And even if he doesn’t it wouldn’t change how I view his surfing. Winning a world title really does come down to a lot of luck. Maybe it’s not God’s will for some surfers to win. When everything is going well, we forget about God. God took my ability away long ago and I still watch and can feel these guys surfing just like it was me back then. I wouldn’t change anything now. I went to college and got a degree and if that hadn’t happened there is no doubt that I would have still been chasing pipe dreams. Probably wouldn’t be married right now and would have forgot about God.

Sounds like the WSL has a communication issue when 2 of the best surfers ever are confused by the judging criteria and how judges value critical surfing. Authentic conversation really does expose how vanilla Turpel, Strider et al are. I still love watching comps but I’d just love to hear genuine conversation and debate from commentators rather than that awkward ‘we’re all winners’ corporate spin. So grateful we have these additional platforms to be more in the tent with the athletes.

This was fucking wholesome! To listen to my absolute two favorite surfers expound on their life experience competing on the biggest stage was exactly the motivation I needed. Jordy is pretty existential and John isn't afraid to share his emotions with a fellow competitor. I hope you guys do great in the upcoming seasons after recovering from injuries and your feelings are certainly shared with others outside your profession.
