As an old tool and die maker I particularly liked the left handed drill bit. I used to make them from drill blanks as needed. Very nice touch.Most people are not aware that you can buy a set of left handed bits. I have my truck in the shop with its 4th repair of this problem. I have heard that some after market headers will solve the repeated repair as they will not warp and snap the studs.

I used a mig welder to tack on a 5/16 nut. Worked very well even on the bolt that was broken ~1/4" below the surface of the cylinder head. I was afraid it might damage the aluminum threads, but it didn't. I just hit it a couple times with the welder just until the nut was tacked on and then carefully turned it out, turning back in a bit if it started to bind. I was amazed how easily they came out. I had been dreading that part and couldn't get my drill to line up to drill it out without buying a right angle drill.

Nice video saved me a ton of time and worked like magic. Extracted three bolts in about 10 minutes. Reading come of the comments below I agree the warped manifold should be replaced or re surfaced. However, the new manifold is going to do what it does and warp. Also do does not delete the Heat shield. This is to protect the valve cover and just above that the spark plug coils. Finally, if you did not use the torque sequence for future reference, start middle and work in a clockwise pattern inner bolts first then outer bolts.
@gordbaker8963 жыл бұрын
Great job. Always use a straight edge across the Manifold ports to check for warpage which puts added stress on the bolt heads. There is a specific tightening sequence for the bolts and the torque setting is 18 Foot pounds!

The torque bit was the best option that worked for me. I ordered the easy out kit off Amazon and extra 1/8 drill bit, both broke in less than a minute. These were left turning drill bits. I picked up a Dewalt 1/8 hard metal bit and that worked to drill into 2 of 3 of my broken bolts and used a 2nd Dewalt 1/8 bit for the 3rd bolt. Those were regukar right turning drill bits . In all 3, the torque bit worked with my socket wrench. Note* I sprayed the bolts twice a day for two days before I had time to finish this project. The bolts came out very easily once I hammered in the torque bit.

Nice video with a great use of the proper tools. I would advise against putting the old manifolds back on. If you take a straight edge to them, you'll see they are warped badly, which causes the bolts to break and the leaks to start in the first place. Unless you can flat mill the entire engine block side of the manifold, you're really only setting yourself up for having to do the job again. Dorman manifolds are $80. Good insurance.

I took mine to a machinist who flattened them out for cheap in his garage shop. Said they were very warped. Which IMO is better than buying new because the heat cycles that caused the warping in the first place has already taken place and shouldn't happen again after machining.

Manifolds studs are going to break again in a year or two. You need to machine the stock headers after they warp so they won’t do it again and use a good quality head stud like arp. @badassforever12 жыл бұрын
I keep seeing everyone posting in the comments about this, once you pull the manifolds off, send them out to be machined. The heat causes them to warp and that is what breaks the bolts. Once they have been heat cycled they will no longer warp. Get them machined and they will not leak again. I see people replace them with brand new manifolds and a year later they leak again. This is a cast iron manifold with an aluminum head. They expand and contract and different rates.

Excellent camera work! Yes, the 4.7 has the same problem. I'm really surprised that Chrysler wasn't in a class action law suit because this problem went on for several years. At the very least there should have been a recall due to the potential of exhaust gases getting into the cabin. If you have a broken stud before beginning the job there is a good chance that the manifold is warped. You can check it with a straight edge and if you're really good with a file you can true it up or you can take it to a machine shop or just buy a new one.

Jj . If you saying only the bolts in manifold ,why you changed the gasket then ?

Great video and just a few observations.,,,, dodge should produce some better quality bolts for the manifold because it will need to be redone , .... how long did it take total ?

Can this same work be done on a 2019 ram 1500 notice you’re description says applies to all dodge ram 2010 through 2018?

Do u have to replace the manifolds or can u just take the bolts off and replace with new bolts and put the old manifold back on
@JJBanuelos3 жыл бұрын
You can just replace old bolts & keep same manifolds just as long as they are not cracked or warp.

Nice job. The camera must have made it twice as hard to work on. I'd have just used vice grips where you tried the pliers on the exposed stud. But you gotter done.

i have some broken manifold studs. do you recommend just replacing them or installing shorty headers to hopefully prevent this issue from happening again.
@JJBanuelos4 жыл бұрын
Well I think they would still break unless you went with a stronger exhaust stud these seem to break regardless of the manifold.

@@JJBanuelos thanks for the reply. Do the dorman bolts hold up?

Those leaks spots when you had the exhaust manifolds off revealed crispy white valve stems.

Does the type of drill matter when doing this? If so, how powerful should it be?
@JJBanuelos4 жыл бұрын
That not thing that really matters is drill size. Power not so much because that lack of room is small so the smaller the drill the better
@patrickhill78514 жыл бұрын
@@JJBanuelos cool, I just can't seem to penetrate the stud with my drills. I have the left handed bits. I also used the punch to keep it centered. Any tips you know to get the bit started?
