I found this video relatable, educational or entertaining. :) I''m 50, been surfing for 35 years. I used to live in Haleiwa and Sunset beach from age 21-31. Coaching and video analysis is a relatively new concept, at least for myself. I recently tried a surf coach clinic for the first time in the Mentawai Islands. I found it hard to change my ways while surfing. I felt like I was thinking too much about the new technique that I was working on and in doing so, my natural reaction time was delayed....I was not flowing and felt mechanical. It will take some time to change my technique. Coaching and wave analysis will definitely help, just need plenty of surf time to practice. I will say this, natural ability, being in shape and reaction time is a factor. I have surfed with a lot of pros in decent size waves. It is very humbling to see the difference in person. One of my most memorable surf with a pro was with Andy and Bruce Irons at Cannons. I was pushing my limits, shoulder hoping and they were getting barreled and smacking the lips (double overhead conditions). It is so cool to see a top tier surfer coming off a bottom turn to smack a lip while you casually paddle over the shoulder looking down on them. I'll check out some more of your average Joe surf videos because I'm still wanting to improve as I enter into my 50's!

Sweet, thanks man! Couldn't agree more, since I've started video analysis of myself things have felt clunky like I'm thinking too much. I think it's part of the process though, 1 step back 2 steps forward sort of thing.

Surfing is like a musical instrument, unless you're a prodigy you have to put as many hours a day, every day for many years to become in the master class. It would take you and millions of others 12 lifetimes to put in the hours JJF put in from when he was 5 yrs old till present. Not to mention where he lives gives him access to the instrument/stage he's performing on. If millions of people could actually put 40 hrs + + + in a week surfing, they may not be training on the waves like JJF has access too. Then there's the skateboarding part in the off time. Speaking of skateboarding, Pat you should film yourself skateboarding and look at your style and especially your stance. Your stance in this video is off; too wide and not natural. I'm not bashing you I'm just giving you some respectful feedback. Your style needs to improve and be more relaxed, too much to list. You're on your way to the top you just now have to clean you act up and put in 10k more hours. Peace

We know that and respect that. Speaking of respect there's a time and place to bring religion and politics up.
