I am currently translating Charlie's Munger's book and one of the greatest teachings he gives is "get the incentives right". Don't like a behavior? Get the incentives, right. He gives the example of FedEx employees who wouldn't do the job (transferring packages from one plane to another at night) but as soon as one told them "you're paid for the whole shift and you can go home as soon as the job is done", the whole problem disappeared. Don't like the All Star Game? Get the incentives right.

Getting the players to play harder and not wanting them to get hurt in an exhibition game is just not going to happen any more. These are stars and players that will be needed to help their teams in the playoffs. They are paid $20-60+ million to win a championship and everything they do is about winning that championship. And I'll say this again: I think that putting the All-Star incentive to affect the player's incentives and bonuses depending if they win or lose the ASG is a double-edged sword. Yeah, it might be competitive... at the start where contracts stay as it is right now. Money's on the line. However, these players are earning BIG money now, and contracts keep increasing. You'll have players gauging if "2M in incentives and bonuses" is worth risking injury and maybe other bonuses like 60-game and championship bonuses. ASG's not the only bonus on many a star's contract. Second, what will prevent players from severely cutting or even removing their ASG bonus and putting it all instead on a playoff bonus? If losing 1 ASG game will make me lose 2mil, for me I'd rather restructure my next contract to have 500K ASG bonus and asking for 2mil on the playoff achievement bonus instead. With that little money then, will players still be motivated? Nope, it's chump change.

However, what I'm arguing is that what the OP originally suggested (which was not the IST, but for the ASG) was a double-edged sword. The proposal of having the ASG incentives and bonuses only count for winning players has a good and bad to it, the good might even just be temporary based on how the current contracts are made, and the bad might even be detrimental in the long run. The solution, for me, is more of aligning the right priorities with the right reward. Voiding a player's ASG incentives and bonuses because his team lost the ASG game ain't it.
