Oblayo looks like old fashioned hominy grits. Grits are still a breakfast staple in the southern part of the US but the grits that are preferred these days are factory processed and fine ground prior to purchase. The grinding eliminates the lumps in the cooked grits. I have my grits without milk but many people will add it.
@globalcetzen52713 жыл бұрын
I’m sure you know that our dear Afrikan American people, brought the hominy and grits food culture into America, together with the black eye peas, collards, okro, and many more motherland foods/crops.
@GeeBee2123 жыл бұрын
@@globalcetzen5271 Yes of course! In the South Carolina & Georgia Gullah/Geechee culture we also have a dish called red rice which is our version of jollof. Our "Hoppin' John" was derived from waakye. There are so many foods and traditions that we brought with us from Africa over 400 years ago that are still practiced here in the US. Despite the many obstacles, our connection to the ancestral homeland runs deeps. Peace and Grace!
@adjoa-anima3 жыл бұрын
We actually have that type of porridge in Ghana as well. We have a lot of grain porridges in west africa. This is different from grits. This is more broken corn porridge, we have another type which is whole corn dehusked porridge with the corn in the porridge bigger than oblayo. Then we have the milled corn porridge too plus others. You can actually get a buffet of porridge in Ghana there's a lot of variety
@GeeBee2123 жыл бұрын
@@adjoa-anima Thanks for that information. Here the hominy is the dehusked corn kernel. The resilience of African and African descended people never ceases to amaze me. Holding onto to our traditions and food throughout the diaspora even in the face of brutality.

Some folks eat it as a breakfast cereal - Especially in the north east of the US - Sugar, Honey, Butter, Milk - Thats why you find it in the Cereal aisle at the grocery story, right next to Oats, Cream of Farina, Cream of Wheat, etc - Being raised in the north east but having a southern grand father - I've experienced and enjoy it both ways - Savory with Butter, salt & pepper or sweet as described above - Both ways go great with toast - YUM - Food is so versatile
