One thing we do for striping on a textured surface. we do a clear tack coat of the urethane, super thin. Just so it seals underneath lip of tape. Then once it tacks up we apply our color coat over that. Keeps lines nice and crisp. Great work and great content.

We do the same thing. That way the clear is what bleeds under the tape and also creates a seal. When you pull the tape you cant even notice. I think it's much cleaner than trying to wipe away anything that bleeds under. The only downside would be if you weren't using something that cures fast enough but polyaspartics seem to do really well.

Just did my fist epoxy job on my own and i had a few mistakes. First i didn't prime and paint dried blotchy. Flakes hid the mess under. Some parts absorbed faster than others and dried. When i cast the flakes they didnt stick much. Tried touching up. Huge mistake. Resanding everything and reapplying base coat and flakes. From man to man, thank you. You definitely help me understand epoxy systems better.

This is probably my 5-6 video of yours over the last 3 days. I have been back and forth on what I want to do with my 840 sqft garage floor since we bought our house 3 years ago. I was encouraged to go ahead and do it myself vs spending $6000-$8000+ letting a contractor come in. I just plan to contract out the floor prep/grinding. It is super important that the floor stays level for my boards and I am just a bit concerned I may mess that up. I have since started playing competitive cornhole so I wanted to put some permanent lines down on the floor. Well, this did it for me. You have answered all my questions that had me hesitant to take this on and now answered my line issue. Great stuff! One quick question regarding the line in this video. Is there a reason you did not put the lines down first before doing the top coat?

If you try to put the white lines down before the clearcoat, the texture will be so rough it will bleed under the tape really bad.

If you leave the joint open, you will have a continuous dirt and water catch. If you fill the joint and coat over it, there is a possibility of movement within the concrete that may create a crack through the coating. In most cases, the risk of a crack in the coating is more popular than leaving the joint open.

I'm glad I stumbled on your video - love the attention to detail! Question, suppose your colored striping was subjected to wheel traffic. Would it help to run another coat of clear epoxy over the finished striping? Wondering how the urethane would hold up to tire traffic over time otherwise.

The Urethane is actually better scratch and abrasion resistant, then the epoxy. Excellent with traffic, you would not need to topcoat it.

Great Job! Question: Before clear coating; why not put down a solid white line (less taping), then the blue line and THEN the clear coat?

This polyurethane is thin, if you try to go blue over white, it will take multiple coats of blue so you don't see the white underneath it. The line striping is it polyurethane so it does not require a clearcoat. If you did the line striping prior to the clearcoat, you would exceed the 24 hour window to apply the topcoat over the flakes.

Aluminum oxide is a non-skid texture additive that you can apply to the topcoat. It essentially looks like clear sand particles when you apply it into a clearcoat. It just adds more grip to the floor.

When striping lines over a freshly installed floor, like shown here - is there a time frame you need to work within in regards to ensuring bond with the floors top coat and the urethane stripes?

Since we are applying urethane on top of epoxy, we lightly sanded the surface to create a scratch for the urethane to bond to. Therefore there is no window to worry about. We also solvent wiped with acetone after we sanded.

Just letting you know first that I don’t know anything about flooring. My question is if you fill the expansion joints is that not counterproductive? It must be ok or something otherwise you wouldn’t do it. Please educate me lol

Filling joints is optional and completely up to the customer. If you fill joints, you need to use a semi-rigid material so the concrete can expand and contract or else it will crack somewhere else. The negative is, if you do, fill the joints and coat over them, if the joint moves, it will crack through the coating. So you need to make a choice, either leave an open joint that dirt will lay in, or risk a crack in the coating if you do fill the joint

You mentioned the client changed their mind about line location after you finished the white lines, curious, how did you handle that? Told him too late, or is there a way to actually remove the white lines without ruining the top coat?

They changed their mind before we put the line striping down. I don’t know exactly what you heard in the video or what part. This was a while ago. They actually wanted the stripe up the middle to mimic in airport runway. As long as they told me before we put the line stripes down, it didn’t affect the job at all.

Question: At the entrance to my garage at the garage door the concrete is breaking apart about 3/8 to 1/2 depth along the whole width of the double garage. If i chipped/ cleaned all the loose concrete would i be able to fill to max depth of 1/2 or any ideas of what else i could do? Thank you

The material can bleed under the tape very easily. I found that duct tape works pretty well, make sure the tape is pushed down very well along the wet edge.

Love your floor ! Quick question. I am thinking about hiring a contractor in my area to do our floor with them using a Polyaspartic Top coat over the flake. They do not do striping, so it looks like I will have to do it. I looked at your Line Striping paint you offer, will this work with what they use as a top coat ??? Also - Do you pull the tape off while the Urathane is still wet - on both colors ?

I have no idea what material they are using, as long as you lightly sand it, you shouldn’t have a problem. Yes you pull the tape off while it is wet, once the urethane dries the tape is glued to the floor. You need to be very attentive to the tape edge when you apply it. It needs to be tight to the floor or else you will get a sawtooth edge.

What if you have a large hole, like literally the size of a 2 by 4. (Yes they put a 2" by 4" by like 4 ft in this section) It is a transition from one concrete pad to another, and I would have to fill it to make it look good. How should I go about that? Would I fill the whole thing with the fine sand first, then the CFS 343, or would it be better to fill it with concrete (or concrete leveler)

Believe it or not, you are not the first person that has this issue. I would not recommend a cement-based product as it will not bond very well to the existing concrete. I would recommend using an epoxy mortar : concretefloorsolutions.com/store/repair-materials/epoxy-mortar-kit/ Try to pull the 2 x 4 out, clean the interior of the area and install this material. Keep in mind if your concrete moves it may crack, there is nothing you can do to stop concrete movement if it’s going to happen. After this material is cured, grind over the whole surface to prepare it for an epoxy flooring system. I have tried frog tape. I think that only works well with water-based materials. I did get quite a bit of bleeding under frog tape previously but every job acts a little bit different. I have also had good luck with low grade duct tape.

At the 9:17 mark there is a blue and white machine that looks like your vacuum is attached to but is way more than a vacuum. What is it?

That is a blastrac 654 vacuum system, 480 V. It is a +/- 850 CFM vacuum. We use that on industrial jobs also with two grinders running. Zero dust from grinders.

Polyurethane has better scratch resistance than epoxy. It can scratch or chip as anything could. Putting clear epoxy over urethane would be counterproductive. The urethane is a much better topcoat

If you put a small bead of clear caulking along the edge of the tape and smooth it out, the wet material won't bleed under the tape leaving really straight lines with no bleed through under the tape.

Because the epoxy primer is low viscosity and penetrates into the concrete unlike polyaspartic. Installing an epoxy primer is the best practice, if you skip the primer, you are risking failure. I get phone calls every day from polyaspartic one day systems peeling. Polyaspartics are great intermediate, and or Topcoats, just should not be used as a primer Polyaspartics are soft, flexible materials, which allow air to migrate up through the pores of the concrete and slowly push the coating off unlike penetrating epoxy primers. Also, One day floors are typically 15 mils total thickness, unlike this system which is 30 mil thickness. You get what you pay for..

@ConcreteFloorSolutions are you in a southern climate? My company uses polyurea as a basecoat I have seen companies using polyaspartic with little success. Epoxy we will use in basements or temp controlled areas but always with a polyaspartic topcoat.

I get phone calls literally every day for (one day) polyaspartic flooring systems bubbling. Yes our system takes two or three days to install, but quality is about taking your time and doing it right.

Yes, I do need to caution you, if it is extremely humid out the frog tape will actually buckle before you apply material. Painters tape will work well also, you just need to push it down really hard so there's no gaps underneath.
