RED 10 YEARS PROJECT

We bought our first RED camera ten years ago. It was a Scarlet and we were working on a surf edit called DONE. Looking back now it's pretty cool to think how that decision and then meeting everyone at RED over the years helped shape all of our film projects moving forward. We're fortunate to have the chance to visit these amazing places around the world, and meet so many incredible people -- it's always been a fun challenge to try and capture those experiences and bring them to life in the best way possible. These cameras were a big part of keeping us inspired to do that. For what we do, spending a lot of the year on the road, and the way Erik shoots in general, whether it's a long session on the beach, or shooting from the water, there just isn't a better option. Here's a look at some of our favorite clips and moments from the past decade.

this is incredible, I think I watched the reverse at 8:28 like 100 times now. I really love that you guys are shooting surfing on Reds - in most other surf edits the details in whitewater are super overexposed, but it's always perfect in parallel sea stuff since the dynamic range of these cameras is so high (and because the cinematographers are absolute pros). killer work!

To me black and white rules over color, it just is so much more intense in capturing clarity. The best still photos are always black and white! Great work John.

Also, focusing on B&W exclusively for a year or two really helps one understand composition using value (light/dark), which is really the foundation of composition. Color is secondary, but it is so seductive that it's pull can lead us to flabby design.

John is the quintessential artist -- so much joy in creation, so much curiosity -- whether it's his surfing or filming. This team has produced videos that are so powerful that nothing anyone else is doing compares. I often watch a few minutes of someone's video and then click off. With John's videos, i don't want them to end. I love John's competitive surfing, but no competitive surfing is ever going to have the breadth of possibilities as creating videos like you guys do. Can't wait to see what you have coming up for years to come. I love these videos because i can just totally lose myself in the experience of beauty during them, and nothing is more important to me. What you guys are doing is as important as any fine art, for me.

I upgraded to a 4k TV not too long ago specifically so I could enjoy surfing content to its best potential and the quality of your videos are absolutely incredible! I am always excited to see a new video drop. I work with an engineer who developed these smaller cameras at RED digital who was griping about them "just being used for surf videos" these days lol. I think you are truly making the best of what these cameras can do, and it is awesome how you appreciate the technology as well. Props to both you and your team!

Wow I remember seeing DONE when it was released. I was 16 and it rocked my world and inspired me in so many ways to travel, surf, take photos ( I guess I need to learn to sail now lol).
