The reason KD is so comfortable here is that he does not get dumb questions commonly being asked by mainstream analysts like Stephen A, Skip and those guys who never played pro ball. Damn this was a great conversation. I think fans of today truly don’t realize how much the game has changed. The notion that guys don’t play defense today is just not true. They are handicapped lol no hand checking.. flagrant fouls today were normal fouls 20 years ago so the physicality is reduced dramatically on top of the fact that the game is more spread out than ever and EVERYONE can shoot.
@loverofhumanity2 жыл бұрын
Yeah the last point is really the biggest difference. 20 yrs ago we hadnt figured out how to shoot yet. Literally every player used to have a different form. Trainers and athletes have all mastered the skill and technical aspects of shooting and kids are learning and developing that skill from 5 yrs old tbh. I see it even in mens leagues I play in. A lot of the younger guys arent as aggressive or drive in the paint as well as the old guys but they all can shoot extremely well. With the older crowd youll see a mixed bag of decent shooters to flat out awful shooters and practically no great shooters because they grew up in a different era where this wasnt really part of our game yet.

The great ones are able to remember seemingly every play in their career. KD is no exception. I remember Ted Williams recalling specific pitches in meaningless games throughout his career. It's a special mind-set.

KD height with Bron Size and athleticism
@samn908342 жыл бұрын
@@TK-kg6og that’s somewhat impossible tho, part of the reason Brons 3 point shot has never reached elite status is due to the muscle he has, with that much muscle it’s hard to have an elite jump shot with that much strength and muscle, you see it with Giannis too
@Henry-kv7zl2 жыл бұрын
@@samn90834 muscle does not affect shooting, countless examples of totally jacked guys who can shoot. A bigger factor is that an Uber athlete doesn't need to shoot to score thus they get less reps in game, and practice shooting less.
@samn908342 жыл бұрын
@@Henry-kv7zl being muscular doesn’t make you a bad shooter, no, but putting on as much muscle as Giannis did will make him much stronger, and his normal release will no longer be perfect. Giannis has also had multiple years shooting 4-5 attempts per game from 3, that’s much more than many players who are knockdown shooters, that attempts in the game thing is waffle

12:12 Blake would have been best in a Draymond short roll sense where he could playmake from the high post. The way AD used to play in NOLA when he would get ball screens in semi transition unlocked his game, how he got screens set for him as the ball handler on the elbow and the pinch post-just being a offensive hub instead of a beneficiary as a mindset would have optimized his game. We saw him operate as a primary playmaker AND scorer in the playoffs and had great results. We just never saw him as a great secondary playmaker.

Was that not he role he played? It's been 6-8 years but I remember that being *exactly* what he did. Tons of high ball screens with CP3 that turned into pick-and-pop or short rolls where Blake would come downhill and loved that lob to DJ. Lots of Blake at the top of the key. Lots of Blake pushing the ball in transition and turning that into drag screens as extended transition offense before flowing into their half court stuff. The problem with making Blake the offensive hub like Bam or Jokic today and unlocking him is that you had to take prime CP off ball to do it. Which you just weren't going to do. Chris was not just a superior playmaker and decision maker to Blake but *that* version of CP3 is maybe the best we've ever seen as a primary playmaker/decision maker. Those offenses were awesome mainly because of Chris. But Blake's mindset *was* to be the primary playmaker, especially after CP got hurt in 13-14. That CP wouldn't take a step back was part of the tension between them. Could Doc have staggered them more? Obviously. (The number of pages on that topic at the time makes War and Peace look like a footnote.) But that being said I think Doc's offense and the way CP played then -- he was more looking to create shots more than create openings -- didn't allow for DYNAMIC secondary playmaking like you see from Maxey or Dinwiddie or Brunson where they catch the ball at 24 feet and are already driving as the ball touches their hands and making reads as they barrel towards the rim. That kind of secondary playmaking has never been part of Blake's skillset anyway. He's more comfortable/effective as a primary playmaker in the short roll, iso and PnR where he can digest what's in front of him and then beat the rotations ... But hanging above all that is DJ. It's hard to catch-and-go for anyone when Gasol or Ibaka or Dwight or Duncan is standing in front of the rim and staring at you. That beautiful game stuff only works when you occupy or drag out the opposing center. The spacing was always cramped for LA even with JJ because Blake didn't shoot threes yet, DJ couldn't shoot and teams weren't afraid to help off Barnes or even Chris. Now that I think about, I'd not only argue that Blake was an excellent secondary playmaker as a release valve in the way you described -- short roll and semi transition -- but his playmaking was the very thing that took that offense from very good (top 5) to the #1 offense in the NBA.
