Simplest way to put it is its a feature in a vehicle that allows the driver to set and maintain a specific speed without having to keep pressing the accelerator pedal. Once the driver sets the desired speed, the car will automatically maintain that speed until the driver presses the brake or turns off the cruise control. This potentially makes driving on long trips more comfortable and less tiresome.
