Another good practice is to not post on social media the dates you will be absent from home and don’t post while you are cruising if you don’t have someone in the home. We never post cruise pictures until we’re back.

I was just going to say that. My next door neighbor posts on social media ALL THE TIME when they are away. We ALWAYS wait to post anything until we are back home. I don't even mention anything about a "future cruise" online. It's very easy for nefarious people to figure out where we live... it's public information and easily accessible on the internet.

I feel really sorry for the family. People can be really terrible. This is a good reminder that you have to be really careful about your information. It would be a good PR move for Carnival to offer them something but they technically don’t owe the family.

They do technically owe them the money they stole. The company cancelled their cruise and cannot use a security problem with their system as an excuse. They were notified in a timely manner that something was wrong and they did nothing.

This is a sad situation and I understand because I was a victim of identity theft years ago. While I feel bad for the family, I have to side with Carnival on this one.

Three things: 1) Carnival got PAID twice for that suite. They do not lose anything by compensating the family. 2) If some wrongdoer put the confirmation number into their own account to cancel the cruise, the wrongdoer is traceable. Carnival should be going after that person! 3) I do think it was foolish of the family to post their confirmation number where anyone could see it. That's also like advertising "My home is vacant while I'm gone on vacation, please come and rob me."

I'm always surprised at the people who constantly post photos on instagram and facebook when they are away on vacation, sending signals to nefarious people that they are not at home. This doesn't really surprise me anymore than all the fools out there that send out virus to shut down our computers. What kind of kick do they get out of ruining someone's vacation or computer access? It's a sick world.

If the reservation was canceled front someone else’s Carnival account, the reservation ID would not have been a match to that account. One would think that Carnival would flag that in their systems.

I am so sorry to hear what happened to these guests as this was a very expensive loss. It is also a hard lesson to learn when have your identity compromised by evil people who cause havoc in peoples lives. I do feel they need to take personal responsibility for the mistake they made by posting personal information of any kind. I can’t believe they are so narrow minded and passed a very generous offer from Carnival. Bottom line it was not Carnival’s fault. Carnival didn’t have to offer anything.

I hate what happened to the family, but Carnival wasn’t at fault. I would have taken the FCC and they didn’t have to offer that. The family posted the information on social media.

The family were the victims twice! By the person that cancelled their cruise and by Carnival. Probably friends of the family on Facebook made a hateful act. Ruining their vacation. Carnival did the research and found out what happened. Carnival shouldn’t have given conditions to the family in order for them to get their compensation for their grief. Carnival should have clarify the situation with the press of however they know how to do best. Don’t be patronizing people that were already irate and frustrated. Lawsuit is about to happen. PS. I have a cruise booked with Carnival next June 13 . I don’t post my plans on social media. People need to keep their private life private .

Carnival should be applauded for reaching out and offering the family an excellent settlement. The family was at fault for posting their confirmation number online. The mere fact they give themselves no blame in their fiasco makes me think this is deeper than it seems.

No they should be in Court on a Class Action Lawsuit for not protecting their clients to the standards required to do online sales.. the Systems Carnival uses should have some form of secondary authentication in place for any changes to online bookings.. even adding an excursion should have dual level authentication.. that would have easily prevented this situation.. it’s all on CARNIVAL for not having appropriate Security Configuration and lacking appropriate safeguards for online transactions. If you want to do online sales then onus is on you to protect your clients every single step of the way.. including but not limited to Dual Authentication for any changes to an Itinerary.. Carnival is at fault in my opinion. In my opinion this is Class Actionable.

The individuals who stole their confirm # likely did it to get a refund that belonged to this family

@@cynthiahiatt2715 Not likely, there are no refunds within X number of days from a cruise.. (2 days before is. definite no refund cancellation scenario) so no refund would have been forthcoming.. Part deus to this thought and to put it to rest.. let's say there would be a refund, it would have been applied to the SAME Credit Card that was Charged.. it would take weeks if not months to get a refund back to a different credit card or cheque be issued.. the cheque if one was issued would also go back to the original person's address and name of who booked the cruise.. The issue is Carnival's systems are lacking and they should not be doing online sales until they at least implement Dual Authentication for ANY and All Changes to a Cruise itinerary including and not limited to Cancellation.. This is 100% on Carnival for not protecting their clients and their systems should be subject of investigation.. WHERE IS TICO!!!

Something else that Carnival needs to fix is how easily they send out booking numbers. I’ve purchased gifts for family members that cruise and when I am sent the receipt, I’m sent their booking number as well. Sadly, getting someone’s booking number is as easy as buying them a $5 bottle of water for their cabin that you’d be refunded for anyways if this was a goal. It is good to know how it can happen even you don’t directly post your information.

Overall, it needs to be harder to cancel, than just a Confirmation #. You need a lot more than that to book, ie, names, birthday dates, credit card# , etc. This should be the case for all travel.

@@JJCruiseI believe (at least where i live) say you break a lease on an apartment. You maybe have two months to go at $1,000/month. The apartment complex says you owe the $2000 because you had a lease. Well if you move out early and they are able to rent the apartment, say for the second month, you are not liable for that second month rent because they were able to lease the unit. I would think something similar should happen here. If she paid $15,000 for the suite and they got someone else in there for maybe $10,000; they should refund her the $10,000 as that is the amount recouped by reselling the cabin.

This is horrible. I’m mixed. Having your cruise unintentionally cancelled is no bueno. While there was no fraud involved, we had a similar thing right before the 1st JJ cruise group cruise. It was a bizarre glitch on Royal Caribbean’s end. Somehow when we cancelled either an excursion or the key, it cancelled or whole cruise. Luckily RCL was like whoopsies, we got our same cabin and onboard credit.

It might not have even been a Canadian. Those robo calls we get show phone numbers from specific locations that aren't directly related to the sender who is piggybacking someone else's number. This could be the case.

I’m more on the side of Carnival. There was NO GOOD reason for the family to have shared ANY information about their upcoming cruise on social media!!! We all know the world is full of evil people just looking for ways to do harm. I’ve never shared any info. about going on vacation because of not wanting others to know when my house wouldn’t be occupied. I didn’t want to return home to find I’d been robbed! It seems as though this family posted about their cruise only to BRAG about having the means to be able to afford this expensive cruise. Some people aren’t able to afford a cruise and are very envious. I’m thinking this envy lead them to teach this family a very good lesson. The lesson being that others DO NOT want to read and hear about you being able to take a cruise they can’t afford!!! Bragging is not a nice thing to do. What I’d love to know is if the person who did this to the family a friend of their’s? Cruise lines do need to make it known to travelers that all travel info. should never be leaked and find ways to make it not so easy to CANCEL.

Jealousy is not the correct response. What if your 3k cruise was canceled. I agree that people should not put their personal information on the internet, but they had thousands of dollars stolen from them. That's not right anywhere. A little compassion. Lastly, just because these people paid for this type of cruise doesn't mean that they didn't use credit or get loans.

It's not like they just slapped it on a credit card or paid with money they found between the couch cushions. People assume that because they booked a $10K room, that they can afford to lose that money. They've been working hard to save up the money for a long time. This is so sad!

That's a good lesson! I never pay attention to confirmation numbers, so I never would have thought this could happen. Unfortunately, Carnival shouldn't be responsible for refunding the money. Offering a $10k credit was a nice move for them though. I hope the family reconsiders their offer.

Many years ago we had to cancel our cruise with Carnival due to a death in the family. We unfortunately did not take out the travel insurance, as we had cruised with Carnival a few times. We sent a letter to Carnival asking ever so kindly if there was anything they could do for us, and the did. Credit split between 2 cruises in a 2 year time frame. We were so very grateful, being kind and grateful helps, not accepting Carnivals credit only hurt yourself, and the mean words on social media, well, hope you feel better now.

Carnival is not responsible for what a customer does with their confirmation info. But, this makes it clear that a change needs to be made so any cancellation requires a second step to cancel a cruise.

What a crazy story! And what an awful thing to do to someone! I hope they will actually pursue police and legal action. And I don't like the strings attached with the future cruise credit. It sounds like everyone already knows about the offer and it loses some of its goodwill with those strings. But I also agree that it is silly to post any personal information to social media. I have posted casino offers online and been warned by friends not to include the offer codes, but even though I'm sure they're not transferable, even that might have been too much info to post online.

Hi, JJ! It was a terrible thing that happened to this family. They unfortunately learned a hard lesson about posting personal info on social media. Hopefully, the evil person who perpetrated this despicable deed will get fined and made to pay back all the money that this family lost on this trip. Also, Carnival should put in a more secure way of accepting cancellations or changes to one’s trip with a few security questions to confirm who the person is that is making the cancellation/change. When I first saw the lady's post I was confused but leaned toward her side and thought at the very least, customer service might have been able to soften the blow, but now that we know how it happened, it's so unfortunate that this happened to the family but I'd have to go with the company, especially after they offered almost whole cost of their cruise, minus transporation and hotel to the port.

Wow- good question- would be best if Carnival could track down that scam and ban them from cruising in the future and turn them over to authorities! They obviously sold that cabin to someone else- they should just allow them a future cruise in the same suite category. They make more money on excursions etc from patrons than the cabin itself in price.

Somebody at that ladies job canceled that vacation. Mom was at work went in to purchase the internet package for the cruise and forgot to log out and that’s how it got canceled

This is so upsetting on so many levels! Unfortunately, she has to accept accountability for her actions because Carnival is not at fault & I'm happy they offered future cruise credit that the family should have accepted. This innocent mistake led to a hard less learned. In this social media age we have to take heed & guard all types of personal/sensitive information.

This makes me think since travel companies consume your phone number already then they should automatically use 2 factor authentication when the confirmation number gets used. Get sent a text or phone call with the code so the confirmation# works. OR even set up a PIN like a bank card to authenticate using the confirmation#.

I think if carnival figured out who stole the confirmation number and canceled the cruise. They should charge the cruise to that person and ban them for life.

I have cancelled cruises with Princess (owned by the same corporation as Carnival). When cancelling one must call then give Booking Number, Name, Birthdate, Address and Traveling Companion. You cannot cancel online. It is possible that the documents shown had Booking Number and Name but probably not much else. But then with a little searching extra layers of info can be found. Also cancellations (with Princess) are handled offshore from the Philippines. Very odd situation.

I get the whole confirmation issue, can’t they find the person and sue them! Also would like to know how much the cruise was to begin with.

I recently had cause to cancel a Carnival cruise that I had booked online. However, I was unable to cancel online and had to call Carnival directly. I was asked for my full name, my booking number, and sailing dates, and that's all. I think that maybe the cruise line should ask you to provide a password or pin number when booking, which would verify your identity when modifying or cancelling your booking.

I am betting it was a jealous family member or friend. Carnival did try to help. I do think that they should have better safeguards (such as a login) to prevent this from happening in the future OR calling to confirm the cancellation or sending an email that you have to say "yes I do want to cancel this". I feel sorry for the family but they should NEVER post personal info on social media. Post it AFTER the event. I know they were probably just super excited but these days you cannot trust anyone. Whomever cancelled the cruise probably used a VPN to mask where they cancelled from as well.

I feel it was really terrible what happened to the family's cruise. I never knew that this could happen. I also understand Carnival's position. I think Carnival's offer was very generous as legally they were not responsible. I lost a lot of money on a trip because I did not cancel it on time. Sometimes we learn hard lessons.

I think Carnival went above and beyond in offering the package they did. I also think this a learning moment for all travelers and an opportunity for Cruise Lines to update policies and procedures for cancellation no matter when. Additionally, the added layer of Travel Agent is a bonus.

Curious about tracking down whoever it was that canceled the cruise and holding them liable. I don’t necessarily feel that would be on carnival, but if they know who it was and could release that information to the client if they wanted to pursue?

When you book a cruise with Carnival you select a pin number for the booking. You can share a count down but it only shows days, hours and minutes. Some part of this story is missing.

I wonder if their cruise was cancelled by someone known to them? Assuming their FB page isn’t public, people who have access to the families post would be a FB ‘friend’. Food for thought.

Moral of this story ,don't post anything on social media, especially when you show your confirmation number. Carnval is in the right but changes must be made across the board with airlines and cruise companies.

Carnival did give them a compensation however it sort of sounded like blackmail they way they stated that the family had to declare they were made right. I think it would have been nice of them to offer the FCC without strings attached to it.

That was a horrible thing for someone to do!!! They need to take the $10,000 credit Carnival offered them and take their cruise vacation. That was very gracious of the Carnival Corporation.

Theft of $10,000 is a crime. It was either a problem internal to Carnival or a hacker who had nothing to do with the family. They did not cancel their cruise and notified Carnival promptly that they did not. Carnival cannot use their own computer problem or the action of a hacker to steal money from customers or commit extortion to get them to lie about it being resolved. The theft of $10.000.000 would get most people sent to prison.

I can appreciate both sides. I was devastated when I had to cancel a cruise last minute, and can't imagine how much worse it would be if someone else did it without my knowledge. With that said, because of the public rant, I can see why Carnival wanted to investigate - to prove there was no wrong doing on their part. I think the woman needs to take a little responsibility for her mistake, and I believe Carnival'offer was very generous, especially since they weren't at fault.
