Great job with prep, installation and explaining the whole process. Just so you know, you have ‘control’ joints and not ‘expansion’ joints. Expansion joints are normally caulked to hide the felt material used in between the independent slabs of concrete. control joints are simply shallow grooves used to control cracking (concrete is still one slab). Applying epoxy in the control joints has no impact on the performance of the concrete. Nice vid!

Also - a good squeegee hack. Buy some rubber/vinyl cove base. When your squeegee blade eventually fails, just drill and bolt on another blade using wingnuts and the cove base. I've been running the same handle over 30+ jobs with replacement blades for about $4.00 per foot rather than $30 a squeegee.

You're most welcome brother It dosen't have to be the same brand as long as it's 100 percent solid epoxy you are good to go. After the prep work make sure to apply the epoxy in the coolest time of the day like in the morning. If it's ur first time mix only half of the containers and finish one side and the mix the other half and do the other side of the garage. I got this from a place called Target building supplies in Windsor Ontario you can call the manufacturer and they can tell you where to buy it from as it is a Canadian made product. All the best.

Thank you for your input. My garage has 2ft of exposed concrete walls under the drywall, I already grinded down to nice and smooth surface. Should I start with the side walls first, flake it and mix more material to do the floor? How much time do I have to work with these epoxy?
@renovationschool8818
@renovationschool8818 2 жыл бұрын
@@bognarphotography1 yes I that's a very good idea Do the walls first and then the floors Make sure there is no flakes on the ground when u apply your epoxy. Blow it with a leaf blower or sweep it up. If u get ur self a notched squeegee it will make it a lot easier on you. Try to avoid rolling as much as u can. This stuff will cure very very fast as it is 100% epoxy is say max work time is 20 min or so. So make sure to mix smaller batches If u use brush and roller for the sides make sure to get something that dosen't dissolve. Only use roller and brushed that are good for oil based paint and get a few of them in case they get dried up or hardened up while u work with them.

Pro-tip: 100% solids means that the set-up of the mix is exothermic. If you leave the bulk in the bucket? The exothermic process is enhanced & sped-up. Dipping from the bucket is not best-practices. You need to pour the entyre mix out in ribbons on the entyre floor & then start to work it into & over the floor. That’s what the spiked slip-ons are for.

I have a 2-car garage roughly 20x20', 400 square feet. Would I need a 3 or 4 gallon kit? Since its my first time and you recommend only mixing half and installing half of the garage... are there any issues that you have worry about when feathering the first half to the second half? @renovationschool8818
@renovationschool8818 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching 🙂 if the plastic is sweaty the next day, then epoxy won't work on your floor, u need to apply the epoxy to a bone dry surface. if there is moisture in the concrete the epoxy will not bond or adhere to the concrete. That's the reason why I said if the concrete floor was just poured in the garage ( if the house is brand new) you have to wait at least 40 days before applying the epoxy.

No you either have to grind it down just like what I did in the video or use primer. Just make sure if you are using primer, that primer works with the finish or the epoxy that you're going to apply. I highly recommend grinding the surface and in my opinion that's the best route. Once the surface is itched the epoxy will bond very very well to the surface. And specially in new areas where the concrete is poured the surface of the concrete is very smooth which make it very difficult for the finish to stick to the surface.

I'm sorry I didn't understand what you mean exactly. If you already have epoxy on your garage floor and you want to redo it and make it look something like this, you should grind and remove the existing old epoxy first thing first. And then you can apply this new epoxy onto your garage floor. If it's a bigger garage floor and you need multiple kits to cover the entire area you can mix one at a time and apply them on the same day . The clear coat needs to be applied the next day right after cleaning the chips. Just keep in mind that your clear coat is the most important part of this project if you want this to be washable and if you want this to last for a long time it's best to invest in a very high quality top coat that goes exactly what the product that you applied on the bottom and also you want this to be non yellowing so it doesn't yellow after sometime.

@@renovationschool8818 im doing it on a newer floor. No paint or coating. I plan to use the company you feature in this video and am wondering if the 3 gallon kit plus clear coat will be thick enough for my 620 sq ft garage. If one kit isn't enough, ill have to buy a second kit and am wondering if I do two kits can I lay all the material down, from both kits, at the same time or, do one thin layer (1 kit) and have to do the second kit at a later time?
@renovationschool8818
@renovationschool8818 Жыл бұрын
@garageganggyms you will need 2 epoxy kits and maybe you get away with one clear coat kit (maybe) Mix the first epoxy kit and apply it. that will get most of your garage covered when it's done in a new bucket mix the second kit and apply it to the rest of the garage right away . The open time for the second coat is 3 to 6 hrs. In case if you want to apply a second coat of epoxy it has to be applied at least 3 hrs after the first coat was applied and max 6 hrs after the first coat was applied. Keep in mind it's summer and it will dry up 3 times faster. If that 6 hrs window is passed you have to sand the first coat so it's scratched and then apply your second coat because it will harden up so much and it will be shinny and supper smooth. if u apply your first coat and throw the chips on it , you really don't need a second coat. One coat will do great.in my opinion 2 coats is too much .It's been 2 years since I've done this garage and despite all the abuse it still looks like the day 1 . So I think one coat is already very good enough.

@@renovationschool8818 thanks alot, my garage is without any coatings, the only reason I’m leaning towards primer is to get the best out of all these efforts. Based on your experience, do you see advantage of using primer after concrete grinding prior to applying epoxy?
@renovationschool8818
@renovationschool8818 Жыл бұрын
@@ninjip3460 i think it's not a bad idea As long as it works with the actual epoxy I wouldn't use a primer that is built by a different company. I had an area on my driveway that a little drop of epoxy was spelled on it . I couldn't remove it with any chemical. The only way is to grind it or chip it out , it adhear that much. It almost eats through the concrete. Before u do it watch the video again If u can grind the corners it's even best. Get a notched trowel and it will make it life a million times easier Aslo u can fill the cracks with sikaflex caulking before u apply the epoxy. In my video you see that they leave the seams alone and I fill it at the very end that's because it was in the middle of the pandamic and I didn't have access to sikaflex caulking. If u get that u can apply some backer rod in the seams and fill the seams first then do the epoxy on top. It will look seam less.

I recommend contacting your local epoxy stores and see what they have available. You maybe able to find better products and better prices. Plus your local epoxy suppliers will tell you what product is mostly used in your area. I personally am not a big fan of rusoleum products. Most their paint is cheap quality. @@Lite3102 100 percent grind it, grinding is to bond the epoxy to the concrete. when they pour new concrete, the water from the concrete comes to the surface so the very top part of dried concrete is very weak and mostly shiny and slippery. by grinding we get rid of that fine layer and we scratch it so when we apply the epoxy it adheres better.

If the clear coat was not used that will happen, I used 100 percent solid epoxy and after 2 years it's just as good as the first day that I got it done. Keep in mind I park in this garage every single day and I abuse it a lot with my tools, you will see this garage in many of my new videos also, cheap tires will also leave black marks on floors. when you drive around the tires get hot and when u park the car in the garage you will get ugly black marks on concrete or whatever flooring system you have. If the right product was used it will be cleanable. I don't know your definition of a pro company. pro companies must use good quality products and they must be responsible for their job quality and they always give you warranty. I always give 2 year warranty on my epoxy floors, I have done over 50 in the past 2 years and I've never heard anything back from any of them. Thanks for watching and all the best 😊
