Wow! I had no idea this was actually a thing! I've had this for years (I'm 72). I would try to find where or what was causing it, but nothing would show up, no rash, no insect bites, nothing. I'm glad to know this isn't an abnormal thing. The only thing I treat it with is a back scratcher. It helps temporarily, until it goes away on it's own, which it does after a couple days. Watching this got it going, but my back scratcher's across the room, and I have a cat on my lap. 😬

I use a dry brush, it seems to be the only thing that actually touches the itch and relieves it. I’ve had it for years. I figured some sort of nerve damage. I have that sensation in a couple of other places too, but it started just under my left shoulder blade.,I’m right handed.

Actually, my dermatologist diagnosed this. She said that it often accompanies back pain/spine issues. Which I have had multiple lower back fusions and suffer from chronic pain. She recommended either the Capzasin gel or CeraVe itch relief lotion. I apply the cerave in the shower with a back brush and other times just on dry skin. This has helped me quite a bit.

Hi Y, the biggest improvement came for me when I started having a warm ( not hot) shower, followed by a cold shower for a few minutes (even in our icy cold winters!). My skin is calmer and I have fewer facial wrinkles. My hair is thicker, too. I pat my skin dry with a soft towel. Please avoid scratching with anything, including hard towels. It makes everything much worse. Simple non-perfumed lotions are best like Sorbolene or QV lotion. Wash your bed sheets regularly as skin mites can cause itching but don't use lots of detergent in your washing machine as you may be allergic to that. Try to avoid any hard back scratchers. Exercise helps everything but splash your face with cool water afterwards. Meditation helps all problems in a general low key way.

Same for me, had "the itch" for decades. I thought I was the only one. Am 70, right handed, mild to medium itch on my back right side (exactly in the location described) and relief provided by a backscratcher. Always thought it was either due to a mole/skin cancer (I live in the very SUNNY Outback of Australia) an insect bite or dry skin. Over the years have asked Doctors and skin specialists to have a look, all have looked, shrugged their shoulders and said "there is nothing there". I now suspect now that it is caused by my bad sitting and/or standing posture. I am working on my posture. Either way, thanking you JJ Medicine for enlightening me and countless others.

This is a very good explanation of this condition which I have suffered from for over 20 years. I have tried the various treatments mentioned but these really only treat the symptoms rather than treat the cause. I have personally found that chiropractic treatments and posture changes have been the most effective way to treat this condition. Most of us are guilty of sloppy posture and becoming more aware of this and adjustments from a chiropractor or physical therapist will help the most imo

Thank you for posting this. I found a couple articles online a while back on this. I’m 66 and have had it for several years. I have found the most help by stretching the muscles in that area. Just a thought here. Be careful with the back scratching. I developed an abscess in a lipoma I had had for 30 years. A scratching in the skin allowed bacteria in resulting in a bad infection. Bad enough the wound had to be packed for two weeks.

I completely agree. Doctors warn against scratching. It makes the itch worse. I think most itching is caused by hot water. I have a luke warm shower followed by a cold shower for several minutes. That really helps. Also I wear rubber gloves for washing dishes.

This discribes me perfectly. I’ve had it for a few years and it is exactly where you describe it usually is. It’s on my left side I’m right handed. It’s a small area and there is nothing there no rash no bumps nothing. It’s also in the area where I had an outbreak of shingles many years ago. I just use a back scratcher to temporarily relieve it. Thank you I finally know what it is.

I have had this for years. In 2000 I had an accident that damaged the thoracic area of my back. When I asked my dermatologist about it I described the itch as "intense", and told her it was different than my usual skin itches. She said it was most likely a nerve damage issue. She prescribed Ketoconazole cream and hydrocortisone cream. I use both and it stops the itch for about 24 hours, until I reapply. I stopped scratching it because that seems to explode the itching. What is hard to remedy is the fact that I am female and need to wear a bra. This is proving to be an item of torture. It moves just slightly on my back every time I move and causes more symptoms. Mine is only on the right side. It takes getting used to and after practice, you can ignore it to a degree.

I'm a woman who has this on the right side of my spine and more mid-back. I have some suggestions: Using lotion twice a day to keep it hydrated (prevent dry skin from exacerbating the problem). Icing it to stop the itch really works well. Trying to do exercises which strengthen the muscles between the shoulder blades helps. Also the vibration from the Next Roller is a tool when the itching is intense. It's also been better since I started using a "LifePro vibration plate", which I purchased for moving my lymph system. It's similar to the Next Roller, in effect, so vibration seems to help curb the itch. Oh! Try a bra which clasps in the front. It seems to work better. Mine is on the bra strap line too. Good luck!

Myself and another person in this comment section had it from food allergies. Try starting with brown rice, ghee, and bragg's soy, eat nothing else for a couple days, then start adding food, wait to see when the itching starts again. For me, it was onions, for you it might be something else. If I eat onions, within the hour, right under my left shoulder blade, total fire. It might be onions for you, too, or another food, but as changing diet worked for two of us in the comments, odds are, it will work for you.

Many thanks to JJ Medicine and to all who have shared their experiences in the comment section. I first saw a dermatologist about this when I was in my early 60s, and he couldn't find a skin-related answer to the problem. To his credit, he guessed that it could be a nerve misfiring. This was in the 1990s (I'm 92 now) and I had recently had a compression fracture in the neck area, so I assumed that was the cause. I have never found a topical lotion or an oral medication that helped, but I keep a back-scratcher in every room in the house.

My back has so many little dried blood spots appearing I look as if I have measles! I keep my nails as short as I can so as not to exacerbate the situation. It only occurs during the winter months. The itching is chronic and I have to use a bath brush, backscratcher etc. to relieve the itch, and also to cover my back with Hydrocortisone. Through the years it comes and goes. Less as I age, actually, but what worsened was the shoulder pain and spasms on that side. I don't know if they're related? But I have INTENSE to small spasms and a deep muscle pain, neither of which seem to accompany the itching necessarily, or even each other. Never seems to be a pattern or chronic "reason".

This was accompanied by extreme heat, a burning sensation and dampness in the same area. I’m stunned now to learn of this condition and don’t yet know if I do have a heart condition or if it’s directly related to the itchy back. The itch nearly drives me crazy. Hi Rita, I hope that you can get some helpful results from your tests. Perhaps you will need to see a specialist. Meanwhile, you may find it helps to have shorter showers that are warm but not hot. Long, hot showers feel comforting but can really dry out your skin. You may also like to use a very simple skin lotion that has no perfumes. Dry yourself with a soft towel and then apply the lotion. Of course you need to dry well between your toes and any other places where skin touches skin. I do hope things get better soon. By the way, I'm not a doctor so check these ideas with your doctor.

I like my stainless steel spaghetti strainer. Doesn't take much.

I have MS and I can spend hours scratching my back and the itch won't go away, It really does last for hours, even after Gabapetin and ampytriptline and antihistamine, the pain may be dulled, but never the itch.

I took amitriptyline as a migraine preventative and it caused me annoying pins and needles all over my back. I hate that medicine!!

@@Star-dj1kw It certainly does do that, but 8 weeks into the dose it does what it's supposed to do. I think ampytriptline makes everyone a little crazy during the first 8 weeks.

Oh wow, I'm soooo glad I found this video. My mother has been itching her back for years and I've been looking for remedies for her without knowing what was causing it. No doctors could help. I got her a topical steriod cream which has been helping but it's a symptomatic help. I'll now look for exercises as mentioned in the video. Thanks so much. I have subscribed to this channel right away.

I am a lefty and my itch is on the right side! It comes and goes, but it’s persistence was concerning me. Especially since I have family history of melanoma. So nice to have some idea of what it is.

Daayuuum!! This came up in my suggestions. I don't know why. This is exactly what has been happening to me for years. It happens in exactly the same place as pictured. I always keep a back scratcher close at hand. I never mentioned it to a doctor because I didn't know how to explain it since there were no bites, rashes, etc. I have had 4 spinal fusions done so maybe because of this. At least I now know I'm not crazy. Thank you for this information!!
