That’s my coach right there! Probably the most innovative coach in the League. Low key, a lot of teams copy his philosophies & defensive schemes. He brought a Chip to the city! He’s certified in Toronto forever

Yes ...the casual fans don't get his thing ...he has his style and don't care what people think look how many teams are using "janky defenses" now since he started using things like the box and 1 ...he got so much heat for that at the time but now loads of teams use it...he isn't going let the media and talking heads bully him into changing

Went to the Nick Nurse basketball camp in Iowa growing up. It was a great camp that really started my love for basketball. I will always remember the basketball that I bought at the camp, it was red white and blue and it said “The Pill” on it. So excited to listen to this pod!

Wow. The craziest part of this to me is around the 17:30 mark - just hearing the perspective of an NBA player trying to beat a defense and score vs a coach who has spent time learning all of that players tendencies and moves gameplanning to stop him. Great interview, Nurse seems like a cool guy and great coach

One of my favorite episode's of Gilbert Arenas's podcast was when he brought his high school coach on. I don't know if you had an influential coach from your youth JJ, but if you did, having a conversation with them would be interesting. Hearing how he coached you and how he coaches kids in general is always useful information. The high school skill level is definitely closer to what most casuals can relate to in our day to day lives lol

Awesome interview. For those that are interested Nick's got a book out called "Rapture" which takes you through much of what he talked about today. Foreword written by the one and only Phil Jackson. Great story about how Phil was a mentor to Nick.

Funny how they mention Casey's firing and how wild it is that he got coach of the year and was fired in that off season. You would think it was longer after, but it was just a couple months after receiving one of the highest awards as a coach.

Fun fact: Its no coincidence that that it was that year that Masai forced Casey to give Nurse complete control over the team offense. And the main reason he won was because of us being a top offensive threat that year.

If Nick Nurse has an audio book I need Ime Udoka to have it on repeat for the next 3 months. I really got envious of how the Raptors have drafted and developed players over the years. They really find gems in the rough and make everyone useful on offense. I give Ime a mulligan on account of his first year. But damn do I wish he could reach this team.
