of all of these “best player of all time”, “best point guard of all time”debates. Yes, Bob Cousy played in a very different era than Chris Paul. Yes, video evidence shows that Cousy didn’t use his left hand as much as the average player today. It’s not a fair comparison.. it just isn’t. Bob Cousy is, without a doubt, a revolutionary player… he defined what the point guard position is.. he’s the pioneer of the point guard position. For the modern era, Chris Paul is possibly the closest thing to that. Many people would say he is a revolutionary player as well (I personally wouldn’t, but I can respect those people that do). Both have had illustrious careers. To compare the two is utterly ridiculous because you can’t blame Bob Cousy for not playing like a modern player.. he didn’t know what the game would be like 60 years from when he played! Bob Cousy is probably in my top 3 favorite point guards ever and I believe he is one of the most transcendent players in NBA history.. I know today if we took 1957 Bob Cousy and dropped him in the NBA today, more than likely he would struggle.. but I guarantee you if we took Chris Paul today and dropped him in the 1950s-1960s with Cousy, he wouldnt necessarily prosper due to the referees being more strict in carrying and traveling and fouling. With today, you can carry the ball 94 feet and it’s legal… people take 4-5 steps all the time when wanting to dunk on a fast break and the referees turn two blind eyes. Also, back then, players were playing in Converse Tennis shoes rather than these high tops and low tops that are custom designed. We can evaluate these players on their era and what they did do and should have done, but comparing eras is always a sore subject and someone always feels disrespected by the other person. Sorry for the long rant, but I hate someone like Bob Cousy getting disrespected because he played in the 1960s era and I hate having a present player like Chris Paul getting disrespected because he is not transcendent. Hope whoever reads this is understanding, open and has a great day :)

but you also have to be objective. a player with limited skillet vs a player with a much more expansive skillet both in their primes who wins. just run it in your head or think like a player. if you were facing an average Joe from back then your skillet would most likely be more varied since you grew up watching players who could do more with the ball. play against someone who can largely only dribble with one hand. you force him to his weak hand and boom game over. but you also have to be a nuanced thinker. a guy like wilt transcends generations. he's 7'2 benched 600lbs , was as fast as Jordan/LeBron and stronger than Shaq. who in today's league is guarding him in the post? Giannis would probably do the best job on him but even then wilt outmuscles him and has a lethal fade away. so objectively speaking just based on what each player provides skill wise and build wise you can determine who would win a game of one on one without being disrespectful. I know if I faced an average Joe, who could only dribble with one hand and was roughly my height I'm destroying him whether it's 1962 or 2022.

This is why we compare relative to eras instead of across eras because you always have to sh*t on earlier eras as time goes by. The 90s and 2010s are gonna be seen as overrated in 40 years and people are gonna say Jordan faced plumbers and lebron faced twitch streamers.

I worked with the magic and heat and every player always commented how dumb reporters are with their questions and stances. JJ was being respectful of past athletes but telling the truth regarding the advances of the sport and the players (other great players like J. West also couldn't dribble compared to today). JJ is sharp, funny, actually understands basketball, and can put you in the ground with a debate. These guys are idiots for challenging him in anything basketball! He is gold! GOLD!

Exactly. No disrespect. Cp3 is better than Cousy. JJ just doesn't want to make an unfair comparison. 1980s + it's fair, but otherwise respect their accomplishments and leave it @ that.

Kareem played in 69 to 89. Grew up when russell wilt were on top played against wilt jordan. Won a chip in 88 finals in 89. He was 40 y o in 89 dominating with a skyhook against modern centers. Nobody could stop him. Is ben wallace sjilled? Wallace never dribbled the ball at tge park but his gritt determination iq on d made him a hof player. Your telking me russell couldnt be one of tge greatest defensive forces today. Was rodman skilled? Oakley? These guys were tough but thry had zero handle coukdnt do anything but set picks on offense but they were smart. Kareem was smartest player ever. They asjed him why he always went to the hook. His answer cause nobody knew how to stop it.

Also Chris Paul was first team 4 times, including 3 times in a row, with harder competition and more competition. The best year of Paul's career was better than Cousy's best year. Tell me which is more impressive, beating 08 KG in MVP voting or beating 57 Pettit in MVP voting? I think we all know.

@@tashrif46 It's not disrespectful. His rebuttal was on the *skill* of the players, which deserves no respect because it wasn't very high. Russo is the one who tried to compare their ability.
